FINAL EDIT - I chose this edit because the effects and different layers work really well together.  The transparency of each layer relates back to my collages through the content plus aesthetical use of various shape and colours.  I also layered two of the Mbira sounds on top of one another as I couldn’t decide which one to use, but using both fits in with my continuous theme of layering that is apparent in the collages and film.

GRADED UNIT - RITUAL & COMMEMORATION
A comparison and contrast between African tribal beauty rituals and my own beauty rituals. I used this project as a way of highlighting my disconnect with being half African and interjecting myself into these images/videos of women in Africa as a way to relate myself to my heritage. I began by looking at my beauty rituals and found it interesting that these tasks are seen as mundane/uninteresting within the western world whereas in Africa applying body paint for example has major significance to tribes. I wanted to give these daily tasks a substance hence the use of stained glass windows - normally reserved for important religious figures by placing myself (screenshots from the videos of me undertaking rituals) and the African people I gave the rituals value. The film added another aspect of this theme where I could focus in on the actual rituals which again, gives them an importance. The videos laid on top of one another keeps in line with the presentation of my collages while also hiding/revealing the rituals - a technique I used so that it looked like I was linked to the African beauty rituals in the background.

Gilbert & George
Really interesting portrayal of a contemporary stained glass windows. Has clear sexual connotations that contrast with the religious nature of the works.  The use of colour resembles pop art too.

happy with this edit, playing around with visibility and layers and shapes to relate more to collage and ritual and the stained glass windows

working with shapes on top of shapes, going to change the nail video to one that is better and lighter so it is more visible and works more with the other videos. i was worried about the videos being too dark and not as visible so this will help with that
