It’s not that Haku has never been sick before, but he’s never stayed still long enough to really feel it. Now he can’t breathe through his nose and his whole body aches and there’s a low, throbbing heat that’s settled just behind his eyes.

“Zabuza-san, am I going to die?” he asks one night, after crawling into bed at the older boy’s side doesn’t alleviate his shivering.

Zabuza, who up until this point has been relatively stern and serious, actually laughs. “No, dipshit,” he says, with uncharacteristic warmth. He ruffles Haku’s newly-shorn hair. “You’re not going to die. But if you don’t shut up and get some sleep that might change.”

“I can’t sleep,” Haku whines without meaning to. “My face feels like it’s going to slide off.”

Zabuza sighs, but his heart isn’t in it. He sits up. “I’ll make you some tea, kid. Something to help you sleep.”

The tea is bitter and medicinal but Haku drinks it up greedily, letting the heat soothe his sore throat and warm the tips of his cold hands. He settles in against the warmth of Zabuza’s side once again and breathes deeply through his nose before the congestion returns.

Finally, the thing behind his eyes is not enough to keep him awake. He sleeps, and when he stirs briefly in the morning, Zabuza is still beside him, awake and taking stock of his condition. Haku is too young and too sick and too broken, but something like love blossoms in his chest then.

This gets deeply exhausting when you tell queer people how they can and cannot approach their own experiences and identities, and what is and is not an appropriate way to process those things in fiction.
