MAKING JACK DANIEL’S MUSIC HISTORY AT THE JD ON STAGE CEBU SCOUTING GIG
Cebu’s longtime landmark for local independent music bands and music rogues alike, The Outpost in Lahug, Cebu City, saw a standing room capacity on a Friday night last January 24, as Jack Daniel’s and crew brought to life the Cebu and final leg of the JD On Stage Scouting Gig Tour.

Following the same campaign mechanics with a slight twist, Jack On Stage tapped into 5 of the most prominent local independent music gig productions of Metro Cebu to recommend the city’s most happening bands today. From which Jack Daniel’s will observe and identify their chosen delegate that will be sent to perform at the major events in Manila and likewise proceed to the succeeding rounds of the JD On Stage campaign and possibly the next Jack’s Chosen One. These chosen grassroots communities of gig productions groups are Skinny Buddha, Escape Artist, Rocket One, Crazymonkey and Ricubus.
As the night was lead to open by JD On Stage inhouse show host Roanna Ruiz of Jam 88.3, the Cebu Scouting Gig kicked off an upbeat of sound, showmanship and spunk from the first band recommended by Rocket One Productions – Gestalt. Whose energy was clearly sustained by the second act boasting with audio know-how and powerful female vocals from the band Neverending Weekend, the only recommended artist by veteran Cebu prod group, Skinny Buddha.
Claiming a good hour on stage were the remaining recommended artists from Rocket One Productions: Drop Out Club and Dymphna who rocked it like they meant it. Lashing out their own brand of new school rock and sunshine were the Ricubus Productions’ recommendations— Foc Fashion. Escape Artist Productions and their best bets Shuffled and The Line Divides consecutively churned out serious youthful guitar riffs and vocal melodies as gig goers in the crowd clamored for more with their Jack mix drinks in hand courtesy of the Friends of Jack segment. And finally, Crazymonkey Productions’ released their secret weapon of a live act S.T.I.F.
Sifting out for the finest on-the-brink band of the evening was just too tight a task as each recommended artists that performed all proved an excellent show set after set. Jack Daniel’s and the JD On Stage had then finally lowered down the curtains on its first phase of the campaign with a bang, a full house capacity of true blue music lovers and players old and new, and a treasure trove of listening pleasure worthy of making the move to open its doors in Metro Cebu and create a memorable event in Jack Daniel’s history.

On October 25, 2013 in Saguijo Makati, Jack On Stage embarks on its first phase in the program that is the Scouting Gigs Tour. With the first leg hosted by Revolver Productions, headed by its captain Cris Ramos, Revolver is an offshoot of the weekly music reviews column in the Life & Times section of the Saturday edition of the Manila Times newspaper, which in turn was named after one of The Beatles’ best albums. Inspired by notable electronic music icon Moby and his music festival Area One, and local music productions such as Admit One and Play4serve, Revolver aims to bring an eclectic and dynamic line up of performers under one roof every month.
Performing in the 1st Scouting Gig are Revolver’s highly recommended independent bands: husband and wife rock electronica duo Turbo Goth, young and soulful solo artist Earl, indie electropop twosome Moonwlk, fierce female fronted and funk souled Soulpage, pop soft metal core Mad Hatter Day, pop rock slowcore December Avenue, and indie fuzz rock Identikit.

ARE YOU ‘IN’?

This is a story of independence, integrity, and authenticity. Unbeknownst to most, in the 1800's, Mr. Jack Daniel himself started a movement that hundreds of years later, is still practiced and proves to be the catalyst of some of the best musical collaborations.
1866, saw the birth of the Jack Daniel's Distillery which soon turned into the best, if not the only, Tennessee whiskey in the entire world. He also began the oldest recorded music sponsorship when he and his band, The Silver Cornet Band, started playing at his saloons that were serving Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. Ever the supporter of independent music, Jack Daniel's continues its reign to showcase the best music from all corners of the world.
Being a musician himself, Mr. Jack never lost sight of the talent behind each musician and always acknowledged that a lot of the talent came from independent artists. Hundreds of years later, Jack Daniel's in the Philippines and around the world continues that support by launching localized music programs that support independent music. This year, Jack Daniel’s Philippines celebrates independent music with the “Jack On Stage”.
Now on its 3rd Philippine tour, Jack Daniel's has changed the pace and came up with another unique celebration of Filipino independent music. Jack Daniel’s Philippines has been successfully sending local Philippine talent across the region for the past six 6 years.
In 2007, the Jack Daniel’s Global Music Program locally tagged the Jack Mix Collaborations, saw Nyko Maca + Playground, together with Cynthia Alexander, representing the Philippines at the regional concert held in Hard Rock Singapore.
In 2009, an adaptation of the original U.K. based "The JD Set" was launched, and saw loads of independent artists vying for the top spot, which was successfully conquered last March 2013 by Mr. Bones and the Boneyard Circus, who went on to representing the Philippines at the Jack Daniel’s regional held in Cambodia.

