Dropping the latest Sketch-a-Wish, voted on by my lovely Patreon members for April! A scene from The Wicked King by Holly Black, Cardan and Jude pledging their troth.

This scene was nondescript on the type of flowers that were blooming in the king's chambers as they were professing their vows to each other. But given how they were both adamant that their marriage would be utilitarian and short lived, I feel like the room blooming over head was a sign that it was more permanent than they realized, hence the wisteria and its meaning. 🤭

• cardan looking out his window in hollow hall, watching jude & taryn playing outside

• and immediately being jealous and angry, and feeling stupid for it

• he rips the curtains closed to shut them out, but he can still hear the faint sounds of their laughter in the garden

• so he drops to the floor, covers his ears and screws his eyes shut.

• he hates them so much. those stupid mortal girls. they don’t belong in elfhame.

• but he especially hates jude

• because she’s so different from them all. she pretends to be a knight, not a princess. she is wild and free in ways he will never be. and she is soft in all the places she should be sharp

• like her ears, how they are rounded at the tips — and it’s disgusting, but he can’t stop thinking about them

• and sometimes he’ll run into her and taryn in the woods on the way to class & jude will silently glare at him and wait for him to walk ahead of them. they never speak.

• he hates the idea of her eyes trained on his back as they walk. of her judging him. a worthless mortal girl judging him. it’s ridiculous and beneath him but the thought makes him shiver.

• but it’s oddly disappointing on the days he doesn’t run into the twins, because then he doesn’t have an excuse to think of them. to think of her.

• of jude. jude, his neighbor who never should have been. jude, who infiltrated his kingdom, his home, his mind. jude jude jude jude—
