Owen stopped short at the response. Christ. Why did he stick around again? “At least you know how to make a guy feel welcomed,” there. Deflect with sarcasm. Then he didn’t have to think about the possibility of being borderline tortured if he irritated Lawton too much. 

“I’m being welcoming. Don’t usually give a warning.” The first part was a joke, but said so dryly that Owen might have to guess at it. He didn’t hate the kid - if anything, he was a minor annoyance on a much smaller scale than other squad members - he just didn’t make friends with many people. “You’re tolerable as long as you don’t try anything stupid. It could be a lot worse for you.”

“She’s battle tested, then.” Her having a cat humanized her a little, he supposed. The children as well. “And persistent.” Not sure if loyal applied to cats, really. “Sounds like you didn’t have any choice but to adopt her, in that case. She have a name? Or just ‘cat’?”

Owen had to resist the urge to snort. The last mission they went on had gone pretty horrendously. The only upside was that Lawton hadn’t decided to kill him after Owen had used the mini paperclip boomerangs to screw with him. Saving a guy’s life apparently went a long way. Not long enough to keep him from being threatened, but long enough that he wasn’t being shot at. That was an improvement, right? 

“If you’re gonna do that, try to avoid anything too vital.”

“Don’t worry, kid. I can keep you alive and in pain for a long time.”

He wasn’t going to brag about his skills, necessarily, but Mercer had decided to fuck with him before - and life saver or not, Floyd would not be going easy on him. Waller wouldn’t let him kill the kid, that was clear from many other operations that had gone wrong, but a little bit of bodily harm would make him learn. You get hurt when you fuck up and you won’t do it again.

“Never really been a pet person myself.” But he could understand it. The lifestyle didn’t support it, though. Not for him. And that was why he shouldn’t have asked. “I get that.” He doesn’t know what her situation was - but he’s lost one. So he understands.

             ‘i like kids. and i was a little CURIOUS.’ tatsu replied quietly, trying to be at least a little open for once. of course, she didn’t mention how she had experience as a PARENT herself, but that didn’t need mentioning. ‘she seems sweet.’

“Bit of both, then. Fair enough.” And Zoe’s a fairly safe topic. “First met her when she was about four or so.” He’s not giving up any sensitive information. It’s fine. “You got anyone? Or some pet. I don’t know your life.” Family questions are...not always a good idea - he would know, after all.

        ‘you… you mentioned having a DAUGHTER.’ there’s no question in her words, but they sound curious and almost soft nonetheless. it made her wonder, mostly about whether she’d still be the same woman she was today if her own daughters were with HER.

“Yeah.” What’s her motive? Just curious? Hard to say. “- name’s Zoe. She’s a good kid. Smart and all.” Not that he’s spent much time with her (or her mom) between being Deadshot and prison. “You like kids or just wanna know about my life?”

“Yeah, well, you haven’t exactly impressed me either, shooting my Knight and all,” Sasha answered with a shrug. Her tone didn’t give much away, but she didn’t look happy with the situation. 

“Buisness is buisness. It’s your choice if you hold a grudge. At least you got to see my abilities before we met. Consider it a bonus or something.” He had a lot of enemies - a lot of people who cared about his targets. She was just another one of those. At least being forced to collaborate meant that she wasn’t fighting him outright.

Owen seems to brighten up a little at being told his information isn’t completely useless. Not too much. The sun has taken its toll by now.

“Floyd,” he repeats. It’s different. Not one he thinks he’s heard, except- “Like the band?” He nods at the suggestion to get out of the sun. “My face hurts.” Then he’s shaking his head. “Miss Turner doesn’t like me out-” Owen stops midsentence, eyes widening and his face looking horrified. “I didn’t say that.” He hadn’t meant to mention her. He wants to go back to Corey. Corey’s nice.

“Yeah, like the band.” Not the worst connection that the kid could have made if he’s being honest. “That’s ‘cause of the sun. Come on, get under this overhang with me.” He didn’t want to pull the kid to a car or anything before determining that the whole situation was safe. “When you get back to Corey, tell her to put somethin on it or it’s gonna hurt worse.” He’s dealt with sunburns before and it’s never fun to be around someone whining about how much their back hurts and see the skin bubbling and peeling. This kid’s guardian’s gonna have some work cut out for her.  Sooner he gets him to her, the better.

“Who’s Miss Turner?” He paused. Kid didn’t want to talk about it which could mean a lot of things, mostly that Corey’s probably not supposed to have this kid. Typical. But what does he care? Kid wants to go to one place, he doesn’t need to do anything but that. “You know what? It doesn’t really matter if you wanna answer that or not. I’ll still take you to Corey.”

A last name? Now Owen feels stupid for never thinking to ask. He should have, considering she had taken care of him. “She’s got blond hair, but the ends are red! And… she’s shorter than you…” and that about covers what he knows.

“Owen,” he answers, rubbing at his face and wincing immediately from the pain. “Owen Clark, but ‘s not my last name.” He huffs a little with a bit of indignation. It doesn’t matter, really. He doesn’t know what his last name should be. It’s changed more than once.

Kids. At least he had some idea. Floyd began to go through his own mental contacts. No one - wait - that couldn’t be who she was. She was just a passing acquaintance (though honestly, who wasn’t) but it could be her. “That’s not too unhelpful.” Surprisingly.

“Just call me Floyd.” If this kid thought he could laugh at his name, well they’d be parting ways. “Probably should get you to the shade. Your Corey probably ain’t gonna be too happy about a sunburn. You ever go outside before this?” Great. No last name that he knew, at least. Kid had probably changed hands more than once.

Owen looks up with his face pink from the sun. No doubt he’ll have a decent sunburn by tomorrow. Possibly before it’s dark out. “’m tryin’a find a lady named Corey,” he says, as if everyone should know the woman. No one had yet, but he seems to remain hopeful. What other option does he have?

“You got a last name for this lady? Or a description” Floyd doubts that this kid’s looking for anyone that he knows, but strange shit happens all the time. Sure he’s had young kids of his own, but other peoples’ kids are not his strong suit. “You got a name yourself?” Should probably get this one out of the sun before he turns into a lobster.
