Discussion around social media
What do you do on social media? I use every single app that a regular 20 something lady would have on their phone, from Facebook to Instagram, depop to Pinterest, tinder to bumble, whatsapp to Spotify and the amount of photo and video apps are too much to list. I use social media in so many aspects of my life. To keeping in contact with friends constantly, tagging them in memes and saying miss you after a coffee date the list goes on. I do rely on it to keep me up to date with news especially with the industry I work in being film & tv I need to be on top of the worlds movements and events, as well as my hobby being writing I constantly am reading on my phone articles magazines and typing up inspiration when I'm on the go. What is the best thing you've done on social media? thanks to social media I have been able to get into contact with numerous creatives that I would dream of working with! A few months ago I Instagram messaged a magazine editor asking if I could do some writing for the magazine, she said yes and after hard work of attending festivals for free and live gigs I finally got my first piece published on real printed paper! It was a amazing experience and has boosted my self esteem in every aspect of my life!

Social media

In School when I was in year 9, I got my first phone… The brilliant motorola flip in hot pink. Although it was nearly used back then to send songs and pictures via bluetooth and to get snaps in the schoolyard, it was my first real taste of technology.
That year being 2009, I shortly dove into the world of social media, ah what a time to be alive! With the likes of Myspace, MSN Messenger and good old Bebo! Being honest, I was really tech savvy, nor understood the main purpose of the world wide web until I started blogging on a daily basis and technology influenced all of us more year by year.
A few years passed and technology changed as much as I did, from the drastic alterations of top friends and playlist on your myspace profile, Facebook begun taking over in early 2011. It was so much more instant, messages back and forth, becoming friends with someone instantly. Mind blowing stuff right there!
Then in 2012, came the holy grail of social media…. Instagram. I was and yes still am constantly on the app, ensuring whatever I do or wherever I am people are notified. Alongside upgrading to Facebook I was introduced to the iphone, which since then, has been the main new communication technology in my life!
So heres the thing, growing up when I did, it was almost impossible to not keep up with the New Communication Technologies. When the trends changed online, you changed with them. Your group of friends or social circle became reliant on social media. Photos, events and even study was all based on New Communication Technologies. It became harder and harder to not keep in touch that way and that way only.
Lets talk about privacy, whilst studying fashion in Sydney, and a starting a blog back in 2013, I have learnt a fair bit about online privacy and security. Anything you even search on your phone from outfits to buy to random questions you ask google, Facebook finds out! I know this as its happened to me and a Facebook advert popped up with the same product you have searched for or the website offers!
i would never put anything online that would influence job offers, future employers or family. I just think that theres a big chance it’ll come back to bite you one day if you don’t think before you click upload!

I would say that over 80% of users I follow online I haven’t met in real life, mostly mutual friends or people I know of from the fashion and music industry. I honestly have seen people I haven’t met in real life and follow online, and go and say hello to! I usually say how we have mutual friends and can say I have a bunch of very good friends due to meeting online! The differences are that the people I have met online are usually based around mutual interests and can hold a conversation more compared to a old friend from high school whom I have had on Facebook for 6 years… I would see them in real life and say how have you been and conversation would be over before it begun!

I do often wish I grew up 30 years ago, when there was no such thing as not getting a text back or him/her liking another persons profile picture. I envy most older generations for that reason. If they wanted to see a friend they would turn up at their house or workplace, no social media posts to let everyone know what/who/where/why they are doing things; just plain and simple the way I like it.

Is it a positive or negative thing in our life's?
I think that social media and technology has made all our life’s easier but a large aspect that has grown is laziness and loss of independence. Gone are the days where you search for a street sign or even a house number to ensure you are at the right address, your phone or gps tells you this already; nor do you need to send invites in the mail to friends and family to get together and celebrate a occasion, it’s organised by a click of a button on Facebook. Going shopping or need inspiration for outfits and decor? Just click away on Pinterest and hey presto add the items to your cart via depop. Human communication is slowly fading away, contact in real life is rare as a conversation without staring at one another’s phones during dinner. It’s a hard balance to maintain, to keep in the know but to keep the real life communication present. You want to constantly be updated by people’s movements that they post online, but sometimes it’s so nice to hear the news from another persons mouth, seeing their reactions their smiles and emotion whilst telling a story or exciting news! Not a photo with a 50 word caption and a few emojis.
How do we keep a balance in this technology reliant society? Without falling behind or feeling left out?
This is a question I ask myself every week or so, and to be honest I think it’s a battle you will end up sadly losing because you will probably have a question you need to ask so you google it on your phone.

Video
youtube
Embed video on my blog. This video has made me put down my phone this morning, it made me really sit down and think that we never show anyone online what we don’t want them to see. The bad days, the fat days or the days you just don’t want to leave the house, instead we show our favourite angle, our favourite holiday snaps and the best of days basically.

Survey monkey
Below is the survey i put together via survey monkey!
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/T86ZXMV
The results showed that overall social media takes up a high percentage of our time and has become a big component of our lifestyle. My research within friendship groups, work colleges and friends online showed me that people use social media to stay in touch with friends, keep up to date with events and whats happening in the world and to overall communicate with the world! I found a few people that do not make social media or any platforms of the matter a main priority in their life, but still are frequently on them! I can speak on behalf of myself when I say its a part of my day to day routine, I check my Facebook (all social media feeds really) like its the morning paper with my cup of coffee before work or uni. Its the reality of the new communications world we live in and if you don’t keep up with its ever-changing ways life becomes difficult!
