Writing Your Own Spells
So when I first started my path, I knew I wanted to write my own spells. I got alot of inspiration from other blogs online, but I just felt silly saying things and such that I didn’t feel like was me. It wasn’t personal enough, especially since I was beginning this path on my own. I’ve been practicing for about six months now (by no means very long) but I was having trouble keeping track of all of the components of my spells. So I made a template for myself to keep myself organized when writing my spells, and I thought I’d share it with you all!
1. Spell Name As a beginner, keep it simple. You can number spells that have the same intents.
2. Goal/Intention These will get more specific as you go.
3. Timing Date & Time, Day of the Week, Lunar Phase. Personally, that’s what I follow. But you might want to add astrology aspects as well if you’re into that.
4. Ingredients This is where I was having a hard time of keeping organized. I divided this part into the following sections: - Candles - Incense/Smudge - Oils - Herbs, Flowers, Trees, etc - Crystals - Tarot Cards - Tea - Etc. (any magickal waters, flower essence, tinctures, inks, sigils, basically anything else you are incorporating into the spell)
5. Chants/Words I keep mine as short as possible so they’re easier to memorize.
6. Steps Start with setting up your supplies, casting a circle (if you do that), grounding and centering. Always have a closing (dismissing elements/deities, opening the circle, etc) as to not leave any unwanted energies just floating around.
7. Results Obviously you’re going to have to come back to this one after some time.
A few other things: - Read over your template a few times before performing the spell to avoid any loop holes or things you may have missed. - The ingredients section is where you’ll have the most freedom. You do you. Use things you have, don’t worry if you’re not incorporating Tarot or tea into your spells. Work with what is important in your craft. - Have fun! Hopefully this helps!

Tools for spellcasting
Courtesy of Simply Wicca by Leanna Greenaway
Altar
An essential base to work from. It’s important that your altar is your own; there are no set rules on this. A portable altar (simply placing a cloth on a hardwood floor) can be used when in the broom closet, or when traveling.
The Pentagram
A symbol known to protect the owner. Was frequently worn as an amulet to celebrate spiritual protection and a happy homecoming. The five points of the star represent protection and the five elements; earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, starting with the top point symbolizing earth and traveling clockwise. Placed on your altar, directly in the center, with the star facing you upright. Don’t forget to charge it!
Salt and water
The highest forms of protection. A small bowl of salt and water on either side of the pentagram will do.
Candles!
Pretty self-explanatory. A variety of colors work well, but white can always act as a substitute for the color you need in a spell.
Incense
Creates ambience for effective spellcasting. Burn for the duration of a spell.
The Chalice
Represents the element of water, and a symbol of fertility. In ancient times, it often corresponded to the womb of the goddess. The stand is symbolic of the maternal world, the stem represents the relationship between humanity and spirit, and the rim is thought to attract spiritual force.
The Cauldron
Used as a vessel for making infusions and potions. Good for burning herbs!
The Bell
A ritual tool used in banishment spells. Can be rung to indicate the start of a spell, clearing negativity, or repeatedly around the home to rid of unwanted vibrations. Can safeguard the home by dispelling evil spirits, or stir up good energies.
The Athame
A ritual knife. The traditional dagger usually has a black handle with a double-edged blade. Many inscribe their candles with an athame, and cast a circle around the altar before commencing rituals. It’s thought to transport power from us, through the knife itself. It’s used only for magical purposes, and generally unsharpened.
The Wand
Traditionally made from the wood of a willow, elder, apple, or cherry tree. The length should measure from elbow to tip of your index finger. The maker of the wand channels the power into it, so it’s good to make your own. Doing this, keep in mind the tree your wand came from. You can carve or sand down the wand, then varnish and charge it. It’s a summoning tool used to evoke the spirits. It can also be used to bless/charge objects, and draw down the Moon in spellcasting.
The Broomstick
A phallic symbol, female witches generally using it in fertility rites. Often placed near the hearth of the home to protect the opening, or at the fireplace to prevent evil from entering there. By sweeping dust from the home, you’re symbolically castling our bad energy. At a witches wedding, the couple jumps over a broom to display their union.
Crystals and gemstones
Their use varies based on the stone and intent, but ensure to cleanse and charge them before/after use!
The book of shadows
A workbook in which a witch records their spells and rituals. All spells cast are noted for future reference. Also works as a dream diary, and tends to contain a moon phase calendar that can be detached and replaced each year. Traditionally handwritten.

Tarot Tips
🃏 Find The Empress in your deck. The card behind her will reveal what you need to do to nurture and care for yourself.
🃏 When in conflict or competition with someone, look for 5 of Wands. The card behind it will reveal the solution to the problem.
🃏 If you see the same card over and over again in readings, it is a sign and you must pay attention to its message for you.
🃏 For a better understanding of each card, observe it closely and form your own interpretation that follows its themes. It will help you interpret readings better.
🃏 To find out what is making you feel stuck or delayed, look to The Hanged Man. The card underneath him will show what is holding you back. The card in front of him will show you how to overcome it.
🃏 When shuffling your cards, if any card drops out of your grasp, take it as a sign and read the card.
🃏 You do not need crystals with you to do proper readings, but a good way to cleanse your deck is to place a clear quartz on the top of your deck before each reading. Keep in mind; there’s a variety of ways you can cleanse your deck.
🃏 Often when The High Priestess appears in a reading, she is trying to tell you that you know the answers and that you should listen to your inner voice.
🃏 There is no wrong way to shuffle or cleanse your deck. Do what feels right for you!

I finished my trip with my family in Rome, where I felt very much at home. Even more so than last time I visited, they really made me feel like family. Breakfast always set out like this, coffee already made. It’s not much, but it’s enough to make me feel taken care of in a foreign country. This entire experience has been a whirlwind, and it’s sometimes been tough to feel settled anywhere. Especially being sick for a week, I missed the familiarity and comfort of my home, family, and friends. This trip has been incredible, but I’m happy to be going home and I’m happy to be ending with family. There’s a lot to reflect on. My world has widened and I hope it keeps widening. :)

This is graffiti that I passed by the Colleseo in Rome. Although 51% of Italians say homosexuality is “never acceptable” on a 10-point scale of “never acceptable” to “always acceptable,” I’ve found Rome to be one of the most progressive cities with regards to LGBTQIA+ rights. Rome just had a massive pride celebration in the city center, complete with extravagant floats and drag queens on stilts. Some of the people from the program went to Rome for the weekend and caught it. Still, “progressive” is a relative term for gay rights in Italy. Even in Rome, homosexuality is not often talked about openly. Sexuality is briefly mentioned or hinted at with a tug on the ear, but hardly joked about or discussed casually. If anything, I would say that it’s more tolerated than accepted. Still, that’s progress.
