Keep on whispering in my ear Tell me all the things that I wanna’ to hear, ‘cause that’s true, that’s what I like about you

“Stop over. I’d like to take a picture!” Juvia hit him on the shoulders. She was unusually excited about the ad considering how she ‘dead-pan’ called him 'that guy from the billboard’ the first time they met. “It’s the same as the one near the studio.”
Of course they were talking about that sport-drink billboard where he was wearing nothing but his aztec bandana and his full six-packs.
“C'mon, Juvia.” He whined, not really on-board with his girlfriend’s idea. “If you really want a picture of my abs I got it right here.” Gray said. One hand was on the steering wheel while the other slowly pulled the hem of his shirt upwards, teasing a little of that six pack he was talking about.
Juvia laughed dryly.
“Just stop over.”
Then, Juvia did the most 'tourist’ thing to do: posed and took photos with Gray’s sport-drink billboard in the background. She roped her boyfriend in and forced the poor guy to pose in front of his million-dollar deal.
“Just so you know, not everyone gets to score something like that.” Gray tried to save face as the ballerina had her phone out to take photos of Hoopster.
“Whatever. Just go pose in front of well… you.”
Gray could see Juvia folding her lips and fighting a laugh but that was one hell of good-looking abs right there and he should be proud of it.

Gray Fullbuster, Juvia Lockser  Genre: Multi-chapter, Romance, Comedy Rating: M for sensitive Language and Content
I love the look on your face when you first see me The way that you laugh at the silliest things There’s a million more, these are just a few Of the many reasons I love you
- The Way You Smile, NewSong
The sun was still high but the fresh air in Isvan felt good on the skin. The breeze slapped on his exposed skin and kept him awake despite the long, quiet drive. Gray threw a glance at his girlfriend by his side, still soundly asleep. He felt bad for her missing the view. Gray contemplated waking her up but he decided against it, thinking she needed the rest. Besides, the drive back would give her a second chance at the view. For the meantime, he’d let her catch up with her sleep. He pulled her hand gently, careful not to wake her up, and pressed a soft peck on her knuckles.
The Lamborghini crossed the border that separated Gray’s hometown from the great City of Magnolia. Isvan used to be a third-rate municipality, surrounded by medium cost housing and rough road. Not until Gray’s success in the city, no one would have even heard of Isvan. The town was gradually developed in recent years. Today, Isvan was lined with fancy concrete houses and elaborate landscaping to go with them.
Gray could already recognize his neighborhood but his mother’s house was still at the other end of that exclusive suburban village. When he reached the last white-fenced house, Mr. and Mrs. Connell’s, Gray turned the curb into an asphalt road lined by coconut trees at either side. At the end of that road was the black, decorated gate that led to President Wakaba and Mika Mine’s mansion.
The guards on post greeted their master Gray and opened the gate to let the Ghini into the compound. Gray pulled up right in front of the mansion’s main entrance, snorting at the ridiculous fountain across the house. That wasn’t there before.
President, his step-father, the fur wearing Wakaba Mine, did a good job renovating the old bungalow his family used to own. He couldn’t even recognize anything from his old home, like he just replaced the entire thing. But the mansion reflected the President’s style – extra and flamboyant.

Things Juvia Has Done For Gray
Two important factors of the Gruvia relationship are how Gray and Juvia always go above and beyond in order to protect the other, and how they have changed each other’s lives for the better.
I feel like Mashima is constantly showing us how Gray and Juvia affect each other. And while we’ve known from the start why Juvia wants and needs Gray, and seen the lengths he’s gone to in order to keep her safe, we’ve also received many reasons why Juvia has had a positive effect on Gray’s life. And as the series has gone on, this effect that Juvia has on Gray has become even more impactful, personal and tremendously important to his emotional wellbeing.
So, this post is a companion piece to Rie’s awesome Gray post, and will focus on what Juvia has done for Gray (both intentionally and unintentionally), as well as how she has helped him during the time that they have known each other.

Mashima's writing, Gray, & the relevance of the "rejection" scene
Because I woke up to a maelstrom of doubt, antis, and people slamming Gruvia shippers on the Gruvia mobile tag, I feel the need to talk about Gray and Juvia’s relationship in the perspective of Mashima’s writing.
First of all, Gray is a fictional character. This seems like a pretty obvious statement and nobody is going to fight me on it; however, people seem to always forget this when they’re discussing gruvia and having the “but Gray said…!” and “but Gray did…!” argument.
