Preparing for Our January Performance at ICP English Theatre Club

As summer winds down, I am getting more and more excited about the new season at the ICP English Theatre Club. We’ve just wrapped up the draft of our script for the upcoming musical, set to debut in January. While I’m keeping the details under wraps for now — no spoilers! — I can tell you this project is shaping up to be one of our most ambitious yet. We’re all filled with anticipation for what’s coming.

This year is particularly special because it marks our first-ever musical performance since the ICP English Theatre Club started. Each year, we explore different types of performances, and this time we’ve taken on the challenge of a musical to engage our audience even more. It’s an exciting new direction for us, and I’m eager to see how it all comes together.

We’ve also been fortunate to welcome some fantastic new talent to our team. It’s inspiring to see how people from such varied backgrounds come together, each adding something unique to our creative process. You can already see how their different perspectives are enriching our work.

Honestly, that’s one of the things I love most about theatre — how it brings people together in such a meaningful way.

Starting on September 7th, I’ll be away for a few weeks, but I’m leaving the group in Kamila’s capable hands. She’s one of our seasoned actresses, and she’ll be leading the rehearsals while I’m gone. Kamila has a keen eye for detail and really understands what makes a performance resonate, so I know the group will be in great hands during this crucial stage.

This production, like every show we’ve done before, goes beyond memorizing lines or nailing choreography — although those are important, of course. What really excites me is watching the actors dig deeper into their characters and make them their own. The process of taking a script and turning it into something that feels alive and genuine is what makes theatre such an incredible art form.

I’ve always believed that the real magic happens when actors start to connect with their characters on a personal level, and I can already see that happening as we prepare for January’s show.

Beyond the stage, what makes this club truly special is the friendships and bonds that have developed among the members. Over the summer, I’ve been delighted to see people meeting up for drinks in Prague’s pubs, attending opera and theatre performances together, and just generally spending time outside of rehearsals.

It’s wonderful to see how theatre has become a way not just to create art, but also to build lasting connections and community. This sense of camaraderie is something I hold dear — it’s what turns the hard work of theatre into a truly rewarding experience.

Of course, no production comes without its challenges. Creating a musical, especially for the first time, requires careful planning and constant adaptation. We’ve had moments where things didn’t go quite as planned, but that’s all part of the process.

Watching our initial ideas evolve into something real, something that feels like it’s truly taking shape, is one of the most satisfying parts of this journey. Every rehearsal brings us a little closer to our vision, and that steady progress is something we’re all proud of.

As we move toward January, I’m excited about what lies ahead. There’s still plenty of work to be done, but the enthusiasm and dedication from the team are contagious. I have no doubt that by the time January rolls around, we’ll have something truly special to share with our audience.

I have always loved the bold statement of a large sculpture, but there is something special about creating something that fits right in the palm of your hand. My "Art in Miniature" collection is just that—a series of decorative objects and jewelry that brings the essence of sculpture into everyday life. Made with resin and metals, each piece is carefully put together with precision in every detail, using different sculpting techniques.

This new direction came about from moving to Prague and having less room to work with, pushing me to think small in size but big in imagination. So here they are: tiny sculptures, each with its own character.

One of the most important contributors to our project is Kamila, an exceptionally talented costume designer. Her dedication to sustainable fashion brings vibrant and innovative energy to our productions. Kamila’s workspace is a living testament to the art of transformation, as she meticulously converts forgotten costumes and textiles from thrift stores into stunning and vibrant outfits that grace our stage. This process is not merely about recycling; it’s a profound statement on the value of reusing and repurposing in a world all too accustomed to disposability.

In contrast to the prevailing mindset in theatre, our ethos challenges the notion that costumes are only valuable during a show and can be discarded afterwards. Engaging in such practices only makes the environmental crisis worse. Our goal at the ICP English Theatre Club is to minimize its impact through the actions we take. By recycling costumes, we are taking a small but meaningful action to reduce waste and show the possibilities of sustainability in the arts.

Our philosophy also highlights the significance of integrating diverse viewpoints and life experiences into our narrative. On Stage and Beyond: Kamila's Journey with ICP English Theatre Club

Have you ever wondered how joining a theatre club can transform your life? After interviewing Michelle last April, who joined the theatre club in January, I thought it would be interesting to learn about a member who has been with us since the project started.