This year, with Jack Daniel’s On Stage, the Philippines will bear witness to the independent artists who are making the most waves through their creative ways of playing their music be it through their authentic compositions.
Jack Daniel’s On Stage is the new music program that will once again showcase the magic of the independent artist. Beginning the tour with the aptly named “Scouting Gigs” where 6 independent production groups will highlight 7 different independent bands each, Jack starts anew the search for the ONE that will represent the Philippines at yet another Jack Daniel’s regional event abroad in 2015, and offers their hand in either producing or marketing the chosen band’s full album.
By tapping into this “grassroots approach” of locating the best of the best, Jack Daniel’s is proud to be working alongside these communities who truly keep the music in the Philippines alive and kicking.
Also new to Jack Daniel’s On Stage will be the incorporation of one of the Philippines' top music breeding factories, Cebu City. Wherein, a Cebu based band will also be sent to Manila where the major events of the Jack Daniel’s On Stage will be happening.
Indeed there is something new with Old No. 7 that may stir up noise for the independent musician and Jack invites all avid music fans to get involved. Let’s support music for the INdependent Spirit that is fueled by passion, authenticity and supported with integrity.
So we dare to ask…. ARE YOU ‘IN’?

MaharLikha: A Celebration of Creative Freedom
As a way of celebrating the talents of its roster of artists, music portal NDFY.me formally launches its website in a two-stage concert on June 11, 2013 at B-Side The Collective, in Makati City.
Dubbed "MaharLikha" (a play on the word Maharlika, an elite class of Filipinos with power, and Likha, or to create/creation), the event will feature 24 bands, from all over the country, who have signed up for NDFY. The bands were chosen by an independent panel of music bloggers/media practitioners: Ian Urrutia of vandalsonthewall.blogspot.com and Ren Aguila, contributing writer of pindiemusic.com.

“NDFY is more than a portal that streams independent Filipino music. We're a collective of musicians and listeners, who love the local music scene" says Glen Macadaeg, Metronome (i.e. CEO) of NDFY. "More importantly, we're a movement that aims to bridge the gap between listeners who constantly search for new Filipino music, and artists who want to widen their audience beyond their geographical boundaries."
NDFY (pronounced “in-die-fy”) started in 2011 when Glen, a music aficionado and marketing practitioner in the FMCG industry, and his brother Gep, a seasoned musician and marketer, wanted to open more windows of opportunities for musicians, regardless of genre. They invited other friends of different professional backgrounds to join the team and pitch in their knowledge and talent in developing NDFY.
The website went on beta test last December of 2012 and as of May 20, 2013, has included more than 120+ artists of various genres in its roster. And since then has had an average of 20,000 page visits per month – helping the artists find new fans which can be attested by new music discoveries of listeners, as shared on social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
"The event is more than about NDFY; it’s about the independent Filipino artist who continues to produce original music despite the current circumstance of the industry. #NDFYLive: MaharLikha is to celebrate our independent Filipino artists’ creative freedom – they are an elite class of Filipinos who deserve to be heard and respected, given their creative contributions to the Filipino culture,” concludes Macadaeg.
[Check out the event details here: http://bit.ly/NDFYLiveMaharlikHa]
#NDFYLive: MaharLikha will happen this June 11, 2013 at B-Side. The event is in cooperation with Doc Def Productions, with special thanks to the following brand partners: Dupe, HeyGarch.com, Lyric Piano, Moonleaf, and Timbre Headphones, and media partners: Bootleg-Radio.com, Muni.ph, Pindiemusic.com, RadioRepublic.ph, Webgeek.ph, VandalsOnTheWall.com, WhenInManila.Com, and YabangPinoy.com.

Awesome Week-NDFY Hackathon
Super busy and productive weekend for the NDFY.me team!
Apart from small tweaks here and there, here are the three major site improvements the team accomplished over the weekend:
Landing Page Looks awesome right?

Thanks to tide/edit for letting us use their photo!
Facebook Connect On the site's landing page, people can now express their support for the movement by signing-up via their Facebook accounts. (We invite everyone who use the site to use this feature, and express their support for the movement!)
Embed Links As requested by Ian Urrutia of Vandals On The Wall and Bel Certeza of Pindiemusic.com, all tracks uploaded on NDFY.me can now be embedded on blogs and websites, like so:
The link to the track player can be accessed by clicking the 'lightning bolt' beside the play button that both appear as the mouse cursor hovers over each track. This is an awesome development as we continue to develop the "eco-system" we want our independent Filipino musicians to thrive in.
So there. If you have comments or suggestions, please feel free to email us via [email protected].
Watch out for more site improvements soon!
Go forth and Indiefy!

NDFY-ned: NDFY Defined
Revolution Records? Guerrilla Records? Spark Music? Pedal Music? Volumedia?
And then it hit me, "Indiefy."
The name came after we pitched to our tech consultant, bro-grammer extraordinaire , Andrei Navarro, the idea of coming up with a website (and other tools) to help empower independent OPM artists.
At the onset of our idea generation, we've always wanted this to be a cultural movement to spark another deluge of OPM artists, similar to what we experienced during the 90's. And being a movement, I wanted a name that connotes a dynamic process. I wanted a brand name that sounds like, and can be used as a verb.
And thus, we settled with "Indiefy."
Indiefy is, in a way, a combination of 2 words:
Independent - since our goal is to empower the independent OPM artist, we used a word, or better yet, the spirit, that they can most surely identify with.
Defy - given the current state of our music scene, the movement is an act of defiance to what is currently being fed to us. A challenge to break the old "rules," given the new web-enabled era we are in.
Indiefy, then, is a verb which means:
"to create independent music independent from old rules"
Similar to Aramaic and Arabic text, we then shortened the verb by removing all the vowels, and came up with NDFY. This made the verb "subjective," depending on the user's context (ex: "bg" can be "bag," "beg," "big," "bog," or "bug," depending on the context or the words before and after the word) - the way music is subjective, depending on the listener's context.
Cool, isn't it? :)
Now that you know...
Go forth and Indiefy,
Glen Macadaeg NDFY.me - Metronome
