What do you mean it's months after the duel?! I mean, I'm not saying it's not (too lazy to reread the chapters) but I always assumed it's idk 3 months top.

I also never was sure if he got professional help after that (he was in the middle of nowhere after all) so the healing might take even longer.

One thing that's always confused me slightly about the way post-injury Vasily gets depicted by both Noda and many fans is his (lack of) speaking ability. He often gets depicted like he can't vocalize at all, but that simply can't be true.

Think about it. He got shot in the mouth, not the throat. His vocal chords are perfectly intact, so his ability to vocalize is preserved. It's just that he no longer has the physical ability to form words correctly anymore.

Even still, he should be able to make more complex mouth sounds than simple huffing and closed-mouth grunting like, "Mmph!"

Now, I've already inferred the Doylist reason for this. If Noda was going to have a Russian character in the main cast, he wanted to avoid having to juggle with the Russian language being spoken all the time. So, he made his character mute. And that's totally fair, I get it.

But whenever I saw Vasily making absolutely no vocalizations except that same old grunting, all I could see was the hand of the author contriving a convenient situation for himself. I just couldn’t figure out what Watsonian reason there would be in-universe for Vasily to not at least try and speak to everyone else, especially characters like Tsukishima who actually know Russian.

But then I realized, the answer was staring me in the face the entire time. The reason he doesn't try to speak is the same reason he always covers his face.

It's his pride.

We already know that he doesn't like to expose his scars to people, and always actively tries to cover his face unless a given situation demands otherwise. Following that same reasoning, it means that the fact he never speaks doesn't come from a lack of ability to do so. Rather, it is an active choice not to try. Because he knows he can't speak properly anymore. He doesn't want other people to hear him struggle and mangle his words, let alone hear himself doing just that. That would be undignified in his head, and would only serve to humiliate him even further than Ogata already had.

Well, that's honestly the most in-character reason I can come up with for why Vasily isn't more vocal than he is. He just chooses not to be because of how prideful he is. (Shoutout to all the headcanons out there where he's a selective mute for neurodivergent reasons. I like those ones too because let's be honest, that boy is not neurotypical.)

*cracks her neck* time to share my opinion with the internet 1. I agree about his pride. this theory adds high quality drama for the fics.

2. Vocal cords are not the only part responsible for speaking. My bet is his tongue got busted as well.

3. It could also just be painful. At least his molars got damaged, probably the jaw as well. My wisdom teeth pain made me think twice before speaking let alone a fluffing gunshot. He also doesn't seem to be the most talkative person in the manga so he might not have a reason to bother talking to others over the pain #introvert

Other thoughts to share: 4. I have no idea who but somebody in this fandom noticed his beard is different in this scene:

and their idea was that he had to shave the bottom part because of drooling caused by tongue damage. So he got reducted from this:[insert any pre duel panel of Vasily] to drooling mess. So another hit to his pride.

Vasily not only doesn't speak but after him getting judo slammed against the floor by Sugimoto till running after Ogata in the brewery we don't even see his monologue (i might be wrong bc i don't care enough to check every chapter now but you get the idea). After all he is a side character and he is not loved by Noda as he is by us <3
