Countdown to the space program — Apollo 17 Lunar Rover
Join us on Thursday at noon (or watch on Ustream at www.ustream.tv/usnationalarchives) to learn more about the American space program as it developed under Presidents Nixon and Ford, including the Apollo missions to the Moon, the decision to develop the space shuttle, and the 1975 Apollo–Soyuz test project.
The event is free at the National Archives in Washington, D.C

ABC press badge for the launch of STS-7, as seen on eBay.
STS-7 featured the first American woman in space, Sally Ride. The designers of the badge took note of this fact, as shown by the symbols surrounding the shuttle.

Absolutely beautiful.
The Station Solar Arrays serve a vital function, but also make a lovely mosaic when aligned in concert with the sun.

10 years ago today, I was on top of a slide at my elementary school in Merritt Island, watching Columbia launch for the last time. Two weeks later, a dark cloud fell upon the Space Coast, one that would not lift for another two years. This was one of the most life-changing experiences I have ever gone through. Godspeed the crew of STS-107, and Hail Columbia!

Wow.
A space suit floats freely away from the International Space Station in a scene reminiscent of a sci-fi movie. But this time, no investigation is needed. The suit is actually the world’s latest satellite and was launched on Feb. 3, 2006. Dubbed SuitSat-1, the unneeded Russian Orlan spacesuit filled mostly with old clothes was fitted with a radio transmitter and released to orbit the Earth.
