Part 4.

The meaning behind the original music

A lot of people mistakenly believe that Yuri!!! on ICE uses existing music - in a way, for me it's a compliment, but at the same time, I'm also sad to hear that (laugh).

One reason why people believe that is because some of the compositions have titles that make you think that they are real-life existing music, like "Rapsodie espagnole". So, I'm sure that when somebody is lookin for the music online, they then can come to the realization that it's anime-original. In fact, every composition that is included on the soundtrack CD is original.

Why they want to take it so far? - At first, for me as well, it was so strange. When during the first meeting, I'd heard from Yamamoto Director, that she wants me to write traditional classical music, I even thought: "Then you should simply use some famous, existing recording..."

But the Director explained that existing music is already strongly associated with specific skaters - for example, like "La Strada" composed by Nino Rota performed by Takahashi Daisuke. In addition to that, the Director wanted to surpass real-life figure skating, and that's why, we have created the original music.
