Do You Know What is Pandemic?
What is a pandemic?
Pandemic is the classification given to a disease that can infect all the inhabitants of the world . The term is used when an easily contaminated disease reaches several countries and is easily transmitted between people.
The black plague was one of the biggest pandemics the world faced and it hit much of the European continent in the 14th century. It is estimated that the disease may have killed up to 200 million people.
AIDS was discovered in the 1970s and still infects millions of people every year. The corona-virus, which emerged in 2019, was also declared a pandemic.
The main characteristics of a pandemic are:
rapid and global contagion;
expansion to different countries or continents;
difficulty in containing contamination;
contamination of a large number of people.
The WHO (World Health Organization) is responsible for decreeing that a disease has become a pandemic. To this end, it monitors the growth of cases of the disease, the number of affected sites and the effectiveness of measures to prevent contamination.
The WHO decrees that a disease is a pandemic to warn that all countries are at risk of contagion and must follow the measures indicated to contain the growth of contamination.
What are the differences between pandemic, epidemic, endemic and outbreak?
It is common for these words to be used interchangeably when we talk about highly contagious diseases that spread quickly, but they are different.
The pandemic is a disease that spreads quickly due to its high contagion power. It can reach large proportions and cross borders, reaching several countries.
