Hanni never believed in spontaneous romances—until she met you. Hanni realizes that this time, and for the first time, she doesn't want to run away.
12. I don’t want to give a ending

The days that followed were different.
Not because anything big had changed, but because now everything felt lighter. Easier.
Hanni liked the way your name appeared on her phone screen and she knew it was you before she even looked. She liked the way you held her hand without thinking, as if your fingers already knew the way to hers.
She liked how your presence had become part of her routine—and how right it felt.
Now, you weren’t just someone she exchanged notes with on napkins or flirted with over cups of coffee.
You were her person.
And for the first time, Hanni allowed herself to feel all of this without hesitation.
That night, you were sitting on the terrace of the café where it all began.
There was no rush.
The streets were quiet, lit by streetlights and closed storefronts. The smell of coffee mixed with the cold night air, and the sound of the cups being washed inside was the only thing that broke the comfortable silence between you.
Hanni looked at you.
You were distracted, fiddling with the rim of the cup, a small smile on your lips.
And it was in that moment, in that simple instant, that Hanni realized something.
She didn't need anything else.
She didn't need grandiose declarations or extravagant gestures.
All she needed was exactly that.
You.
The peace that came with being by your side.
And that was why, without thinking much, she said:
"I love you."
You blinked.
Your eyes met hers, surprised, as if trying to confirm if she had heard correctly.
Hanni didn't back away.
She didn't look away.
Because it was true.
And she wanted you to know it.
The silence stretched for a second.
And then, a smile slowly appeared on your lips.
You put the glass aside and took her hand, intertwining your fingers tightly.
And, with your eyes shining, you softly replied:
“I love you too.”
Hanni felt her heart expand in her chest.
She smiled.
You smiled back.
And, in that moment, she knew.
This was the beginning of something she never wanted to see end.

11. Lost in you

After that date in the park, something changed.
Hanni realized it the next day, when she picked up her phone to send you a message and didn't hesitate.
She realized it when she saw your name on the screen and, without even reading the message properly, she was already smiling.
She realized it when Danielle and Minji caught her distracted during lunch, staring into space with a dreamy look, and practically shouted:
“HANNI, YOU ARE COMPLETELY LOST!”
And, this time, Hanni didn't deny it.
Because it was true.
She like you.
A lot.
And more and more.
In the following days, you started seeing each other more often.
They weren't big dates, sometimes, you'd stop by the café during your work break to see her, sometimes Hanni would show up unexpectedly to walk you home.
It all seemed natural.
Until one night, on the way back from a walk, you suddenly stopped.
Hanni frowned. “What’s wrong?”
You hesitated, looking at her as if trying to decide something.
Then, slowly, you took her hand.
“Hanni,” you began, your voice softer than usual. “Can I ask you something?”
Her heart raced.
She swallowed hard. “You can.”
You took a deep breath and smiled.
“Could you be my girl?”
Hanni felt time stop.
All the street lights seemed to go out. All the sounds around her became distant.
All that existed was you.
And that question.
You were still holding her hand, but this time, there was a slight nervousness in your eyes — as if you were anxiously waiting for an answer.
And in that moment, Hanni realized something.
She didn’t need to think twice.
Because the answer had been inside her for a long time.
Then, squeezing your hand lightly, she smiled.
“Yes.”
The relief and happiness on your face were instantaneous.
You laughed softly, pulling her into a tight hug.
Hanni felt her heart race, but this time, instead of running away from the feeling, she just gave in to it.
She closed her eyes, feeling the heat of your body against hers, and knew she didn’t want to be anywhere else.
You pulled away just enough to look into her eyes.
And, before Hanni could say anything, your lips met hers once more.
This time, the kiss was different.
It was no longer a flirtation, a test or a silent promise.
It was a certainty.
When you pulled away, you were still smiling.
“So now I can call you my girlfriend?” you asked playfully.
Hanni laughed, feeling her cheeks burn.
But she squeezed your hand back and, with a twinkle in her eye, replied.
“Yes.”

10. You too?

Tumblr media
The next morning, Hanni woke up before the alarm clock.
She tried to go back to sleep, but the anticipation of the date wouldn’t let her.
Her room was silent, but her mind wasn’t.
It was the first time she had taken the initiative, and it made her more nervous than she wanted to admit.
But when she picked up her cell phone and reread her chat with you — especially your last message — nervousness gave way to something else.
Expectation.
“So, what’s the plan?” Danielle asked, sitting at the kitchen table with a bowl of cereal.
Minji, beside her, raised a brow. "Yeah, Hanni. You finally asked her out. Now tell me where you're taking the girl."
Hanni picked up a cup of coffee, trying to look nonchalant. “Surprise.”
Danielle’s eyes widened. “Are you also doing this now?”
Hanni smiled, taking a sip of coffee.
Minji crossed her arms, analyzing her. “You look different.”
Hanni winked. “How different?”
Danielle smiled mischievously. “Confident.”
Hanni hesitated.
Maybe they were right.
She didn’t know exactly when she had stopped hesitating so much around you. Maybe because, with you, everything seemed easy.
And today, for the first time, she wanted to surprise you the way you always surprised her.
At 5:55 p.m., Hanni was already at the agreed place.
She chose a park farther away from the city, where there was a small lake and a peaceful trail. It wasn’t anything grand, but it was a place she liked, and wanted to share it with you.
