Apparently in China peach wood (Along with the rest of the plant) is believed to have properties that repel evil spirits, a little similar to silver in European legends or iron for both European fae and West Asian/Middle eastern Jinn. Taoists sometimes keep swords made of peach wood because of this. This made me realize something. If you took a peach wood stick, and attached studs to it of both silver and iron you'd end up with a club or staff (or mace, flail etc.) that would have the weaknesses of many kinds of supernatural creatures while still retaining effectiveness as a normal weapon (peach is a hardwood and silver's poor edge retention doesn't matter for studs). You could even keep adding new stud materials to get something ridiculous that affects over 120 catalogued folkloric monsters. Since you just need a few little studs you could even get some really expensive materials like meteoric iron (a thumb tip sized meteorite can still cost like 10-20 bucks I think). I could somewhat feasibly make a weapon that affects every monster ever thought to walk the earth, from vampires and werewolves to jinn and jiangshi and even mankind.

the insane experience of missing a fictional character . like you can always go back and reread the book , replay the game , rewatch the show or movie , you can always go back & see them , but you can never experience them & their story for the first time again . its absurd to miss them because they'll always be there , but you'll miss when there were still new things for them to say .
for a small time they were real & growing and changing and you hung onto every new word, but now all they can do is repeat the same story forever&ever & they're not real anymore because you know everything they're going to do. & you miss them. its fucked man...

Do me a favour and reblog this with a show you like that was cancelled after only one season. I don't mean shows that were always meant to be miniseries or shows that work perfectly well as a standalone story, or shows that might still get renewed. I mean shows that are and will forever remain unfinished. The more obscure the better.

it's lazy in a different way but sometimes you aren't killing off that character's parents for an easy tragic backstory. sometimes you kill off the parents just so you don't have to write more characters.
#me killing balinor in my bbc merlin fanfic#like almost literally#because merlin potentially having siblings later in the timeline would be annoying as fuck to write because of all the consequences

actually fuck you worldbuilding
world where lines of succession and first-born are extremely important (not just for royalty, but also for common folk, but more emphasis is placed on royalty) because when you die, you can choose to stay behind as a ghost. except only your firstborn child can see and hear you.
royal families are built on this, with long lines of ghosts standing behind whoever the current ruler is. craftspeople who always have their parents in their ear telling them exactly how to be perfect.
this is consistent; a ghost can only see the ghosts it would have been able to see in life, so passing information from generations past is always a game of telephone.
of course this whole thing can be bluffed and exploited in a variety of extremely fun ways.
#it is not exactly this#but some of the points are aplicabale to my own original wip#not that its chance of complition or ever seeing the light of day is high#but it's fun to think about it anyway

the thing is that childhood doesn't just end when you turn 18 or when you turn 21. it's going to end dozens of times over. your childhood pet will die. actors you loved in movies you watched as a kid will die. your grandparents will die, and then your parents will die. it's going to end dozens and dozens of times and all you can do is let it. all you can do is stand in the middle of the grocery store and stare at freezers full of microwave pizza because you've suddenly been seized by the memory of what it felt like to have a pizza party on the last day of school before summer break. which is another ending in and of itself

It would be funny if nuclear waste warning messages become an attraction for future historical linguists.
I mean look at this thing:
A parallel text in 7 languages, with 4 different scripts between them! And pictograms! All designed to be preserved intact!
#something something curiosity kills the cat something something#the problem aint the dead cat but the whole litter of kittens it is going to take down with it

Enough about favorite books. What’s a book you read and absolutely hated? The book you’ve got a bone to pick with.
#the wheel of time#I have a friend who really likes them#so I was very disappointed when I didn't#there were a lot of things I found annoying#but how Mat's situation with Tylin and Tuon was handled just gave me an ick I couldn't overcome#I wanted to barf everytime Tuon called him “toy”#and it's not that I can't see the argument that it was Jordan making a point how sexual harassment is handled#when a male protagonist is the victim#it's just the way it is written doesn't convince me entirely that was the intention instead of just perpetuating the stereotype#and all the other sexist things too#and don't get me started on the spanking

For those not in the know, this is one of the Amanita mushrooms referred to as a Destroying Angel. Never, ever, ever, ever forage with an app. Especially for mushrooms.

I'm almost as white as anyone can be and you are definitely not insane. I won't lie and say I have noticed this on my own. But ever since someone has pointed this out to me, I have definitely seen it.
I am not sure if it is done on purpose or if this some kind of ingrained form of racism that creators do without even realizing or meaning to. I imagine it probably bit of both.
we need to invent a way to explain how deep running and pervasive and subliminal racism and antiblackness is without immediately sounding like an insane conspiracy theorist

Oh boy, I've got some bad news about how some versions of the Arthurian legend for you ...
Why did the writer's make Arthur have a thing for Morgana in season 1? Even if they didn't know they were going down the bio sister route yet, that's his father's ward, so basically his adopted sister. And I'm SURE the writer's knew they were going down the sister route. It's so weird to rewatch with hindsight.
