2015 Winter Workshop Schedule
Hello, sisters!
As you hopefully know by this point, Winter Workshop is next weekend and our theme this year is values-based leadership.
As sisters, we are all inherently leaders, whether it be in our bands, in our chapters, or even in non-sorority environments; however, just like no two sisters are alike, no two leaders are the same. Through the lens of values-based leadership, we hope to help you find your own reasons and potential for leading. Furthermore, we hope to give you the tools and knowledge to make the most of your own strengths and passions.
SCHEDULE
9:30 - 10:00 Registration
10:00 - 10:45 Introduction—Who You Are: The Importance of Value-Based Leadership
This will be an introduction that explains the concept of value-based leadership and how it relates to the sorority.
10:45 - 11:45 Where Your Values Lie: Harry Potter Workshop
This workshop will help sisters figure out where their priorities through discussion of the 8 and 5.
11:45 - 1:15 Lunch
1:30 - 2:00 How to Handle/Utilize Weaknesses
Sisters will have a short discussion on common weaknesses which will then transition into a workshop on how to overcome those weaknesses and harness them for success (and through teamwork).
2:00 - 2:45 The Importance of Teamwork— Dr. Dawn Farmer
This workshop will focus on how different types of teamwork exist together—how they work together and how they don’t.
2:45 - 3:30 Sisterhood Activity
This activity will serve as an energizer while also allowing sisters to socialize and discover their similarities and differences (including those about leadership).
3:30 - 4:15 Following Your Ideals Wherever They May Lead You in Tau Beta Sigma
Sisters will discuss how to put the skills they’ve learned into practice through specific sorority examples.
4:15 - 5:00 District Office Q & A
Sisters will have the chance to anonymously ask the district council questions about being an officer. This workshop will be of special interest to those interested in running for office.
5:00 - 5:30 Wrap-Up
Be sure to check out the district website for more information, including a packet with directions, housing info, and more!
Have any questions? Email me at [email protected].
Hope to see you next weekend!
—Kelly

Reflections (Not the Song from Mulan)
Sisters,
I know you were hoping for a video of the council singing Disney songs, sorry to disappoint.
As the year draws to to a close I find myself reflecting upon my life, especially the last year. One of the biggest changes this year has to deal with my life in Tau Beta Sigma. Being elected Vice President of Membership for the North Central District has been the best thing that had happened to me this past year.
The road to running for district office was filled with contemplations about whether I should run for District office. As a freshman I had the chance to meet two district officers in my chapter, Jenny and Jackie. I saw how involved they were and recognized their passion for the organization. They were always asking me if I wanted to go to district events with them. Looking back I wish I would have gone with them, but as a membership candidate I was wondering "Where are these people trying to take me and what is this thing they call a 'block'?" I didn't get involved in the district until my first Fall Workshop. Through my experiences I saw how passionate each district officer was about the sorority and more specifically the “Nation's Classiest District.”
Their passion helped me to see that I could do more and serve the sorority on a completely different level. At the time I was thinking about also running for chapter president. I chatted about my options with fellow sisters, current district officers, and even past district officers. I heavily contemplated this before I decided that I actually wanted both. I had the confidence in myself that I could be both a district officer and chapter president.
My biggest fear was that I wouldn't be able to keep up with my school work and my grades would suffer. The result of having more responsibility increased my work ethic in school, it made me work harder.
I was also nervous about caucusing with other chapters. I didn't know if I would be able to handle the pressure of meeting with other chapters and sharing my confidence so that they too would be confident in my ability to be a district officer.
But looking back I know that this was the right move for me. I know that becoming a district officer was the absolute best thing to happen to me and I have learned so much in just 8 months. I encourage every sister that is considering running to for district office to do the following three things:
1. Talk to the members in your chapter.
2. Talk to current district officers, all of them. (We love talking with people across across the district!)
3. Talk to your Sponsor and Director of Bands.
Doing these three things will help you to decide whether being a district officer is right for you.
MLITB.