Yes, Gray did reject Juvia’s confession.
Yes, Gray did say the “new version” of her was “creepy/crazy.”
Yes, Gray does look freaked out when Juvia fangirls over him.
It’s true. No one is denying this, I hope. It’s just how it is. It’s okay. And you know what? It’s the proper response that an emotionally closed off individual would give. It’s in character, which happens to be exactly why Gruvia shippers shouldn’t be worried when Gray acts like this.
So after the “rejection” scene, as manga readers know, a few different scenes took place.
To start, we have Juvia confronting Gray about his moping when the guild returns to Magnolia and celebrates. He blows her off at first, of course. It’s Gray. He’s not going to talk to anyone about how he feels.
Tumblr media
Juvia is persistent, though, and she tells him he’s not being fair to the rest of the guild. He agrees, and smiles at her while remembering Ultear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene is important for a few reasons. The most compelling, I think, is that it allows Mashima to invalidate Gray’s earlier rejection. If Gray, blunt, coldly distant Gray, really meant his rejection, if he was really fed up with this girl talking to him, if he was really annoyed by her behavior, would he listen to her? Would he smile and respond positively, or would he snap at her? Wouldn’t he say something to the effect of, “I JUST shot you down, leave me alone”? His response says a lot about his feelings towards Juvia. He doesn’t want to snap at her. He cares about her. Not to beat a dead horse, but he just died for her. People still using the “Gray doesn’t care about Juvia” argument are just wrong. They’re denying canon facts. You don’t die for someone you see as your stalker or as an annoyance. This has been said so many times, but just as many times that argument has crept back into the fandom. And yes, I know caring for =/= romantically interested in. The point of this post is to address that.
To take it a step further as a Gruvia shipper, I personally feel that he would’ve snapped at anyone else that told him to cheer up, but I’m not going to fight anyone on that or defend it because it’s just my speculation. Anyway, I’m getting off topic, but Mashima put this scene in here for a reason. Ask yourself why he didn’t have Lucy or Wendy or Erza confront him about or even notice his mood, and you’ll see it.
Next, we have the infamous bread scene. I’m not going to totally deconstruct and analyze this scene, but it provides further reinforcement to the fact that Gray’s rejection was not to be taken as absolute. He is, at the very least, still humoring her, and Mira and Cana note that they’re still acting the same as they always have been.
Tumblr media
Nothing’s changed. So why does Mashima do this? To show Gruvia is still a possibility and that Gray’s rejection wasn’t genuine. Gray is even blushing when he eats the bread Juvia made him.
Tumblr media
Additionally, they’re pictured together a few chapters later. Mashima avoids having Gray enforce his own rejection.
Gray and Juvia are sent on a mission together, and as they’re returning to the guild we are gifted with the mother of all counter-rejection scenes: Gray takes Juvia’s hand and comforts her by saying “I’m with you.”
Tumblr media
This scene screams romance; not from Gray, but from Mashima. Consider the other possibilities for this scene:
They could have been in a magic car; those are a thing in the FT world. No body contact needed. She wouldn’t have had to hold on to his back. Just a platonic car ride.
Caravans are a thing, too.
Gray didn’t have to take Juvia’s hand.
Gray didn’t have to say “I’m here with you”. He could’ve been like “oh it’ll be okay it’s cool plantonic bro friend we’ll win”
He could’ve skipped this entire scene to begin with, Juvia’s foreshadowing be damned, or addressed in a less intimate way.
So why did he add it in the way he did? Because he wants us to look at Gray and Juvia romantically. No, really. That’s it. This scene screams romance. She’s practically hugging him from behind, something that can’t be accomplished by any other mode of transportation.
Tumblr media
She rests her head on his back. He takes her hand. He comforts her. If there’s another time when Gray comforts anyone else in the manga like this, then point me to the page because I can’t think of one. If Gray only cares about Juvia as a friend, why is this scene presented to so many the way it is, as romantic? The romance is all in Mashima’s decisions and the detail in this scene. And it’s okay to disagree with this. I just personally don’t see this scene being intended any other way.
Chapter 386 gives us another “hey, Gray cares about Juvia” moment. These little moments all add up for effect. Additionally, we see that Gray and Juvia have such a strong emotional bond that Juvia has a bad feeling when something happens to him. And maybe Gray does too, if you want to stretch it. Anyway, when Silver removes Gray from the rest of the group, Keith and Silver provide an avenue for Gray and Juvia to still be connected. Keith tells Juvia about Silver and Gray’s fight. Silver asks Juvia to kill him. Mashima chose to involve Juvia in this way in order to intertwine Juvia with Gray’s life and past even more, because again, he’s pushing her as his romantic interest, as he has been for 300ish chapters. Perhaps most telling of all is how Gray sees Juvia.
