Theory: How does Eraserhead make his scarf float?

Oh, what? There’s a bunch of drama going on in the manga right now? Well forget that, let’s talk about the floaty scarf. People have probably come to similar conclusions as me, but I wanted to give my thoughts anyways.

(Real talk, the scarf-floating is probably just a visual thing to look cool, but whatever let’s ANALYZE)

~ Quick background on his quirk ~

Aizawa’s quirk is called Erasure. If he looks at someone (and activates his quirk) that person will lose the ability to activate their own quirk. The effect ends when he blinks, and the way people can tell when it’s activated is if his hair is standing on edge (although this doesn’t seem to be common knowledge within their world).

~ Quick background on his scarf ~

He describes it as “a capture weapon”, and it is apparently made of carbon fibres and a special metal alloy, making it very strong (Season 1, Episode 6). Other than that, it is unknown how exactly the user is supposed to control it. We know it is not a skill exclusive to Aizawa because he teaches the technique to Shinsou in the manga.

I bring this up because I’ve seen people theorize that Aizawa actually has a hybrid quirk, and he got telekinesis from some side of the family. People then assume he uses this telekinesis on his scarf to make it move. But the fact that others CAN learn to use the scarf means he is not using a telekinetic quirk to capture people, and anyone with ANY quirk could learn to use the capture weapon with enough practice. The scarf is not dependant on a person’s quirk.

~ A bit more about Shinsou ~

Before we go on to the floating, I wanted to quickly address Shinsou. From this panel, we see a little bit of floating, but it’s unclear if this is just part of the scarf being loosened for an attack, if he’s flinching away and causing it to move, or maybe the fact that Deku is pulling on it. I can’t remember if there’s any point where Shinou’s scarf full on floats, but either way, it’s nothing compared to the weird stuff we see happen with Aizawa.

~ Ok time to talk about the floating ~

How does THIS ^^ happen?

(An example of slightly less floating from Season 4 Episode 10. He’s not moving in this scene, so there’s no momentum that could be affecting it. So why is the scarf up? Even if part of it is unwound next to him, scarves don’t do that!)

Here’s the gif that let me finalize my theory…

This gif is incredibly telling, as it shows Aizawa… not really doing anything. There’s no jumping around, he doesn’t seem to be touching the scarf with his hands, he’s not using it as a capture weapon, it’s just doing that on its own. The only thing Aizawa is actually doing is activating his quirk.

But wait! Look a little closer near the end of the gif and you’ll realize that the scarf “settles” the same time his hair falls. This means his scarf’s floating is caused by his quirk.

“Wait but didn’t you say he wasn’t using his quirk to control it?” Why yes, hypothetical reader, I did say that. I said he’s not using a quirk to CAPTURE people, i.e. he’s not using a quirk to activate the capturing abilities. But the activation of his quirk is definitely connected as to why his scarf floats.

Now, my theory isn’t really based on anything besides… like… seeing it with my eyes and making a conclusion, but I believe that Aizawa’s quirk has a sort of side effect in it’s activation: making things near his head float. It’s pretty obvious that this happens with his hair, but I suggest the side effect also causes his scarf to float up. It has nothing to do with the scarf itself, it just happens to be something that’s always on him. We see other side effects in bnha, like Deku crackling lightning, and we already knew that a side effect for Aizawa caused his hair to float, so why not extend that to his scarf?

Going back to that theory about telekinesis, I think it’s possible that one of his parents DID have it, and it manifested in a weird side-effect of Erasure, but it’s also possible that this is just a thing that happened.

Someone on reddit put it very well in reference to his hair…

Exactly! A mini-antigravity on himself, it just happens to affect his hair AND his scarf.

TL;DR - When Aizawa activates his quirk it makes things near his head float, including his hair and scarf.
