Lore - Alexandra Bracken

I had higher hopes for this book. It wasn't bad, I'm always going to be a sucker for Greek mythology retellings, but it wasn't as good as others made it out to be. The world building, while an interesting concept, lacked some details and I didn't feel as interested in it as I was in Lore's past or other characters. Speaking of characters, this book could've been written without Caster and honestly been exactly the same. I feel like the relationship between him and Lore was so forced and awkward, and for being a god he was quite useless. I did like the little mystery of how he became a god though. Also, the reveal of Lore's grandpa figure (I'm blanking on his name) ended up being Hermes... very sneaky... though I believe he didn't have bad intentions, leave that up to Athena. Anyways, this book was about average of enjoyment and three stars feels fitting. If you know and like Greek mythology you'll probably be entertained but if not... this might not be the book for you.

Reading Lore by Alexandra Bracken and my PJO obsessed ass is sobbing at all the losses and what it means for the slain gods.

Most of the book came off- meh, to me? But that doesn’t mean certain things didn’t stick out to me because they did. There were certainly bright spots, so. 2 stars maybe? Maybe this is all due to my attachment to certain figures from pre-existing works and mythos and the way this doesn’t just, hit me the same way?

*2 stars as a personal rating. Viewing it from an impartial way- I’d give it 3.5 maybe.*

But on the other hand- false Dionysus/Iason and Hermes, I need to know MORE. Like??

I have so much curiosity about these two. The old gods hating the new gods but Hermes still fell in love with one? And loved him to the extent that he protected him from Athena’s wrath by giving her information he would feel guilty about giving. The fact that they were lovers for DECADES. That Iason is the only mortal Hermes would go to such an extent for??? They would hide together in the Agon- and Hermes so clearly shared all his hiding spots with Iason bc when they eventually fell apart, Iason mentions that Hermes had to find a NEW place.

And just. The pain of the break up??? They split over Iasus’s alliance with Wrath/False Ares but Iason so clearly had regrets over that. Like. Okay Iason is clearly an asshole but he’s also a GRIEVING asshole who loved Hermes and made a deal that Hermes would be safe from Wrath. He managed to find Hermes when Hermes was hidden bc he knows him that well. The fact that he believed, even after Hermes’ death, even after Hermes wouldn’t talk to him after their split (bc Iason!! Allied!! With!! Wrath!!) that Hermes wouldn’t abandon him. That Iason was so angry, so grief stricken, that he wouldn’t ally with Athena and Lore because he wanted to be the one to kill Wrath, to avenge his lover. And we’ll never know, how they could have ended, because he died before he could find what, if anything, Hermes left him, and he died before he could avenge him- and Hermes died before he could listen to Iason’s apologies, before he was willing to listen to his apologies.

I can’t write fics bc I struggle with committing to them. However I so badly want to write a fix-it, where when Hermes is about to be killed at the start of the Agon, Iason manages to save him. Bc the potential of exes who are still in love on the run together is so good. Hermes being all, I’m helping lore. And Iason is so jealous but goes along with it bc he needs to properly apologize to Hermes and he hopes actions would speak louder than words- that, and he now has to stay with him bc Hermes almost died and he’s terrified of it actually happening. The fix-it should also have Artemis ascending bc damnit I am NOT splitting up the twins that’s just cruel 😭
