Holywell Bay 18/12/2017

A typical winter Monday afternoon. In the lead up to Christmas I was granted the luxury of a day off from both university and work, however, this day was slightly different to the usual. My boyfriend was about to leave to travel to a concert and I found myself wondering what I might do with this rare free time.

A little birdie told me that despite the usual Cornish mizzle (misty drizzle) we were set for a cracking sunset. Do I wait for the postman to deliver the long awaited Christmas parcels? (Which I’d been waiting for ALL day!) or do I endure the cold and hope this birdie was truthful? The answer was obvious.

I arrived at Holywell Bay with minutes to spare before the sun was predicted to set. Jogging across the beach, tripod in hand, I saw the sky turn a flame-like orange and knew it would be a good one.

Being relatively new to the world of photography, I tend to fumble about hunting for the best settings for a little while before getting a decent image, but in this instance time was short and I didn’t know how long this fantastic sky was going to hang around. SO, firstly I started with some pretty standard settings and a quick shutter speed. This was great, the sky was great, the sun was simply beautiful and the colours were astounding but I felt something was missing.

I decided I wanted the sea to look mystical, silky and smooth. To achieve this I set my shutter speed to 8 seconds and my aperture to the highest number possible. I attached a ND filter, but the sky was still overexposed and I didn’t have any other fancy filters with me. So i used my iPhone. Yes.

Setting my camera into live view, I held my phone to cover the top section of my lens (the sky) for 5 seconds and removed it for the remaining 3 seconds. Wow, I instantly fell in love with the photo.

All in all, it was a pretty successful Monday. I’d like some more Mondays’ like that.
