Prince Namor, Archetypal Byronic Hero

Byronic heroes are characterized by their brooding, charismatic, and morally ambiguous nature, and continue to be a subject of fascination and debate. While some find them alluring due to their complex internal conflicts and captivating personalities, others criticize their flaws and toxic and possibly harmful, anti-social behaviors. 

Namor, of course, fits these criteria to a T, down to the interminable debates about the nature of his morality.

The Byronic Hero was codified and popularized by the protagonists and antagonists in Lord Byron's works, including Childe Harold, Conrad, and Don Juan among others, and some would say Lord Byron's own public persona. However, earlier ur-examples can be found. These include Shakespeare's Hamlet and Macbeth, Werther by Goethe, and the Gothic villains of Anne Radcliffe.

Artist @ecairnsart Marvel Rivals' Concept Art for Emperor Namor & Empress Dorma

The Concept Art includes designs that are all new, exciting, and a departure from previously commissioned work, with the artist having free reign to design fashion concepts that could be implemented into the Marvel Rivals universe. These complimentary outfits for the royal aquatic couple showcase the artists creativity; silver fish scales/armor, a silvery netting accent, a more aquatic roman armor silhouette for Namor, with a laurel-style crown of silver fins as a nod to Namor's namesake, and the snake motifs as a nod to Dorma's snake belt, and Dorma's iconic finned collar as worn in the comics. Red textured fabric and silver make up the color palette to give Namor & Dorma a unified but distinct look. Jewelry accessories include crowns, silver arm bracers, arm circlets, necklaces made of red gems, and earrings.

Namor said to the United Nations secretary guard, “You dare reject Namor to this meeting of nations!?! Does the surface world not accept Atlantis as a nation, or is it because we lay below your oceans? Do these nations think that we can be overlooked, while the oceans that Atlantis control under my rule cover 70% of the planet?” and the nervous security guard said, “Actually your majesty, you can’t come wearing nothing but your pants.” Namor look down to see that he is wearing nothing but his trunks and Namor start to get an idea of what this foolish security guard is talking since most humans wear more clothes to cover themselves up.

All of these timelines and alternate universes collide into one and another is quite confusing to Namor as he just want to fight a simple enemy of his kingdom, not any of these cosmic threats that the other so called heroes can normally duel with.

Namor Nails™️, inspired by the black and aqua costume!

To create the diamond pattern, I painted the nail with the teal base and then with the glittery coat. Then, I cut an address label sticker into little diamonds to stick on the nail in the pattern. Then I painted over the top with the black polish and peeled off the stickers, leaving the glittery diamonds with the black outlines. I did basically the same for the half-moon design on the gold nail and added a gold seashell charm on top.

That concludes another amazing Namor week, thank you so much, Namor Nation, for being friends. My goal for this week was to use unconventional materials for my fan works, and push myself to learn new things. With my paper marbling, linocut, nail art, and jewellery making, I feel I definitely achieved this goal. If there's anything that Namor teaches us- and I mean if- it's to believe in yourself, and that the world is big and beautiful. You can make it even bigger and even more beautiful by creating things, with your own mind or your own hands. Inspiration is in the pages of a comic or in the line between the sea and the sky. It's especially in a community of fans. I love you, take care of yourself. Imperius Rex ;)
