Ok, so, this past week has been a big week for me. I got into a car accident that left me upside down in a ditch, I went out of state for a con the next day, I caught Covid at the con, and I got back home in time to watch the new season of Cobra Kai.

And maybe it is a show best watched through a feverish haze while recently concussed, exhausted, and high on flu meds, but I haven’t been able to deal with the CK fandom outside of my little Discord server bubble. I swear, some of y’all just hate fun.

I expected it from the Robby stans, but DANIEL WAS LEFT ABANDONED IN THE STREET AFTER HIS HAREM OF REFORMED KARATE RIVALS TOOK A PARTY BUS PILOTED BY A COKED OUT MIKE BARNES TO GO HAVE A SWORD FIGHT IN AN EVIL BILLIONAIRE’S REFLECTING POOL. And I think that’s beautiful.

This is really the show you’re gonna over-analyze and critique in disgust? The silly karate soap opera? Am I really reading about how the inclusion of new villains/touching on Cobra Kai’s roots is racist and how Carmen having a Top Gun fantasy is lazy and sexist? Am I supposed to sit here and pretend I don’t see these same people posting blatantly racist meme templates and longing for Daniel to move to Okinawa where he can finally be cherished and understood? Pretend like I haven’t been futilely trying to filter Top Gun and Tom Cruise posts off my dash for months?

Is Daniel LaRusso being driven to fight Terry to defend himself and the kids (Like Miyagi once did.) really a betrayal of the equally-silly, marginally-more problematic source material Tumblr romanticizes?

CK is never going to be as comprehensive and progressive as fanon... or as slash-fic tropey. (Fanon uke Daniel, I hate you. Canon Daniel, I’m sorry so few people appreciate you as you are, king.) It’s a show with a short runtime and a large ensemble cast. I expect things to be called out with any show, but you’d think this was prestige television the way I see folks dissect canon. Imma have to step away from Tumblr for a while. I don’t think my heart can take seeing one more vitriolic post about Carmen rn.