She was adjusting her backpack strap when she heard footsteps.
She turned around.
And there you were.
Wearing comfortable clothes, hair slightly messy by the afternoon wind. Her smile appeared as soon as she saw you, and Hanni felt her heart stumble in her chest.
“Hi.” you said, stopping in front of her.
“Hi.”
Your eyes sparkled with curiosity. “So… where are we going?”
Hanni bit her lip, suppressing a smile. “Trust me?”
You blinked, surprised, before laughing softly.
“Definitely.”
She took your hand and started walking.
The park was even more beautiful at dusk.
The trees swayed gently in the wind, and the reflection of the sky on the lake created an orange hue on the water.
Hanni led you to a small wooden deck that stretched out over the lake.
She dropped her backpack on the ground and turned to you.
“I used to come here when I wanted to think.” she said, looking at the landscape. “I thought maybe you would like it."
You looked around and smiled.
“I love it.”
Hanni felt her heart heat up.
She reached down and opened her backpack, taking out a few things — a small towel, two bottles of iced tea, and a package of homemade cookies.
You watched everything with a twinkle in your eye.
“This is a picnic?”
Hanni hesitated, not sure if that sounded silly.
“…Kinda yes.”
But you smiled so big that any insecurity disappeared.
“Hanni,” you said, taking one of the bottles, “that was the sweetest thing anyone ever did for me.”
Her face grew hot.
“Don’t overdo it.” she murmured, looking away.
But you just laughed and sat down next to her on the deck, so close that your shoulders touched.
The silence between you was not uncomfortable.
It was lightweight. Natural.
After a few minutes, you spoke, in a low voice:
“Thank you for taking me here.”
Hanni turned her face to answer.
But before she could say anything, she felt your fingers gently touch hers.
You didn’t take her hand right away. You just left it there, as if you were waiting.
By giving her the choice.
Hanni looked at your hands, feeling her heart race.
Then, with a small smile, she turned her palm up and intertwined her fingers with yours.
Your grip was gentle, but firm.
And when Hanni finally looked at you, she saw you were already looking at her.
The wind blew lightly, messing up a few strands of your hair, and, without thinking, Hanni raised her free hand and tucked a strand behind your ear.
Your eyes locked with hers.
For a moment nobody moved.
And then, slowly, you leaned closer.
Hanni felt her breath catch in her chest.
Time seemed to slow down when your lips touched hers.
The kiss was calm, unhurried. A perfect fit, as if they had been waiting for this moment since day one.
When you pulled away, Hanni could still taste the soft tea on your lips.
You opened your eyes slowly, smiling slightly.
“Definitely the best date so far.” you muttered.
Hanni laughed softly, feeling her face heat up.
But for once, she didn’t try to hide it.
“So does that mean you’re going to accept the next one?”
You squeezed her hand lightly.
“Absolutely.”
And for the first time, Hanni realized that no matter how many dates you went on…
She would never get tired of being with you.

After the date at the bookstore, Hanni came home with a problem.
A problem called Danielle and Minji.
As soon as she entered the apartment, the two were on the couch, staring at her like two detectives waiting for a confession.
Hanni sighed. “You’re insufferable.”
“And you’re smiling too much.” Minji snapped, narrowing her eyes. “Then spill it.”
Danielle clapped her hands excitedly. "How was the date? Was it better than the second one? Was it more romantic? Did she hold your hand? Wait… DID SHE KISSED YOU AGAIN?!"
Hanni felt her face get hot.
And that was when she realized her mistake.
She should have denied it right away. Laughed and said Danielle was exaggerating.
But hesitated.
And that was enough.
They both screamed at the same time.
"I KNEW!" Danielle jumped off the couch. “HANNI, LOOK AT YOU!”
Minji pointed at her, smiling as if she had just solved a great mystery. “And now you can’t deny that you like her anymore.”
Hanni crossed her arms, feigning indifference. “I never denied it.”
They both stopped.
Danielle’s eyes widened. “Wait. What?”
Minji smiled slowly. “Repeat that.”
Hanni looked away, uncomfortable.
She didn’t know exactly when she had accepted this internally.
Maybe it was at the arcade, when she realized how much she liked competing with you.
Or at the planetarium, when you called her Cassiopeia, just because you think looks like her.
Or maybe it was in that bookstore, when you held her hand on the table as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
She like you.
And that didn’t scare her anymore.
Minji and Danielle were waiting.
Hanni sighed and looked at them.
“I like her, okay?”
They both screamed even louder.
Hanni covered her ears. "Oh my God, you guys live with me! Can you not make me deaf?!"
Danielle ignored her completely. “YOU NEED TO ASK HER FOR A FOURTH DATE.”
Minji nodded. "Before she calls first. You need to get ahead."
Hanni hesitated.
Not because she didn’t want to — she did. But she had never been the type to make the first move.
But at the same time…
She remembered your voice calling her.
Your smile before you held her hand.
The way you looked happy every time you saw her.
Maybe it was her turn to surprise you.
Minji noticed your expression change and smiled. “You already know what to do, don’t you?”
Hanni picked up her phone.
She stared at the screen for a moment.
And then, taking a deep breath, she typed:
“My turn to choose the place. Are you free tomorrow?”
The phone vibrated almost immediately.
“I’m always here for you.”
Hanni’s heart raced.
