Symphogear is a combination of different genres, from mahou shoujo (transformation sequences) to toku (action, enemies, violence). It's more like a celebration of otaku and pop culture interests cuz it will randomly insert a wild reference when the writer thinks it's funny. It's more enjoyable after you become familiar with tropes from other shows, or this could be your introduction to them (like me).

I understand and appreciate that Symphogear is like ridiculously yuri, but like... maybe it's just my lack of experience with the magical girl genre but it's *brutal* and also judging bt the first two episodes absurdly fond of tonal whiplash apparently?
