Hey, I was wondering what exactly astral travel is, it seems to be in my feed a whole heap at the moment. So naturally my curiosity got the better of me. Thanks a heap! xx
I don’t have time to type up a whole post on it right now, but essentially astral travel is where your consciousness is in two places at once. You aren’t fully there (like projection) but you are there enough to interact with the astral realms. This is often done through meditation/trance work.

it is so weird seeing homestuck fans that just blatantly admit to not wanting to engage with the text or think about the themes or anything that is being conveyed. personally i don't have a lot of experience with literary analysis and i absolutely do not consider myself to be an analysis poster or anything like that (and i'm absolutely aware that i don't always post "good takes") but i do genuinely love hearing what analysts (and i do mean actual analysts not just people who do explanations/interpretations (though there's nothing wrong with just sticking to that)) have to say about the story and what there is to take away from it and now ideas intersect and overlap and create value and meaning
i made a post over the summer saying something about how the fandom can feel like an infinitely ongoing discussion over the ideas and nuances in the text and someone commented "i know right, i hate it, i feel like we should just be able to have fun and do whatever we want" okay why don't you do that in your own corner. i'm trying to examine and learn about the story i like BECAUSE i like it! i want to better understand all of its intricacies and what makes it such a compelling story in the first place by reading what others have to say because i'd rather make a small effort than just not engage at all

All relief that the new pope is moderate as far as Catholics go (as opposed to some uberconservative reactionary) aside, missionary work is colonialist and genocidal. It doesn't matter how nice an individual missionary is, nor does it matter if they're also doing some kind of humanitarian work, the function of missionary work is to destroy other cultures and create Christian hegemony.

I’m not Jewish but asking to respectfully request verification since my knowledge on the subject is fuzzy. I’m aware Lilith is a class of demons that Jewish folks literally actively take steps to avoid and ward off but isn’t the whole myth surrounding her pretty problematic and non canonical ? Thanks in advance
So to address this properly I gotta talk a little about Rabbinic scholarly writing:
So the story about Lilith everyone knows is from something called a midrash. Midrashim are functionally just supplemental reading, traditionally written by rabbis to help explain discrepancies and unanswered questions in biblical texts. They are MANY and they can often contradict each other, since they're not "official" texts, just a scholarly take/interpretation of the question at hand. Naturally some midrashim are more popular than others. (One of my favorites involves Adam v'Chava originally being created with chitinous protective armor; aka humans were literally scaly bois until the fall from Eden and now our finger and toenails are all that's left. Tons of fun, but midrashim hardly serve as something definitive.)
The midrash of Lilith in Eden is one explanation of her origins, but certainly not the only thing written about her. That midrash comes from a work called the Alphabet of ben Sirach (wiki attached here, which actually includes a translation of the Lilith story in its entirety and discusses how modern Jewish scholars push for reinterpretation, since ben Sirach is largely considered a work of satire.) It was written in 700-1000 AD. If nothing else, this tells us people have been warding against Lilith for much longer than this particular story existed. Anti-Lilith incantation bowls have survived from before this time.
So with all this background info in mind: Is the midrash "problematic?" Well of course it's not going to reflect modern views about gender, it was written 1000-1300 years ago. How it's place in satire should influence our analysis is also worth discussing. Is it "non-canonical?" Well, yeah, it's from a midrash. But non-canonical isn't the same thing as non-Jewish.
Lilith was considered a hazardous figure in Jewish folklore long before that story was written and clearly endured afterwards. How that story got interpreted and spread by a largely-patriarchal world is worth talking about, but modern Jews who avoid her most likely aren't doing so just because of that one story. It's probably more because of everything else written about her and the fact our Ancestors have been actively warding her off for ~1500+ years.

The Morrigan Deity Guide
This is a re-do in the "deity deep dive" format of my original Morrigan post!
Tumblr media
Who is The Morrigan?
The Morrigan is the ancient Irish Triple, or tripartite, of war and death, but she is also goddess of sovereignty, the land, and prophecy.
The name Morrigan, or Morrigu, is the anglicized version of the Gaelic name Mór-Ríoghain, which means "Great Queen" in modern Irish.
The old name has been linked to the proto-indo-european word Mór (terror) and Ríoghain could relate to the Latin word Regina (queen). (Wiktionary)
It’s debated whether she is one deity with three aspects or if these three aspects are sisters that create a triple goddess.
If they are sisters, their names are likely Macha, Nemain, and The Morrigan, their collective title being The Morrigu or The Morrigna. (The spelling of these will differ throughout your research if you choose to do your own after this post)
Their names could also be Macha, Nemain, and Badb, though the name “Badb” may have been a title for spirits/gods who wrought havoc on the battlefields and incited terror in the opposing side. (See “The Ancient Irish Goddess of War” in references for more info).
Other names involved with these sisters are Anand and Fea.
It’s not unlikely that The Morrigan’s identity would change between the many different groups in Ireland throughout time.
Parents and Siblings
Her mother is Ernmas, father is unknown.
Siblings have included Ériu, Banba, and Fódla, who make up the triple goddess of spirit and sovereignty of Ireland.
As well as Gnim, Coscar, Fiacha, and Ollom, as her brothers.
Lovers or Partners
The Dagda, with whom her relationship is of great importance for the Irish holiday Samhain.
In lore, the Morrigan falls for Irish Hero Cú Chulainn but her feelings are not returned.
Children
Mechi, who has three hearts that each contain a serpent.
Epithets
The Goddess of Death
Morrígu
The Morrighan
The Great Queen
Phantom Queen
Badb-Catha
Nightmare Queen
The Washer at the Ford
Notes
Due to the many myths and legends surrounding The Morrigan and she is also associated with the Fae and the Banshee—a creature that generally takes on the form of an old woman who wails in mourning to announce the coming death of someone in the family.
The Morrigan is most notoriously a shape shifter and deity of magic.
In modern day paganism and witchcraft, some choose to worship The Morrigan as one deity with the sisters as aspects, others choose to worship her as a triple goddess consisting of three sisters. Neither of these can be said to be entirely right or wrong and vary from person to person, even from an academic point of view.
Though there are similar beings throughout Celtic mythology, The Morrigan is unique to Irish mythology.
Stories that prominently feature the Morrígan include Táin Bó Cúailgne (The Cattle Raid of Cooley), Cath Maige Tuired (The First and Second Battles of Moytura), and Lebor Gabála Érenn (The Book of the Taking of Ireland). (Mythopedia)
Fulacht na Mór Ríoghna (Cooking Pit of the Morrígan) in County Tipperary, and two hills in County Meath known as Da Cích na Morrígna (Two Breasts of the Morrígan) are both locations in Ireland linked to The Morrigan.