And, without being able to stop it, a smile appeared on her lips.

You never knew exactly where you stood with Karina.
Sometimes, she was a calm sea, holding your face in her warm hands, her eyes shining like you were the most precious thing she had ever touched. Other times, she was a storm, distant and cold, her sharp words tearing apart any certainty you thought you had about what they were.
Today, it was a storm.
You knew it from the moment you met her at the coffee shop, sitting at the table, her eyes lost in her phone, her fingers drumming against the porcelain of her coffee cup. She barely looked up when you arrived, just a short wave and a dry murmur.
“Hi.”
It was a cruel contrast to the night before, when she had hugged you on the couch, her fingers drawing slow circles on your back, whispering between kisses: “I’ve never loved anyone like this.”
Now, it was like you were a stranger.
“Is everything okay?” you asked, trying not to sound fragile, trying to ignore the tight knot in your stomach.
Karina sighs, finally looking at you, but her gaze doesn’t carry the same warmth as before.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Her indifferent tone hits you harder than any scream. You force a small smile, looking away at the untouched coffee on the table.
“I don’t know… you seem different.”
She laughs, but it’s not a laugh that warms you. It’s short, emotionless.
“You always think that.”
And that’s when you realize: it’s going to be another one of those days.
The coffee goes cold between you, the silence drags on like an unbearable weight. You try to make conversation, try to reach her, but Karina answers with monosyllables or distracted murmurs. The same pattern as always. You reach out across the table, hoping to intertwine your fingers with hers, but she steps back, grabbing her phone before you can touch her.
Your chest tightens.
You wanted to understand. I wanted to know what makes Karina sometimes seem like the sweetest, most caring person you’ve ever met, and other times, like she wants to push you away.
And the worst part of all? You never know which version of her you’ll find.
“Do you want to go home?” you ask, swallowing the insecurity that threatens to spill over into your voice.
Karina finally looks up from her phone, staring at you for a moment too long. Then, she sighs.
“Whatever.”
That hurts more than a “no.”
The walk to her apartment is silent. You walk next to Karina, but it feels like you’re miles away. The cold of the night makes your skin shiver, but what really bothers you is her distance, the way her hands remain in her coat pockets instead of holding yours.
When you enter the apartment, Karina throws her keys on the table and sits on the couch, grabbing the remote.
“Are you just going to stand there?” she asks without even looking at you.
You hesitate before sitting down next to her, trying to ignore the feeling of stepping on broken glass. For a while, the only sound in the room is the TV. You force yourself to lean a little closer to her, looking for any sign of reciprocity. But Karina remains still, as if her presence means nothing.
You feel like asking: why are you like this with me? But you swallow the question, because you know the answer would be vague or some excuse.
So, you just stay there, next to her, trying to ignore the tightness in your chest, trying not to think about how, a few nights ago, Karina looked at you with loving eyes, murmuring against your skin: “I’m yours.”
You wonder if she really was. If she ever will be.
And, as always, you decide to wait. Even if it hurts.

you shouldn't be here. not like this. but here you are, standing in the middle of her bridal shower, watching yunjin laugh like the world doesn't already belong to someone else.
the room is buzzing, alive with conversation and clinking glasses, a celebration of love, happiness, of her. and yet, for all the noise, all the warmth, you feel like you're somewhere else entirely—adrift in a sea of white tablecloths and pastel decorations, drowning in something that no one else can see.
she's glowing, surrounded by people who adore her, and you should be one of them.
you are one of them. but it doesn't feel the same. because when they look at yunjin, they see a bride-to-be, a woman on the verge of forever. when you look at her, you see every moment before this one—the late-night phone calls, the way she'd pull you into her side without a second thought, the laughter that always sounded just a little softer when it was meant for you.
she catches your eye from across the room, and for a second, it's like nothing has changed. like she's still your best friend, the girl who swore she'd never get married, who once joked it would be the two of your against the world.
she waves you over, beaming, and you go to her because you always do. because you don't know how to be anything but hers, even if she was never really yours to begin with.
her arms wrap around you, pulling you in close, and she smells like jasmine and vanilla, like familiarity, like something that's slipping through your fingers faster than you can hold onto it.
"you okay?" she asks, her voice quiet in your ear.
you swallow around the lump in your throat, nodding before you even think about it. "of course. why wouldn't I be?"
she smiles, like shes believing you. like she has no idea that you've spent years trying to unlove her, only to fail. and as she turns away, back into the arms of a future that doesn't have room for you, you wonder if you'll ever get used to this feeling—the slow, sinking ache of losing something that was never really yours.
you shouldn't be here, but you are.
watching the girl you love become someone else's. and the worst part is—you don't know how to leave.
maybe it's the way she keeps looking at you, like she expects you to say something, like she needs you to be here. or maybe it's just you, unable to walk away, unable to accept that this is how the story ends.
the night has quieted down, the hum of voices fading as people drift off, lost in their own conversations. but yunjin—she finds you. she always does.
"come outside with me?" she asks, already reaching for your wrist, and you nod because you don't know how to tell her no.
the air outside is cooler than it was earlier, the evening settling in with a quiet kind of ease. yunjin had pulled out here without much of an explanation—just her hand wrapped around your wrists, her touch still light but insistent, dragging you away from the noise, away from the warmth of celebration that wasn't yours to be apart of.
and now, she's sitting beside you on the porch steps, knees pulled up to her chest, the skirt of her dress spilling over the wood like water.
