Windows 10 October 2018 Update Bugs Fixed - Says Microsoft

Microsoft on Wednesday said it has identified and fixed all known issues in the Windows 10 October 2018 update and has begun re-releasing the key update.

After some users complained that installing the Microsoft Windows 10 Support October update has been wiping off their data, Microsoft last week put a halt to the availability of the update (version 1809).

“We have fully investigated all reports of data loss, identified and fixed all known issues in the update, and conducted internal validation,” said John Cable, Director of Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery. Microsoft investigated isolated reports of users missing files after updating. “At just two days into the roll-out when we paused, the number of customers taking the October 2018 Update was limited. While the reports of actual data loss are few (one one-hundredth of one per cent of version 1809 installs), any data loss is serious,” Cable said in a statement. He added that Microsoft Support and our retail stores customer service personnel are available at no charge to help customers. “We will carefully study the results, feedback, and diagnostic data from our Insiders before taking additional steps towards re-releasing more broadly,” said Cable. For those impacted by the file deletion bug, Microsoft Support is trying to recover data for users who may have experienced related data loss. “While we cannot guarantee the outcome of any file recovery work, if you have manually checked for updates and believe you have an issue with missing files, please minimise your use of the affected device and contact us directly,” Cable said, tendering an apology “for any impact these issues may have had on any of our customers”. Users who installed the “Windows 10 October 2018” update complained last week that the process wiped out their user profiles, including documents and photos. An alarming number of users took to social media forums and Microsoft’s own support website to complain about the serious issue.

Toyota Material Handling Europe is using Azure, AI and HoloLens to help drive its vision for the factory of the future. By distributing intelligent logic across the factory and its robotic systems, the company can train “pallet drones” to recognize patterns, automate processes and learn the flow of a manufacturing factory floor. Bühler AG, a leader in food processing manufacturing, has developed a revolutionary optical sorting system called LumoVision to significantly improve food safety practices. Using the power of the Microsoft cloud, this new system creates a faster and more precise grain-sorting solution, eliminating 85 to 90 percent of contaminated and toxic grain, compared to 50 percent for conventional sorting machines. Financial services is another space where companies are moving quickly to seize the digital dividend using data. Today, more than 80 percent of the world’s largest banks are Azure customers. Saxo Bank, a fintech leader, provides “banking as a service” and access to 35,000 financial instruments to banking and brokerage clients in 170 countries. To grow the power and scale of its services, Saxo Bank is moving nearly all its technology stack to Azure. We are also working with Eagle Investment Systems LLC, a BNY Mellon company and financial services tech leader with $21 trillion in managed assets. In partnership with Microsoft Support, the firm has created a new cloud-based data management platform on Azure to help investment managers capture data, ensure its validity, manage assets and “seek alpha.” UPS, the world’s largest package delivery company, is enhancing its customer service with AI, using Azure Bot Service and Cognitive Services for the UPS Bot, which converses in text and voice with customers about their shipments. UPS developers are also using .NET and Visual Studio to extend its mobile app to more platforms faster, with less code. With native technology integrations across Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Adobe Experience Cloud, 24 Hour Fitness is investing in a combined cloud platform to engage its members and guests with highly personalized experiences, including health and fitness guidance they truly want and need. Marc Jacobs International, the global fashion house with more than 200 retail stores across 80 countries, is another great retail example. The company uses Dynamics and a partner solution, MediusFlow, on Azure to streamline and automate a key part of its supply chain: Paying the enormous, continuously changing network of special vendors and suppliers it counts on to create and deliver its new collections each season. Microsoft Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection to Windows 7, 8

Microsoft Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection, a service that Windows 10 users can utilise to prevent advanced attacks on a network, will now be available for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users as well. The Windows antivirus tool has essentially been back-ported from Windows 10 to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

The unified endpoint security platform is currently available only for Windows 10 operating system. However, since a lot of users are still on the previous versions of the OS, Microsoft Support has announced that it is adding Windows Defender ATP down-level support for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 8.1. Separately, Microsoft is testing a way users can preview new versions of native apps without being on Windows Insider Preview builds. Users moving to Windows 10 will be able to add Windows Defender ATP Detection and Response functionality to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 8.1 from this summer. Microsoft says that it wants to help its customers “achieve the best security possible on their way to Windows 10 ahead of the end of support for Windows 7 in January 2020.” As per an earlier report, Windows 10 is said to finally be the most popular version of Windows out there, edging out 8-year-old Windows 7. This rollout will enable users holding on to older versions of the Windows OS to get some of the exploit and malware-infection prevention and event reporting features that the company offers on Windows 10. It will also help enterprises where older computers can be brought under a uniform security management and administration tools, that are used for Windows 10 PCs. As mentioned, users must be moving to Windows 10 to add Windows Defender ATP Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) functionality to their devices. Also, Microsoft has said that it is building a behavioural based EDR solution to “give security teams rich insights into threats on their endpoints.” It added that all detections and events are surfaced in Windows Defender Security Center, which is the cloud-based console for Windows Defender ATP. With this, security teams can benefit from correlated alerts for known and unknown adversaries, additional threat intelligence, and a detailed machine timeline for further investigations and manual response options. In other news, users interested in all the new features on Windows apps will no longer have to run an Insider build. Microsoft Help and Support is reportedly developing a process where users will be able to test apps inside retail versions of the Windows. As per a Thurrott report, users will be able to preview Windows Camera, Microsoft Photos, Alarm, and some other apps. According to the report, several inbox Windows 10 apps now have the option to preview new features, even if the user isn’t part of the Insider Program. In an invite to the Windows Camera preview program, the company reportedly said, “You’ll be one of the first to try out new features in the preview version of Camera, and your feedback will shape the future of the app.” While Microsoft has not provided details on how this programme will function, Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc, in a tweet, wrote: “This is us just trying to make it easier for those who want to test app updates on both Insider builds or retail.” Toll Free: 1-800-751-298 Lower Ground Level, 65-67 Burelli Street, Wollongong, NSW 2500, Australia.
