I think extremism is never a good thing. Working in this industry, I believe that organic food is better for you. I believe that organic skin care, natural cosmetics and non-toxic cleaning products are a better option for both people and the environment. But I also believe you can have too much of a good thing. Extremism, even when it comes to things that are good for you, can be a bad thing. Years ago a friend went on a health kick and started drinking carrot juice every day. Eventually her skin turned yellow – a sure sign that she had consumed more carrot juice than her body needed. While I believe in natural things, I acknowledge that not everything chemical or synthetic is bad for you. A skincare ingredient produced in a lab is not necessarily harmful. It may be based on natural compounds and producing it in a lab ensures its purity and stability. Similarly, not everything natural is healthy or harmless. Arsenic is toxic. Certain mushrooms found in nature can be deadly if consumed. You get the idea. The point I’m trying to make is this: nothing in life is black and white. There will always be grey areas. Which brings me to COVID-19 and the extremist views surrounding it. How can anyone who has witnessed the devastating effects of Coronavirus overseas not take it seriously? Perhaps they believe in survival of the fittest and to hell with everyone else, including the elderly or people with underlying health conditions. Do they not have older parents, grandparents, neighbours or friends with health issues? Are they so uncaring of the vulnerable in our population? Are those people expendable to them? We have also seen examples of younger, healthy people struck down by this disease. As I said above, I believe wholeheartedly in the benefits of natural and organic products and a healthy lifestyle. But, regardless of their personal beliefs, the selfish actions of some people in our industry, their protests and refusal to follow mandated health regulations, only serve to support the view held by some that these people are absolute ‘nutters’.