"I still can't believe this is happening," she says, exhaling softly, like the weight of it all is finally catching up to her. "like, it doesn't feel real, you know? one second, we were just kids, and now—" she gestures vaguely, the diamond on her finger catching the porch light. "now i'm getting married."
you nod, because that's what you're supposed to do. agree. smile. pretend your heart isn't lodged somewhere in your throat. yunjin looks so pretty like this, in a kind of way that makes your chest ache. but then again, she always looks pretty. not the way people say it casually, not like an afterthought, but in a way that feels undeniable, inescapable.
it's something you've always known, something you've spent years swallowing down, locking away, because what else were you supposed to do with it? what were you supposed to do with a love that had nowhere to go?
"you're going to be so happy," you say, even though the words taste wrong on your tongue. they sound real enough to her, though, because she smiles, nuding you lightly with her shoulder.
"you think so?"
you nod again, the lie slipping out too easily. "yeah. yeonjun's a lucky guy." you don't mean it, but she doesn't notice. or maybe she does and just doesn't say anything. instead, she slides the ring off her finger, turning it over in her palm before reaching for your hand.
"here, let me see something," she murmurs, slipping it onto your finger. it's loose, not quite the right fit, but it still sits there, cold and unfamiliar against your skin.
yunjin tilts her head, studying it, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "it looks so much prettier on you," she says, almost wistfully. "you should get married someday, too."
you freeze, just for a second, at the weight of her words. you shouldn't react like this. you've been friends forever. she's touched you a million times before—linked pinkies, shared beds, held onto you like you were worth something worth holding onto. but this is different.
it shouldn't be, but it is.
you force a chuckle, shaking your head like it's nothing. like it doesn't make your throat tighten. "married life wouldn't suit me," you say, your voice even, steady. lying comes easy when it's for her sake.
she pouts, nudging your shoulder. "why not?"
you don't answer. because the truth is, it would suit you—if it were her. if it were her standing beside you in some quiet little chapel, slipping a ring onto your finger for real.
but it's not. it never will be.
so instead, you slide the ring off, pressing it back into her palm. "because i'd have to find someone as pretty as you first," you tease, because teasing is easier than telling the truth.
yunjin laughs, shaking her head, tucking the ring back where it belongs. where it was always meant to be.
and as she leans against you, shoulder to shoulder, like she doesn't feel the ache curling inside your chest, you pretend—just for a moment—that this is enough. that it will ever be enough.
Tumblr media
the day you've been dreading is here.
the morning of the wedding is too bright, too loud. the sunlight filters through the hotel curtains in soft golden streaks, bathing everything in warmth, and it almost feels cruel. like even the universe is celebrating something you wish wasn't happening.
you sit on the edge of the bed, watching as yunjin twirls in front of the mirror, her wedding dress fanning out around her like something out of a dream.
"how do I look?" she asks, turning to you with a grin, eyes sparkling with something so genuine, so happy, that it makes you want to throw up.
like the most beautiful person i've ever seen.
you swallow the words before they can escape, forcing a smile instead. "perfect," you say, and you think maybe she believes you.
the room is filled with other people—bridesmaids, makeup artists, stylists—all bustling around, adjusting veils and fluffing skirts, but it feels like it's just the two of you. like the world has shrunk down to this moment, to this aching, unbearable moment where she's glowing for someone else.
yunjin moves to sit beside you, her bare shoulder brushing against yours. " I feel like I should be more nervous," she admits, picking at the fabric of her dress. "like, shouldn't I be freaking out?"
you let out a breathy laugh, staring down at your hands. "I mean, it's a big deal," you say. "your whole life is about to change."
"yeah..." she sighs, tilting her head against your shoulder like she's done a million times before. like it doesn't mean something different today. "you'll still be around though, right? things won't change too much?"
the words cut through you like a knife, sharp and unforgiving. because things will change. she'll belong to someone else, not that she's ever belonged to you in the first place. she'll have a home that isn't yours, a life where your just a guest, an afterthought.
"of course," you lie, because what else can you do?
yunjin hums in content, like she believes you. like she doesn't see the way your hands are clenched into fists in your lap.
and then, before you can stop yourself, before you can think better of it, you whisper, "do you love him?"
she pulls away slightly, just enough to look at you. "what?"
you force yourself to meet her gaze, ignoring the way your throat tightens. "yeonjun. do you love him?"
there's a pause. a beat too long, too hesitant, and for the first time, you see something flicker in her expression—uncertainty, maybe, doubt. but then it's gone, replaced by a soft, wistful smile.
