“Hey darling, what movie – ”

Doyoung words gets cut short as he emerges from the shower – only to find you missing from the shared master bedroom. His laser beam projector is still projecting a blue screen on the wall right in front of the bed and the remote control lies forgotten on the white covers of the shared bed. You were supposed to choose a movie for the two of you for movie night so where were you now?

Maybe she went outside to get snacks.

Towel in hand, he continues rubbing his wet hair as he steps out of the master bedroom in search of you. He spots you by the dining table, but his eyebrows furrow at the sight of your hunched figure over the dining table, clearly struggling with something in your hands. He moves closer to you but even then, you don’t notice him for you are much too engrossed with that mysterious item in your hand. Doyoung finally sees it now – a medicinal patch placed over your right wrist as you struggle to wrap it up in compression bandages. Bottom lip between your teeth with your glare fixed on the white bandage with intent, you twirl the bandage with your left hand as you try to keep the medicinal patch steady with the other – but to no avail. Either the medicinal patch keeps shifting from its position on your wrist, or the bandages come loose with corners sticking out from weird angles. It’s not neat enough for you, and you end up redoing the bandages again and again. When you’re satisfied with the way the bandages are done, there comes the next challenge – cutting the bandages. You struggle with the task because for some goddamned reason, the scissors just won’t cut through the thick material. The bandage keeps shifting on the table and makes a mess out of the entire area. A quick glance at the wall clock tells you that it’s been 15 minutes since you’ve been struggling to put on your bandages and by now, you’re perspiring slightly and getting frustrated. You let out an exasperated sigh and that’s when Doyoung snaps out of his stupor and marches over to help you.

“Here, let me help you.”

This morning of summer can almost be tasted.

It’s humid and dense, with a sense that reminds her of the dripping of popsicles. Most of the time, she likes a passion fruit popsicle—it has some taste and is a thousand times more refreshing than some general strawberry one, but the stickiness that clings to her fingertips in reminders of the sugar overload that will follow soon after brings some sense of guilt to the back of her brain. That, maybe, a juice would be more beneficial for an adult like her, or, in this case, with all the metaphors aside, that working at a candy store is quite clearly what anyone but a Willy Wonka enthusiast wants.

Though the heat outside the store is a thousand times more unbearable than what one would imagine. The streets are filled with people in ripped shorts, oversized t-shirts and enjoying the sweetest treats from them. Though, ice cream parlors may be working on the business with more efficiency than them. She takes interest, with one hand propped underneath her chin, for the one boy that did buy a lollipop from them and he has been dipping the dulcet treat into a cup of water. He takes a lick, dips it in water, and repeats. Her bets go on the fact that this child may end up drinking the water in about ten minutes, but that may be the boredom speaking.

How not to be bored when this place is so big, yet so unpacked? The shelves, locked and only opened by workers, showcase variety of sweets, some prepared by the workers, others simply bought. The yellow walls with white flooring only remind her of the intense cleaning that comes on Wednesdays and Saturdays for her, and it will only be more of a headache with the heat that is welcoming this summer. In a way, her mind tries to wrap around the idea that there is some purpose to this: to being a candy store worker, other than simply hating the smell of sweets now that she has been there for over a year.

To make money.

And maybe, feel functionable.

But this is not a lifetime worth of dreaming.

Walking out of Xiaojun’s bedroom, you stumble down the hallway and into the kitchen where your boyfriend is making tea over the stove. You rub your eyes and drag your feet to him, falling into his back and rubbing your forehead in-between his shoulder blades, your arms encircling his small waist. You squeeze him and he laughs at your sudden love attack, turning away from he stove to face you, still in your arms.

He gently cups your cheeks in his hands and leans in, rubbing his nose with yours a bit before pressing a soft kiss to your lips. Through the window, the sun is just rising and blue spills into the living room and over Xiaojun’s face. You lean into him again, this time nuzzling your face into his neck and pressing a soft kiss there.

“I can’t get over how a few months ago I wanted to learn your name and now you’re having breakfast with me in my sweater.” He laughs a bit at the end, tugging on the aforementioned piece of clothing.

“Please, I haven't even woken up all the way, how are you making me melt like this.” You sigh, pressing a few more kisses onto his skin wherever your lips could reach.

“What can I say, that’s what you do to me.”
