I wish I could wrap 8-years-younger Anna up in a hug and whisper to her what we know now:

- We finished the PhD in just 4 years and kicked butt the whole time. Multiple first author papers, invited talks, and awards. And just before defending, we found an excellent job that we love as a researcher in industry!

- We eventually learned to love Missouri and made wonderful friends, and it was bittersweet to move away in the end. But now we live in a town in upstate New York that we love even more, and we made so many great new friends, and even joined a ceramics studio in town!

- That boyfriend is our husband now! We made long distance work for 5 years, and when we finished grad school we moved to NY together. We ran down to the courthouse in December 2023 and had a big beautiful wedding with all our friends and family in November 2024.

- Sometimes life is so good and we're so happy that we get weepy with joy! It's all gonna turn out great babe!

So I don’t think a ton of people pay attention to me on here, so I’m gonna use it for a mini-vent real quick. I’m starting a PhD program in ceramic engineering at a small state school in Missouri. As a result, I’ve moved hundreds of miles away from my loved ones. There are ups and downs. Ups: I have a whole two bedroom apartment to myself, and will be saving money the whole time I’m here. My program and my advisors are excellent, and I’m going to get a great education that’ll prepare me for a great job. Being alone will let me learn about myself and rely on myself and encourage me to better myself in the ways I’ve been trying to so far. The time for me to be an adult has come and I feel up to the challenge. Downs: This tiny town is an educated, cultured, moderate enclave compared to the surrounding region, and it’s still the most conservative place I’ve ever lived. For all that being alone and throwing myself into the deep end now while I’m in my early 20’s will do me good, it’s also terrifying and hard. My family is so far away. My boyfriend, with whom I’ve had the best relationship of my life, is going to a grad school 7 hours from mine and it’s going to be brutal. I don’t even know for sure yet if I’ll like my program or if I’ll do well in it. I just moved here. My apartment is a mess and I’ve just cried myself out because boyfriend left and we don’t know when we’ll see each other again. I can handle anything, but that doesn’t mean that this isn’t going to suck for a while.