"I think so." she says, and it's the think that does you in. because it's not I know. it's not without a doubt.
it's a I think so.
but that's not enough to change anything.
so you nod, offering her the same empty reassurance you've been giving yourself for years. "then that's all that matters."
and as she reaches for your hand, squeezing it in silent gratitude, you can't help but wonder if she'd be standing here in this dress, in this moment, if she had ever looked at you the way you've always looked at her.
the music swells, and the moment you've spent month dreading—years, even—finally arrives.
the ceremony is surreal. the soft hum of the music fills the air, and everything feels too bright, too perfect in a way that makes your stomach turn. you're sitting in the front row, next to the other bridesmaids, your hands tightly folded in your lap as you try to convince yourself that this is where you belong. but it's impossible.
impossible to focus on anything but the way yunjin looks, the way she moves with such grace, her every step so confident as she makes her way down the aisle. and yeonjun is waiting at the altar, his grin wide, proud, but all you can do is stare at the way her dress sways, the glint of her ring in the sunlight.
you want to look away. you want to be anywhere but here, but you can't. your gaze is locked on her, and you wonder—how does she look this beautiful? how can she be so perfect and still marrying someone else?
your chest tightens, but you try to steady yourself, looking down at your hands in your lap, focusing on the feel of the fabric of your dress beneath your fingertips. but the sounds of her heels tapping again the ground is too loud, too clear, and before you know it, you've looked up.
her eyes catch yours in the sea of faces, and for a second, time stops. her smile is soft, bittersweet, like she's holding onto something—someone—but it's fading in her eyes.
it's when yunjin is finally standing up there, face to face with yeonjun, that you see it.
the shift.
a subtle change in her expression, a crack in the perfection she's been radiating. her hands tremble just a little as she reaches for him, and it's there—the moment you see it, the moment you feel it deep in your chest.
she regrets it.
it's a fleeting thought, one you try to push aside because it's stupid, and it's selfish, and you know better than to let hope get in the way of what's happening. but you can't ignore it. you see the way her gaze flickers, the way her lips press together, and something inside you aches, sharp and cruel.
she's standing there, in front of him, but you can see it—the same thing you've seen in her for years. she's not really here anymore.
but you don't say anything. you don't speak, because it could be nothing. you could just be reading her wrong, and you want so badly to believe that's true.
it's her turn to share her vows, and you hold your breath, your heart hammering in your chest in your chest as she takes a small step forward. for the first time since this whole thing started, she looks away from yeonjun, and her head turns slowly, deliberately—her eyes searching for yours.
your heart skips a beat.
and then, she smiles.
it's not the same smile she's been giving yeonjun—the one that's full of promises, of certainty. no. this is different. this smile is for you, just for you, like it always has been. and for one perfect moment, the weight of the worlds lifts off your shoulders, and it feels like everything you've ever wanted is within reach. but before you can even process it, she turns her head back to him, her smile faltering as she begins her vows.
the words don't come out the way yunjin wants them too.
her voice shakes, just slightly, and each syllable feels like it's getting harder for her to say. as if the vows don't sit right with her. as if the words she's speaking are wrong, but she's forcing them out anyway.
you want to scream. you want to run up there and drag her away before she can finish, before she can say anything that will make it permanent. but you don't. you stay seated, quiet, watching the love of your slip further and further out of your reach with every word she says.
and then, the moment you've been dreading arrives—the moment you feared the most. the officiant's voice is steady, calm, asking the question that makes everything real.
"do you, choi yeonjun, take huh yunjin to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
"i do." his voice is strong, sure. like he has no doubts.
you do.
you can feel them creeping in, crawling under your skin like something alive.
the officiant turns to yunjin. "and do you, huh yunjin, take choi yeonjun—"
her breath hitches. the room holds still.
silence.
you grip the edges of your dress, nails digging into your palms.
yunjin's hands tremble at her sides. her chest rises and falls, lips parting, closing, parting again. she's frozen. stuck in the space between a life she's chosen and the one she's just now realizing what she wants.
and then, finally, she exhales.
"I...I don't."
a collective gasp echoes through the room, but all you hear is the sound of your own heartbeat.
yeonjun stares at her, stunned, lips parted in shock. the officiant fumbles for words, the guest whisper in hushed confusion—but none of it matters. none of it registers. because yunjin is already moving, stepping away from the altar, away from him, away from the life she almost let slip through her fingers. and without thinking, without hesitating, you're on your feet, following her.
because maybe—just maybe—she's finally found her way back to you.
Tumblr media
you find her by the pond.
far away from the ceremony, from the murmurs and whispers, from the life she almost stepped into. she's sitting on the edge of the water, the hem of her dress soaked, floating like a ghost against the surface. the moonlight catches on the tear tracks staining her cheeks, and for a moment, you almost convince yourself to turn around.
but leaving her? that was never an option. not then. not now.
you take a step forward, then another. the grass is damp beneath your shoes, the air thick with the scent of rain that hasn't yet fallen.
"go away."
her voice is raw, barley above a whisper, but it still cuts. sharp, direct. she doesn't turn to look at you, her gaze fixed on her own reflection in the water, like she's trying to find answers in the ripples.
but you don't move.
because you've never been able to walk away from yunjin.
instead, you lower yourself beside her, close enough to feel the warmth radiating from her skin, close enough that you can hear the shaky breaths she's taking. the fabric of her dress pools around you, wet and heavy, but she doesn't care.
for a while, neither of you speak.
then, suddenly, she does.
"I couldn't do it."
her voice cracks, and you don't realize you're holding breath until she keeps going.
"I was standing up there, looking at him, listening to him say all those things—about love, about forever—and I just... I couldn't say it back." she exhales, shaky and uneven, hands gripping at the fabric of her dress like she's trying to ground herself. "I thought I loved him. I wanted to love him. but I didn't. I don't. and the second I realized that, i—"
she lets out a bitter laugh, shaking her head.
