Now that my humanity's been proven - where's my cookie?
"If you use em dash in your works, it makes them look AI generated. No real human uses em dash."
Imaging thinking actual human writers are Not Real because they use... professional writing in their works.
Imagine thinking millions of people who have been using em dash way before AI becomes a thing are all robots.

The vampires in Sinners acting petulant about not being let in was pure comedy. Despite the menacing undertones, their haggling, heckling, and trading insults just to be allowed inside reminded me of how families act during family gatherings. So unserious

Bo being so nonchalant and saying, "He's just hungry" about Cornbread. Sir please, Cornbread is snacking on a chunk he took out of a guy's face. So unserious

This scene really summed up Remmick's vision of freedom. He's someone who has clearly lost his history to violent colonization and is looking to recover it through someone who can act as a mediator, that someone being Preacher Boy. Yet Remmick's vision of freedom is far from equal - all the vampires he creates function within his ideas/his culture. When he does the riverdance they all join in, they are no longer reveling in their own culture - they are following Remmick's lead. And this is done so brilliantly by Coogler - because one would assume solidarity between Remmick and the rest due to their shared histories of oppression and colonization. Yet Remmick uses his race as a way to slip through the cracks - he gets through to the KKK couple, knowing fully well that they would let him in because he is white, relying on their racist hostility and distrust of the Choctaws. And that speaks to the whole point about solidarity - affective and empathetic solidarities are not built by people who can by relying on their own structural privileges to further their own exploitative agenda slip through the cracks - instead it is built through people who put themselves on the line and use their own privilege to uplift people who don't have that same. What a brilliant brilliant movie oof
(In other news, Jack O'Connell as Remmick has got me feeling things 👁👄👁)

On season 4 of the expanse, and what a show! The way it deals with a complex and layered cocktail of contingency, human agency, ecological collapse, geopolitics, and unintended consequences is just off the charts. Keeping these larger structures in mind while also writing such a human story - the desire for companionship, to go explore the unknown, to make contact, reckoning with the consequences of one's actions while also remaining true to oneself is truly something. The future with all its technological advancement is far from democratic, has only deepened existing structural inequalities, and can't be separated from its human cost. And that's what I love about this - that it is so prescient. The human actors in this story are looking for a better life, a better world after being fucked over by the systems in power, looking for a way out both politically and otherwise. I'll stop my rambling now - but oof what a story!
Also people who might see this, please send me more scifi recs
