King of poison: Arsenic
"Would you like some salt on your potatoes?"
"Tea?"
"That's a nice green color on the walls, don't you think dear?"
"Try this new miracle cosmetic called Aqua Toffona"
Such words were probably told to the victims before they hit the grounds.
Where do they get that poison?
Easy, Arsenic is a metal, right. So like gold they dug it up. It's smart you thought that. It's a way to get it.
But also a way of getting poisoned without even knowing it without any perpetrators as environmental contamination since arsenic is a natural component of the earth’s crust leading it to be widely distributed in the air, water, and land. In some places, natural soil arsenic levels are high and this can lead to elevated groundwater arsenic levels.
As correct the previous answer was, it was more common to ring up your local chemist and ask for Arsenic or the insecticide, rodenticide, and fungicides available ( however, its use there has been limited greatly in many countries.)
Since, historically, this pesticides were extensively used for the control of external parasites on sheep and the soils surrounding old sheep dipping facilities are often heavily contaminated with arsenic. Returning to the cycle above and you can be facing chronic effects of arsenic without even knowing it was the cause.
Sadly, that's not all. Arsenic is also found in tobacco smoking. As well as fish, shellfish, meat, poultry, dairy products, and cereals can also be dietary sources of arsenic, although exposure from these foods is generally low. In seafood, arsenic is mainly found in its less toxic organic form.
Arsenic was embedded in the industrial production of tools, glass, pigments (therefore, beware my fellow artists, restorers, and historians of the Scheel's green or Paris green), ornaments, the use of arsenic as backing for mirrors, the use of coal-fired furnaces, and in tanneries.
Funny, knowing how deep arsenic was used for things like that it can't be used for humans. The medical field didn't think like that. In fact they wanted to use arsenic in any way possible.
1. Cosmetics(historically arsenic trioxide mixed with vinegar and chalk was consumed as a skin whitener and some poisoners like La Toffona sold her Aqua Toffona as cosmetic knowing it was truly poison given to the amount and nature of her product)
2 . Treatment for syphilis.
Can you imagine what would have happened if pencillin was never discovered!!!