"I ruined everything."
you don't know what to say. so you don't say anything.
you just watch her, the way her lips tremble with every breath, the way the moonlight catches on her features, softening the edges of something sharp and broken.
she looks beautiful. she's always looked beautiful.
and maybe it's the way she's finally saying the things you've wanted her to say for so long. maybe it's the way her lips part, the way her breath becomes uneven, the way she looks at you—eyes glossy, searching, like she's trying to figure something out that she should've known all along.
or maybe it's just that you're tired of waiting.
your body moves before you can think. before you can even breathe.
one second, you're sitting there, staring at her. the next, your hands are cupping her face, your lips crashing into hers, and—god. it's everything and nothing all at once.
her lips are soft, warm, the faint taste of peach chapstick lingering between you. you've spent years watching her apply it, that stupid little tube always tucked in her pocket, always leaving behind that barely-there sheen. and now, here you are, finally knowing what it feels to taste it.
yunjin freezes for half a second—just long enough for fear to creep in, for your brain to scream at you that you've made a mistake.
but then, she exhales against your lips. and kisses you back.
and just like that, nothing else matters.
not the soaked dress, not the abandoned wedding, not the fact that this is years too late and somehow still right on time. because right now, there is only this.
her hands gripping at your shoulders, your fingers tangling in the delicate fabric of her dress, the way she tilts her head to deepen the kiss, like she's finally letting herself have what she's been too afraid to want.
and if this is a mistake—if this is something that will break you both apart in the morning—you don't care.
because for once, finally, yunjin is choosing you.
the kiss ends as quickly as it began, but the air between you is thick, charged. yunjin pulls away first, her breath still shaky, her wides wide and wide awake, like she's just woken up from a long dream.
for a moment, neither of you speak.
and then she touches her lips, almost as if she's trying to feel the remnants of what just happened, her fingers brushing the spot where you'd kissed her. you can hear her soft, unsteady breath as she pulls her hand away and stares at you, as if trying to piece together all the shattered parts of her heart.
her voice cracks, low and uncertain, but it's enough to send a jolt straight through your chest. "tell me this wasn't just a moment," she whispers, the words barely leaving her lips, they're heavy.
your heart stops.
you want to lie, you really do. you could tell her it was a mistake. that it was just a moment of weakness, that it meant nothing. that it would be okay, that you'd walk away and pretend nothing happened.
but you can't.
because it wasn't just a moment.
it's been years.
you've been waiting for her, loving her in silence, drowning in your own heartache, and you can't pretend anymore.
you take a deep breath, swallowing the lump in your throat as your eyes meet hers. "no, it wasn't just a moment," you say, the truth spilling from your lips like it's been there all along, waiting for her to hear it. "i've loved you, yunjin. for as long as I can remember. and I know this isn't how it's supposed to be. I know you're supposed to marry him, but..."
you trail off, unsure of what to say, but the look in her eyes—the raw, open disbelief—tells you she's hearing you.
her gaze flickers to the ground for a second, as if she's trying to make sense of everything, but then she meets your eyes again. and in that moment, you see it.
the realization.
"god," she breathes, her voice a whisper full of regret. "I should've known. I've always known, haven't I?"
and just like that, everything shifts. the distance between you two disappears in an instant, and you're not sure if she's going to break down or pull away, but when she steps closer, you think your heart might shatter.
"I was just too scared," she admits, a small, broken laugh escaping her lips. "i've always been scared of what this could be. scared of what we could. but i..."
her words falter again. and just like that, the uncertainty from earlier turns into something more concrete. yunjin takes a step towards you. then another. and before you know it, she's standing right in front of you, her eyes searching yours.
“I never wanted to hurt you,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “but I’ve been so blind. and now...”
and now you’re not sure if she’s asking for permission or if she’s just waiting for you to take the next step. but this time, you’re not letting her go.
you take her hands, the ones that tremble slightly in yours.
“I’m here,” you whisper, your voice steady despite the pounding of your heart. “I’ve always been here. and I’ll always be here.”
yunjin's lips curl into a small, uncertain smile, the one she only shows when she’s finally let go of all the walls she’s built around herself. “then maybe we still have time,” she says softly, the weight of the words hanging between you.
and for the first time in your entire life, you allow yourself to believe it.

Hanni never believed in spontaneous romances—until she met you. Hanni realizes that this time, and for the first time, she doesn't want to run away.

As soon as they entered the bookstore, Hanni felt her heart slow down.
The place was quiet, lit by yellowish lights that made everything more cozy. The smell of coffee and new paper mixed in the air, and a few people were spread out on the tables, some reading, others writing.
She didn't want to admit it, but... You hit the nail on the head.
"Did you like it?" you asked, watching her expectantly. Hanni feigned disinterest, crossing her arms.
“It's... acceptable."
You laughed softly. "That was a disguised 'yes'."
She snorted, but couldn't hide the small smile that escaped.
Without letting go of her hand, you gently pulled her to one of the shelves.
"There's great coffee here. And we can choose a book to read together." Hanni blinked, surprised.
"Read... together?" You glanced at her sideways.
"What? Did you think I was going to challenge you to another pinball game?"
She laughed, shaking her head. “Honestly? Yes.”
You smiled. “I thought it would be nice to change it up a bit.”
Hanni looked at the books in front of her. Her fingers slid along the spine of one of them, feeling the texture of the paper, and realized she liked the idea.
A lot.
After a few minutes of exploring the shelves, you finally chose a book and settled down at one of the tables in the attached café.
