I really honestly believe that there’s not enough appreciation for internal contradiction and conflicting elements both in terms of characterization and relationships.

Like Cas both wants to belong and has the impulse to just go out and do things on his own. He is both proud and ashamed. He is ancient and new. Etc etc.

Dean both feels the need to be the moral authority and is crushed by the burden of it. When he needs the people around him is exactly when he pushes them away. He clings to this rough-and-tumble individualist masculinity, but all he really wants is his family to be together.

And the main thing I've been thinking of is how with Dean and Cas, we always talk about how there’s a fundamental disconnect and miscommunication between them. But I think that sometimes we forget that their relationship is built on their fundamental similarity, on them relating to one another. Like there’s at least a couple of things Misha has said about Cas that I disagree with, but one that i find really interesting is (and I wish I remembered when/where this was) that sometimes Cas feels like Dean is the only one in the world he can relate to.

Like these are contradictory things, but they are all true, and it's important that they’re all true, because contradictory things being true at the same time is was creates tension and creates movement, it's what keeps things dynamic and interesting.

The other day I mentioned a post that had a quadrant chart with a war criminal-angel axis and a virgin-slut axis, and how someone said that Cas was in the middle. But he’s not in the middle, he's at the extremes simultaneously. Like he’s not in some milquetoast little-bit-of-both center. He is all the way at the edges. And you would think it's untenable but that's exactly what makes it interesting.

And I guess that’s also my number one critique on Cas mischaracterizarion. When he's just one thing. When he’s just the poorest little self-doubting wet cat, or just a badass bamf, or just understanding and wise and empathetic, or just alien and clueless. None of those are right. And he’s not in the mushy middle of these things. He's flipping between them, he exists in the overturn, in the revolution.

Castiel is the best, most loyal soldier, and he is the most zealous rebel. He is inhuman and the most human. He is full of self-doubt and he has the courage of his convictions.

This started out as a general post and then became a Castiel post. Because Castiel. But yeah, I don’t think you can fully understand Cas, and therefore understand destiel, unless you embrace internal contradiction.

Watching my first watch through of SPN ever. I’m on season 9 and as someone who has been on tumblr since ancient times but didn’t actually get in to it, I think everyone DOWNPLAYED how crazy Destiel is. How did veterans survive that….. It’s just. What. What am I watching. Why does Deans voice get SOFT when he talks to Cas particularly??? Why did Dean ditch Sam to watch Cas at the supermarket???? I think because of the meme I was convinced it was cas who was the one obviously in love but. No. It’s Dean. And it’s embarrassing for him. This is crazy but Destiel fans weren’t crazy y’all were on to something all this time…..

I think one of the kindest things you can do for people with various mental health struggles is just... let people back into your life after they've been absent for a while.

Making friends as an adult is so fucking hard already and isolating yourself from other people is a very common symptom of depression, anxiety, burnout, ocd, trauma, grief, etc. Which means that someone will do the hard work of recovery/healing and resurface back into a world where their previous friends have written them off because they stopped showing up.

So if you know someone where you're like "yeah we could have been better friends but they fell off the map a bit" and that person suddenly reaches out, or starts showing up to events even though you kind of forgot they were still in the group chat... well they may have been Going Through It and you don't actually have to punish them for their absence you can just be glad that they're back.

All of it after spending an entire year in purgatory looking for said friend? And being completely heartbroken over the prospect of having lost him for good this time? Shut up.

Here's a clip of more from Misha's panel and he confirmed Robert Berens intentionally wrote that confession to mean romantic love not love in a "love ya bro" kind of way, confirmed Berens was going to leave the show for the final season but stayed so he could see that storyline through, confirmed that there were "stages" to how Destiel was treated in the show, it started out with fandom viewpoints, and then some winks and nods done by the show, and then eventually the writers were working in hints in that direction, he confirmed that yes he and Jensen discussed it, confirmed at a certain point they started playing into it more deliberately (seemingly in pace with the writers and the story hints) and reiterated he was really stunned that they were able to give Cas an open love declaration like that.

This is confirmation of writer intent. Confirmation the actors talked about it and knew about it and played into it, following the writers. Confirmation of creative deliberation. No this was not just some headcanon or fandom delusion.

People at the show, who make the show, were for it, and since the network was never going to let that be full-open mutually confirmed they did their best to convey it however they good. Snuck it in the back door. And we've already been told there was a lot of careful chess-playing to get the confession to air and they were all worried the network might cut it.

No amount of screaming and hate and denial from spnstanbunchanumbers on twitter is going to undo it or make Destiel shippers "delusional" for noticing, make it less canon.

The creatives at spn were on your side. This was not a queerbait. If you want to accuse anything of that, please aim it at the cw network and it's cap on representation and its queer erasure, because broadcast TV networks are like this. They are still like this, things do seem to be changing a little, as Misha said, things are becoming a bit more inclusive and open, but it's not like the whole system reforms all at once.

Cas being gay and canonically in love with Dean got erased in show-connected PR, and for a time, stifled on CE con stages. That doesn't make it not canonical.

FYI for historical context, the reason "canon Destiel" even became the major discourse that it did was because of how the show started handling it differently. That shift happened in Carver era. And Carver hired Berens.
