Eyesight myth

Blind rabbits:  I know there is a myth that ruby eyed whites (REWs) are blind, so I want to show the difference between a blind kit and a normal kit.  REWs have poorer eye sight than a kit with normal colored eyes.  They seem to see motion better and don't always notice things that aren't moving.  Not all REWs have this problem, just some cant see as well.  REWs will "scan"; slowly turn their heads from side to side to see everything.  This is completely normal for a REW. Below is a photo of an eye with cataracts.  See the small white dot covering the eye? This kit (Wooly's Endo) is completely blind.  This dot will probably spread as he gets older, and will eventually cover the entire eye.

Any rabbit with cataracts will be DQed from a show, however they can still live productive lives as a brood animal or a pet.  They don't do well with change, and don't like to have loose stuff in their cage.  They can get cataracts from an eye infection or injury, and can be born with it.  Sometimes elderly rabbits can develop it.
