I always find it weird how much shit Robin gets for making music in English when for the longest time (even back when he started) that was the norm!
Isac Elliot started his career in English. So did Abreu. So did so many others. But one (1) guy chooses to do that willingly and everyone goes ’Noooo, that’s no good. Oh noooo.’
Shut up.

The Finnish music scene is just so beautiful.
If you've never heard Finnish music—never even heard of Finland—and were to watch a couple of videos to explain the country and its culture, the one thing about music you'd be most likely to run into and even hear Finns repeat over and over, is that it's the country of heavy metal music. We have the most metal bands. Welove metal. that's our kind of music.
That really undersells it.
Sure, we are a country that likes its metal. It is something that we're known for, and that forms a huge chunk of the music scene. The bands, the attention and audiences they draw here, the success they see outside of our country, that is something amazing. They certainly are some of the biggest ever in Finnish music.
Yet I almost never see that when I look at anything here, because from the inside that is just one small part. That's what makes it all so amazing.
If you look at the numbers, the one thing you see over and over is rap. The most listened to current artists, the breakthroughs and newcomers annually, the most listened to songs and albums, the biggest names in the scene. Such a different thing from the metal, yet it was a rapper who first sold out the olympic stadium as a solo act. And it is rap that makes up many of the classics that get played at every party ever. Both genres divide opinions and both genres are hugely popular in their own way.
And even condensing it down to that is doing a disservice to it, because what about pop? It doesn't get its name from popular for no reason. What do you hear on the radio when you open it? And what about iskelmä, the genre that is so perfectly Finnish that you can't really just call it pop because it is something more specific.
Then you get into the details, the different subgenres and different artists doing different things. We have our own kind of tango, we have interesting acts doing strange things and breaking through internationally.
We have bands that look up to the metal giants and try to reach for those same stars doing something similar yet new. We have young aspiring producers working around the clock to become the best they can in some old appartment with 5 other people doing the same thing only to get grammy nominations a few years later, because they can.
Because we have music here. A lot of it. Really good music.
It is no wonder that Finnish language music has been getting more popular in Finland. It is viable for artists to make a career off it. It is no wonder all Finnish music is getting more popular, when we have so much variety to it, so many different people across genres.
Okay, say what you will about how our country is 5 writers, 3 producers and a few singers in a trenchcoat. Say what you will about the fact that you could probably map out the entire Finnish music scene through people's connections to each other in one big spiderweb because for some reason everyone is so interconnected.
Our country is not big, but I'm just really awed by how much music resonates here, to generate such diversity and talent.
#finnish music#finland#I don't think I can word it but I tried#my little love letter to this thing I love called music from finland#I have so many thoughts and feelings about it all#and seeing people. especially finnish people. just say it's all metal all day makes me sad#because we have cool metal but it's cool because we have so much other cool shit too#and it all blends and works together and there is variety and ahhhhh#anyway. please ramble in the reblogs about your favourit artists or bands or anything at all#I love this shit so much