Two cups of hot chocolate steamed next to the book open between you.
“Okay…” you said, running your finger over the words on the page. “Do you want to read it out loud or do you want me to?”
Hanni narrowed her eyes. “This feels like a test.”
You laughed. “Maybe.”
She pretended to consider it.
“Okay,” she said, taking the book. “But if I misspell a word, you pretend you didn’t hear it.”
“I promise.”
With a soft sigh, Hanni began to read.
At first, she felt a little strange. The idea of reading out loud, with you watching every intonation, seemed intimidating. But as the words flowed, she relaxed.
The atmosphere was calm. The warmth of the hot chocolate between her fingers was comforting. And your gaze on her, far from being a burden, seemed like a silent encouragement.
When she finished the passage, she put the book down and found you smiling.
“What?” she asked, suspicious.
“Nothing.” you answered, resting your chin on your hand. “I just like your voice.”
Hani felt a shiver down her spine.
She looked away from the cup of hot chocolate, trying to hide her heated face.
“How cliché.” she murmured, raising the cup to her mouth.
You laughed softly.
But, before you could tease her further, Hanni’s cell phone vibrated on the table.
She picked up the phone and sighed when she saw Danielle’s name on the screen.
Danielle: Where are you? Minji and I want details about the date RIGHT NOW.
Hanni snorted, but couldn’t help but smile.
You noticed. “Danielle?”
“And Minji.” She rolled her eyes. “They both decided to become my personal love life advisors.”
You laughed. “They seem excited.”
“Too excited.” Hanni corrected. “If she could, Danielle would have planned our wedding already.”
You raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Oh, yeah?”
Hanni realized what she had said too late.
Her face heated up instantly.
“That’s not what I meant—”
You laughed and, before she could sink into a hole of embarrassment, held her hand across the table.
Hanni held her breath.
Your touch was soft, but firm. Your thumb glided lightly against her skin, a small gesture, but it made her heart race.
When she looked at you, she saw that mischievous glint in your eyes.
“If Danielle is already planning all this,” you began, leaning in slightly, “I think we should give her more material.”
Hanni blinked. “What—”
Before she could finish her sentence, she felt his lips brush lightly against the warm skin of her cheek.
It was quick, almost innocent.
But enough to make her stomach turn.
You pulled away slowly, watching her reaction.
Then, smiling, you said softly, “Now you can send them the details of the meeting.”
Hanni was speechless. Her face was hot. Her heart was racing. She opened her mouth to respond, but in the end, all she could do was hide her face in her hands, while you chuckled softly across the table.
She was definitely screwed.
And she definitely didn't care about it anymore.

Hanni's heart skipped a beat when she read your message.
A third date.
Today.
She was still trying to process this when Dani snatched the phone from her hands and started typing.
"Okay, since you're just going to stand there frozen, I'll answer it myself."
"DANI, NO!"
Hanni tried to get the phone back, but Minji grabbed her arm, laughing.
"Calm down, it'll be something simple."
Minji pressed 'send' and only then handed the phone back to Hanni, who quickly read the message.
"That sounds like a challenge. Where and what time?"
Hanni closed her eyes, exhaling a long sigh. "I hate you guys."
Dani smiled. "That's bullshit. You love us and you know we help you."
The phone vibrated again.
You answered.
“6pm. But this time, I’m the one who chooses the place. Just trust me, Pham.”
Hanni’s stomach churned.
The simple way you called her was enough to unsettle her.
But now, she couldn’t back down anymore.
“So?” Minji asked anxiously. “You’re going, right?”
Hanni sighed.
She looked at her phone screen once more and, before she could think too much, typed her reply.
“See you at 6pm.”
The hours passed too quickly.
This time, Minji and Dani didn’t have to drag Hanni to get ready — she started getting ready herself without complaining. Which, of course, only made her friends even more convinced that she was lost in the middle of that passion.
And maybe they were right.
At 5:55pm, Hanni left the house.
Her heart was pounding as she walked to the meeting point. With each step, her anxiety grew, but at the same time, there was something comforting in knowing that you would be waiting for her.
And there you were.
Leaning casually against a lamppost, checking your phone, but as soon as you felt her presence, you looked up.
And smiled.
Hanni paused for a second, holding her breath.
Why the hell was your smile affecting her so much?
You pushed yourself away from the lamppost and walked over to her.
“Hi.”
It was simple, but there was something soft in your tone, like you were genuinely happy to see her.
“Hi…” Hanni replied, and then crossed her arms. “So, where are we going this time?”
You smirked.
“Surprise.”
Hanni narrowed her eyes, suspicious.
You held out your hand to her.
“Trust me?”
Hanni looked at your hand for a moment.
And then, for the third time, without hesitation, she took it.
“Let’s see.”
The walk was quiet, and Hanni realized they were heading to a different part of the city. She looked around, trying to guess where they were going, but you seemed determined to keep it a mystery.
Until they stopped in front of a small but charming building.
Hanni frowned as she looked at the illuminated sign at the entrance.
“A… bookstore?”
You smiled. “Not just any bookstore.”
She looked around. The place seemed discreet, but cozy. Through the windows, she could see rows of wooden bookshelves and a few small tables with cups of coffee next to stacks of books.
Her heart sped up a little.
You noticed.