Today, we will hear from Kamila, a talented costume designer whose contributions have been vital to our theatre productions. Kamila joined us three years ago, right at the start of the project. Originally from Uzbekistan, Kamila shares her experiences of moving to Prague, learning a new language, and finding a creative outlet in theatre.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to Prague?

A: My name is Kamila. I’m 29 years old, and I’ve been living in Prague for three years. I moved here for work after graduating. I was looking for a job, and one company that offered me a position was based in Prague. So, that’s how I ended up here.

Q: How do you find living in Prague compared to Łódź?

A: Prague is much bigger, and there’s always something happening. You can go for a walk and end up seeing a performance or visiting a museum. I really enjoy living here. The culture is different, and even the temperature is different, but I love the vibrant atmosphere.

Q: How has learning Czech been for you?

A: It’s hard, very hard. I attended courses from the ICP Integration Centre of Prague, completing A1 and A2 levels. I have basic survival Czech; I can order food and beer, but that’s about it. I’m trying to improve, though.

Q: How did you find out about the ICP English Theatre Club?

A: I think I saw an ad on Facebook or maybe in a city newsletter. I had just finished my Czech courses and thought it would be cool to try something creative, like costume making, but I ended up performing instead.

Q: What was your first impression of the theatre club?

A: This is my first theatre club, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I really love the atmosphere and the community. It’s all international people, like me, who just came to Prague and are looking for friends or a place to practice English and perform. I really like it.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the theatre club?

A: I love the creativity and the freedom to express yourself. Even though we’re all from different backgrounds, we have something that connects us. Maybe it’s being an expat in a foreign country or our personality types, but there’s definitely a unique bond.

Q: What have you learned from being in the theatre club?

A: I’ve learned to slow down my speech, project my voice, and perform confidently. It’s taught me how to improvise, act, and be open with the public. There are many things I’ve learned.

Q: What are the requirements to join the theatre club?

A: The rules are pretty common sense: be polite, respect each other, no harassment or bullying. Other than that, there are no special requirements. You don’t have to be an actor or have any theatrical background. You just come as you are.

Q: How long have you been a member of the theatre club?

A: I’ve been with the theatre club for about two years. I’m taking a break this year, but I’ve been taking part in the first two years of the project, and I had a role in both performances.

Q: How did you feel about performing in those shows?

A: Performing was definitely exciting. The first performance was more children-oriented and really fun. We had time machines and future travel themes—it was very playful. The second performance was more philosophical. I opened up and shared my personal story, which was a bit scary but also very rewarding. Both experiences helped me grow and express myself in different ways.

Q: Do you have a memorable moment or activity from the theatre club?

A: One memorable activity was when we practiced speaking with corks from wine bottles in our mouths. It was difficult, but really helped with articulation. I remember that class clearly because it made a big difference in how I speak.

Q: Would you recommend the theatre club to others, and if so, why?

A: Absolutely. Joining the theatre club is great for making friends in a new country, practicing English, and developing public speaking skills. It’s also wonderful for personal development and learning how to perform on stage. The theatre club offers a supportive environment where you can grow and express yourself creatively.

Q: Any final thoughts on your journey with the theatre club?

A: Being part of the theatre club has been transformative. It’s allowed me to explore different aspects of myself and understand others better. Theatre is a powerful platform for expression and connection, making me feel less like an outsider and more like part of a community.

Crafting Compelling Theatre Musicals: Insights from a Lyric Writing Workshop

Have you ever been so captivated by the lyrics of a theatre performance that you felt every emotion they conveyed? Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of leading a workshop with the ICP English Theatre Club. This session was a deep exploration of lyric writing for our upcoming musical in December. It was an enlightening experience that underscored the storytelling power of lyrics and provided us with valuable techniques for crafting songs that resonate deeply with the audience.

Today, I’m excited to share these insights and practical tips with you, hoping to inspire and assist you in composing compelling and heartfelt lyrics for musical theatre.

In our workshop, we began working on the very first song of our play. This is where the audience first learns about the character and connects with him emotionally. When writing this song, we aimed to portray vividly the character’s dreams and struggles, ensuring that every word clearly described him and his surroundings. The first song is crucial because it introduces the character’s main motivations and sets the tone for his development throughout the story.