Tumblr media
He remembers her smiling and lovingly saying his name. There is a heart. He remembers her last. And no, I am not denying Ultear’s role in his life or her significance in this scene. Ultear is important. Hell, I love Ultear; however, I absolutely refuse to ignore the fact that, A) Juvia’s panel is the second biggest on this page (and Natsu’s is likely larger because his has two text bubbles), and B) Juvia is the last on this page. There’s a break between Ultear and everyone else’s panels, and I believe that indicated a lack of continuity. If you’re questioning my view on this, my justification is that he probably could’ve squeezed Ultear onto that page if he meant for them to all be considered together or put her on the next (note: I’m not going to lie; I’m still confused by Gray’s actions in this scene. He’s not even in the right stance for iced shell. I can’t tell if he was really about to cast iced shell or not, so I’m not getting into that. Anyone with an actual explanation can step into my inbox). Mashima’s choice of Juvia’s panel size coupled with its content scream “wow Gray loves this person and she’s possibly the most important to him”. This gives us some serious insight on how Gray really sees Juvia: not as creepy, scary, crazy, stalkerish, or annoying, but as a smiling girl that loves him. Mashima didn’t even recycle a panel for this, either. It’s brand new, and it’s how Gray views Juvia, something we hadn’t previously known for sure.
Silver asks Juvia if she’s “Gray’s woman”.
Tumblr media
Remember, he saw Gray during the GMG. Although he’s only shown watching Gray up to his fight with Rufus, he just found out his son wasn’t dead, and you can bet your ass he probably watched Gray the whole time, which means he saw Gray and Juvia’s unison raid. Like he does with most other characters that see Gray and Juvia together, Mashima has Silver make the assumption that they’re in a relationship, just in case the reader forgot they have a bit of a thing going on. And it’s just that obvious to the other characters. Also remember that hand holding isn’t necessary for a unison raid. Does Silver know this? I don’t know. Mashima knows we know this, so to comment on the unison raid from 322, why do you think he had them holding hands? Follow this with “why does an uninformed Silver think they’re holding hands?” and you’ll see Mashima’s intentions. We then have a conflicted Juvia killing Keith and consequently Silver, filling her with guilt that has yet to be resolved with Gray, and so we’re on FT’s 400th chapter.
Don’t even get me started on the extra chapters that come after the rejection scene. There is NO reason for Gray and Juvia to be in “Welcome Home, Frosch”, other than for Mashima to show us that they spend time alone together.
Tumblr media
The cover of “413 Days”, the gruvia special chapter, features the words “all that time spent tied along with ribbon- until now, I passed it all with you, and from here on I will too…”, words that seem to be distinctly alluding to the red string of fate and to two people spending their future together, on a chapter that is focused on Juvia and Gray… Last but not least, the content of “413 Days” itself and all its symbolic glory imply a unique romantic bond between the two, since Juvia’s efforts towards romance (eventually) turn out to get a positive reaction out of Gray.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, why did I just take so much time to write all of this out?
Well, I see a lot of shippers in doubt right now, and that kinda bums me out because I don’t think the rejection scene is meant to be taken seriously. I’m also really tired of seeing people view gruvia shippers as crazy and I feel like sticking up for them. We’re not just seeing things. Actually, we’re picking up the numerous hints Mashima is dropping. I literally just wrote over 1,000 words on his decisions and details in what he’s done with Gruvia and what it means. And you know what? I love Gray. I do. I think he’s an awesome character. I also think he’s nice enough to turn Juvia down kindly, seriously and privately, if and when he ever means it. I really think he’s lying when he’s cold towards Juvia. And I really, really think that because Mashima is writing Gruvia romantically and because he chooses to portray them romantically, Gray is full of tsundere bull anytime he says he isn’t into Juvia.
The tl;dr on this post is that we should be listening to Mashima, not Gray, when it comes to Gruvia, because ultimately, who is in charge of Gray’s decisions anyway? And to that effect, why on Earth would Mashima waste six years writing a fictional couple that isn’t even going to end up together? So, if you’re doubting because of the recent episode, don’t, and if you’re hating because of the recent episode, don’t. Everyone’s opinions are valid as long as you’re not being rude when you present yours.