“I remember that at the café, you were always with a book or studying,” she explained. “So I thought maybe you would like this place.”
Hanni was silent for a moment.
You had thought about her when you were planning this.
Not just what you wanted to do, but what she would like.
And that… meant a lot.
She tried to pretend she wasn’t so affected.
“What if I didn’t like reading?” she asked, crossing her arms.
You laughed. “I think I would know if that was the case.”
Hanni tried to keep her pose indifferent, but deep down, a small smile appeared on her lips.
“Shall we go in?” you asked, still holding her hand.
She took a deep breath and nodded.
“Let’s go.”
And then, together, you went in.
Hanni didn’t know what this meeting meant.
But she knew she wanted to find out.

You may have never noticed, but Aeri was always there. Watching you.
Her eyes followed your every move, attentive to your quirks, your absent-minded gestures. She studied you with an almost meticulous care.
The first time you noticed it was in the college cafeteria.
You were laughing with your friends when, by chance, you glanced in her direction. Only then did you realize that she was already looking at you. Normally, you would look away. But Aeri smiled.
A small smile, without showing her teeth, her eyes curved slightly.
After that day, it was impossible not to notice her. She was always around, always watching you. If she were a man, you might have found the way she stared at you strange.
But shit.
Aeri was beautiful as fuck.
You couldn't find it strange. In fact, you wanted to look back.
But it never went beyond that — exchanged glances, disguised smiles, sometimes a longer, more analytical look. You never had the courage to talk to her.
So, she took the initiative.
Light, relaxed steps, her eyes fixed on you. You only realized she was coming towards you when it was already late.
You flinched, but not because of the cold or the wind that hit your body.
It was her. Getting closer and closer. Her smile growing bigger, more confident.
“Hey.”
You could pretend you didn’t hear, you could just turn around and walk away.
But you couldn’t.
“Hey…” She stopped in front of you, too close.
“This is fun, but I’m tired.” She crossed her arms, and you froze.
“Um? Well… I…”
Aeri laughed. “Can I buy you a coffee?”
“I can’t have coffee.”
“Hot chocolate, then?”
“…Yes.”
For a moment, you felt ridiculous. You stared at her as if you had never seen a woman in your life. And it was even more embarrassing when Aeri mentioned it after you left the cafeteria.
“You don’t talk much, do you?” She smiled, tilting her head a little.
“Oh… I… I don’t think so.”
Aeri thought it was strange. You were the vice president of the debate club, always talking, always talking.
But with her…
With her, it was different.
She noticed that. And she noticed other things too.
You tried to ignore the ulterior motive in her eyes, but it was impossible.
“She’s going to kiss you any minute.” your friend once commented.
Or:
“For God, stop messing with the poor girl.”
But you always answered the same way: “We’re just building a friendship.”
You knew it was a lie.
Because, at every opportunity, your eyes would wander to her lips.
Plump. Pink. Kissable. Soooo kissable
The way she spoke, how the cherry glow made them even redder… They always caught your attention.
You thought you hid it well.
But you didn’t.
And then, it happened.
On the night shift, Aeri called you to the square.
You did it a few more times. But this time… Her tone was different. It made you curious.
You sat side by side, shoulders brushing, even though there was plenty of room on the bench. Neither of you wanted to move away.
Aeri talked excitedly about an anime she was rewatching, trying to convince you to watch it with her — at her house.
But then, she smiled. She tilted her head to the side, a light laugh escaping.
“Are you really listening to me?”
You nodded quickly. “Yes, yes! I am.”
She laughed breathlessly.
“Really? It seems like you’re more interested in my mouth.”
Your face burned. You turned forward, lowered your head, cringing in embarrassment.
“Sorry.”
“Sorry for what?” Her fingers brushed your arm, and then Aeri leaned in to whisper:
“I know what you want. Just do it.”
Your heart raced.
Normally, you weren’t this embarrassed.
But this was Aeri Uchinaga.
A girl to be fought over.
And she was asking you to kiss her.
“What?” You looked at her, finding a smile on her lips.
“Yes, do it.”
“What are you—”
“Y/N, I’ve already started talking to you, I’ve done my part.” She crossed her arms, arching an eyebrow. “Kiss me. Or… don’t you want to?”
“I want to…” you murmured.
Aeri seemed to want to say something more, but you didn’t give her time.
Your hands cupped her face, and your lips finally met.
Aeri was surprised, but gave in within moments.
The first thing you felt was the softness of her lips, fitting so well against yours, like pieces of a puzzle. As if something inside you had finally been completed.
The second thing was the taste. The cherry lip gloss, strong, sweet, addictive.
Her breath faltered against yours. Her fingers lightly tightened the hem of your blouse, searching for something to hold on to.
The kiss started hesitantly, but soon became more certain. Deeper.
Your hearts beat fast, almost in sync. The world around you disappeared. The heat between you grew, but there was a delicacy in that exchange. As if you had waited too long for this to ruin it in a hurry.
When you pulled away, Aeri slowly opened her eyes.
There was surprise in her eyes. And another thing.
Something that made your stomach churn with nervousness and anticipation.
She bit her lower lip, savoring the kiss, and smiled slightly.
“Wow…”
You met her gaze. “Good?”
“Very.”
“Can I kiss you again?”
Aeri arched her eyebrow.
“Why are you asking?” She smiled, her eyes shining. “Just do it.”