Choosing the right words is just the beginning; the next step will be weaving the character’s spirit into the melody. For instance, the song’s tempo and pitch can rise when the characters’ dreams peak and soften when they feel hopeless. Indeed, when lyrics and music are perfectly synchronized, it creates a strong connection between the characters and the audience.

This enables the audience to experience deeper the emotions of the characters as they navigate the highs and lows of the story. After finalizing the lyrics, we will focus on crafting a melody that enhances these emotional arcs.

We took a careful approach to rhyming, focusing first on building a strong emotional foundation for the song. By examining Tina Turner’s ‘Simply the Best,’ we gained a deep understanding of the importance of a memorable chorus and how it anchors the entire song. Once we understood the central theme of our song, we experimented with various rhyme patterns to create a smooth, rhythmic flow in the lyrics.

Additionally, we considered how these rhyme schemes could enhance the song’s emotional impact and ensure that the lyrics contributed effectively to the narrative. This part of our process was crucial in striking a harmonious balance between the beauty of the lyrics and their role in advancing the story.

Metaphors and vivid imagery are essential in lyric writing because they help create powerful scenes that deepen emotional resonance and enrich the narrative. For instance, in the main song from my previous musical, “Welcome Back to School,” I used the metaphor of a “global village” to highlight the school’s multicultural community. This metaphor added significant depth to the song’s theme by emphasizing the unity and cultural richness within the school. By incorporating such techniques, lyrics can go beyond simple narration. They not only tell a story, but also evoke strong emotions and provoke thoughtful reflection.

Lyric revision is a deeply collaborative and iterative process that involves multiple stages of refining drafts to enhance a song’s emotional power and ensure it aligns perfectly with the musical’s themes. This collaborative critique process is essential because it allows for the inclusion of diverse perspectives. Fresh viewpoints can identify areas for improvement that might otherwise be missed, thus transforming a good song into an unforgettable one.

For example, in our workshop, peer feedback highlighted subtle nuances in the lyrics that could be adjusted to better convey the character’s emotions and motivations. This iterative process not only fine-tunes the lyrics but also helps in converting initial ideas into more polished, expressive verses that capture the emotional depth and complexity of the musical. By continuously revisiting and revising the lyrics, we ensure that each line contributes meaningfully to the story and resonates deeply with the audience.

From the initial idea to the final refinements, the process of writing lyrics is an ever-changing adventure of imagination and exploration. My aim in sharing these techniques and experiences is to illuminate the complex yet rewarding journey of crafting lyrics for theatre musicals.

The Art of Downsizing: My Journey into Small-Scale Sculpture

As sculptors accustomed to working on large pieces move to smaller homes, their approach to making art and the outcomes naturally change. This article explores the unique challenges and innovative solutions needed when a sculptor familiar with large projects starts working on smaller ones. Drawing from my experience of moving from a spacious studio in the UK to a tiny apartment in Prague, I’ll share how this significant change not only reshaped my approach to art but also led me to start my own small-scale sculpture studio.

Five years ago, when I moved from my UK studio to a smaller space in Prague, I immediately felt the squeeze. Previously, my work involved creating large installations with materials like fiberglass, plaster, and wire—materials that require a lot of space for both crafting and storing. The cramped new studio made me rethink and reduce the size of my projects, making it difficult to continue with large installations. This necessity motivated me to discover innovative materials and techniques.

In this new chapter, I turned my focus to resin, a material I had often used in my larger works, but now adapted for smaller projects. I also continued using wire, choosing finer types that were better suited for smaller, detailed works. This change sparked my interest in wire-wrapping techniques, allowing me to create intricate miniature sculptures that captured the essence of my artistic vision, even in a smaller size.

During my time as a sculptor who specialized in large-scale projects, I often found that my ambitious designs remained just sketches. These large artworks required a lot of time and materials, which meant using up lots of resources and needing careful planning to ensure everything was built correctly and safely—this took a lot of time. However, when I moved to a smaller studio in Prague, I discovered the benefits of working on a smaller scale.

This change allowed me to avoid many of the problems I faced with larger sculptures and significantly cut down the time needed to complete each piece. This shift made it possible for me to start turning those big ideas into smaller, more manageable sculptures.

I revisited an old draft for a project that involved using a large plaster base covered with fiberglass, a process that requires a lot of materials and is quite complex.

