DEAR DIARY, IT’S NOEUL

CIRCA:: SUMMER OF 2016 FEATURING:: BYUN NOEUL APPEARANCES BY:: JUNG JAEHYUN . LEE HAECHAN WORD COUNT:: 835 SUMMARY:: Silence often hurts more than words ever could

A bead of sweat dripped onto the darkened phone screen, triggering the device to light up and display an empty lock screen. 

Noeul quickly typed in her password before frantically checking her chat and call logs for the thousandth time since her debut was first announced to the public.

And just like every time before, the message she was looking for was nowhere to be found. 

No missed call. No voicemail. No text message. Not even an email. 

Noeul wanted to throw up.

She wanted to kick and scream and cry and just let every bit of pent-up emotion out. Instead, she turned her phone off, shoved it into her bag and took three deep breaths.

One Two Three

All of a sudden there was a hand on her shoulder and the bubble she was in popped. Her eyes adjusted to how bright the room had become while the chatter and laughter of staff members and the boys flooded into her ears.

She whipped her head around to come face to face with their maknae. “Noona?” Haechan’s worried eyes shifted as they searched Noeul’s face, looking for something he couldn’t quite place. “I’ve been trying to get your attention for a bit. The stylists need you to change so we can leave soon.”

Noeul let his words sink in for a second before looking away from him to scan the room. She made eye contact with her stylist, the older woman raising her brow in question of the younger's actions. Noeul shook her off before returning her attention to the boy in front of her. “Okay. Alright. I’ll head to the bathroom and change.”

Haechan nodded and gave her a soft smile before walking over to where Mark was sat on the couch. Her gaze followed him for a few seconds before they found their way back to the pocket of her bag where her phone lay dormant. Her fingers flexed at her side, the urge to check her notifications one more time tried to push its way to the surface. 

Pivoting to the right, Noeul snatched her street clothes off of the dressing table and squeezed her way out of the room, bowing and nodding to everybody on her way. Once she hears the door click shut behind her, she takes another three deep breaths.

One Two Three

Stepping out of the bathroom a few minutes later, Noeul hands her neatly folded stage outfit over to her stylist with a polite nod and bow before making her way back to their waiting room.  

Jaehyun leans against the door, his phone in one hand and Noeul’s bag in the other as he waits for her to come back. When he hears her footsteps approaching he lifts his head and offers the younger girl a gentle smile as he holds her bag out for her. “The others are already waiting in the vans, come on.”

Noeul stares blankly at him for a beat before taking her bag with a slight head nod. She starts their walk a step behind Jaehyun but is quickly pulled into his side when he slings an arm around her shoulder. She begins to pull away but the feeling of his hand squeezing her shoulder stops her and she decides to settle into his touch instead.

The pair walk in silence all the way to the remaining company van, the other one most likely halfway back to their dorm by now. Jaehyun finally releases his grip on Noeul to open the door for them, ushering her inside with a swift hand movement.

Noeul climbs her way past Yuta and Winwin to the back seat, plopping down with a heavy sigh as Jaehyun follows suit. As soon the van begins to drive at a steady speed, Noeul feels the exhaustion from their schedules take over as her eyelids grow heavy.

Watching her fight off sleep, Jaehyun gently places Noeul’s head on his shoulder before resting his on top of hers. 

“They’ll reach out to you soon,” his voice is barely audible to Noeul as she finally allows herself to succumb to her exhaustion. “You’re their daughter at the end of the day whether they like it or not. So don’t stress over it too much Elle.”

She wants to believe his words she really does, but deep inside she knows that it’s never going to happen. Her parents aren’t the type to ever back down from keeping their word, especially when their honor is involved, and Noeul knows that this specifically is one battle with them she will never win.

But instead of telling her new family that, she chooses to dream of the fairytale of her perfect life.

She dreams of parents who never fail to show up to her most important events. She dreams of parents who support her and her dreams. She dreams of parents who make the effort to at least send a congratulatory message. She dreams of parents who didn’t take away her right to call them that.

　　　　ೃ⁀➷ LILI is a member of the south-korean fictional unlimited member concept co-ed group NCT under SM ENTERTAINMENT. she made her debut on january 17th, 2019 in WAYV with the song REGULAR. she was introduced as a SM Rookie on july 17th, 2018 alongside her groupmates Hendery, Yangyang and Xiaojun. she made her second debut in NCT U on november 23rd, 2020 with 90s LOVE, and then debuted in NCT XLIGHT as the current last member in late 2021.
