Let’s be clear here. I don’t know anyone who holds the Israeli artists personally responsible for what is going on in their country.
BUT
In 2022 the night Ukraine won, I remember people having a go at me for saying that they will not be able to host the competition in 2023 as you knowingly couldn’t ask artists, delegations and fans to go to a country at war.
I was right.
Yes the result in Liverpool was fantastic. A brilliant blend of the two countries and honestly there does feel a bond between the two nations even now.
The other side of that coin was Russia as aggressor was banned from the country as their actions didn’t not align with the principles and objectives of the competition.
Fast forward to 2024/2025/2026. Israel is a country at war. Again you couldn’t be expected to ask artists/delegations/fans to travel to a country currently involved in a war.
Add to this half of Europe think Israel is the aggressor and if they banned Russia, by the same argument Israel should be removed.
The reported behaviour and commentary from Israel last year is just the final straw for some people.
The EBU really needs to think about its next move. Because honestly the BBC news tonight carries two stories, how nearly 400 people have been killed in Gaza in the last few days from Israeli bombing and how Austria narrowly beat Israel to win the Eurovision Song Contest. The same news headlines. Let that sink in.
Common sense has left the room.