However, once I started experimenting with various types of resin for a small mold, things became much easier. Working on the downsized piece allowed me more time to focus on details and enhance the quality and precision of the original design. I expanded my exploration of materials for smaller projects to include foam, wood, metal, fabrics, and glass. I discovered that creating smaller sculptures enhanced my techniques, knowledge of materials, and productivity.

This journey to smaller sculptures taught me the value of flexibility and the potential for creativity in limited environments. It showed that artistic expression isn’t confined by space, but can be revitalized and enhanced through thoughtful adaptation.

This shift to creating small-scale sculptures deeply impacted both my personal identity and my professional growth. It wasn’t just a reduction in material and space use, but also a significant emotional journey that completely changed how I view sculpture.

Initially, the tighter limits seemed restrictive, but they quickly became a catalyst for deeper creative exploration. Focusing on smaller pieces allowed me to explore the subtleties of sculpture, uncovering levels of detail and sophistication that larger works couldn’t show. This close look at my craft made me feel more connected to my work and made me think deeply about what sculpture means to me.

As the coordinator of the ICP English Theatre Club, supported by the non-profit 'Integration Centre Prague,' and as a foreigner residing in Prague, I often encounter questions about my profound passion for the Performing Arts. This article aims to shed light on why theatre holds such significance for me. We'll explore how theatre transcends mere entertainment, fostering a sense of community that not only brings joy but also forges connections. Particularly, it becomes a haven for those of us who are beginning new lives in a foreign land, away from our families.

 

Establishing an International Community: It is incredibly important to create a sense of community as it plays a role in helping newcomers feel more comfortable in their new surroundings. Dr. Peggy Levitt, a sociologist, has conducted research on migration and emphasizes the significance of these communities. According to her findings, these international communities provide support systems that help individuals who are far from their home countries develop a sense of belonging while also gaining insights into cultures (Levitt, 2001).

 

Within the ICP English Theatre Club, our community it’s a small world where people from diverse backgrounds come together. During our meetings, we write and share our own stories and experiences, and so we learn from one another.

 

 

Within our club, members engage in scriptwriting and performances to vividly express the essence of their experiences. The stage acts as a dynamic platform, facilitating not just the exploration of one’s own emotions, but also enabling connections with others undergoing similar life situations. This immersive environment significantly enhances the ability to understand and empathize with a wide range of perspectives.

 

Establishing a Feeling of Security and Belonging: When you find yourself away from your home country, having the support of a community can truly make a difference. The research conducted by sociologist Dr. Alejandro Portes highlights how these communities transform into families that provide an inclusive environment where individuals can find emotional support and a sense of belonging (Portes & Rumbaut 2006).

 

Our theater club has grown beyond being a group. It has become akin to a tight-knit family! Our shared love for theatre goes beyond attending rehearsals and meetings. We value the connections we make within our theatre community, and that provides us with the support needed when overcoming the challenges of living abroad.

 

Empowering Through Public Speaking and Expression: Proficiency in public speaking and self-expression is crucial, transcending cultural barriers. Dr. Cicely Berry, a voice coach with extensive experience in theatre, explores how acting enhances public speaking skills and individual expression (Berry, 2000).

 

Within our club, members utilize scriptwriting and performance to voice the complexities of their foreign experiences. The stage becomes a transformative space, facilitating emotional navigation and connection with others facing similar challenges.

 

Art as a Catalyst for Personal Growth: Without limiting ourselves to the performing arts, it’s important to recognize that all kinds of artistic activities offer substantial benefits. Dr. James Catterall’s studies illuminate the positive effects that engaging in an array of arts—from visual and literary arts to music and drama—has on our mental health and overall happiness. The diversity of artistic experiences contributes to our personal growth in unique and meaningful ways (Catterall, 2012).

In this article, we will explore nine techniques to help you enhance your performance abilities.

1. Practice Regularly and Deliberately

Your dedication and passion for your chosen art form propel you to practice purposefully. It's not just about mindlessly repeating actions. The essence lies in passionately pursuing excellence and consistently striving to improve every aspect of your performance. To truly enhance your skills, adopt a strategic approach by dissecting your performance into smaller, manageable components. Consider each element with intent, whether it involves refining a single musical note, mastering a specific dance move, or perfecting the delivery of a line in a monologue.
