How long does that potion last?

Hi! Here's a guide I wrote for how long Minecraft potions last in approximation with real time. This is for Java edition only, and hopefully will be useful in stuff like fanfiction.

For reference, a full Minecraft day is 20 minutes in-game. That's 10 minutes of daytime, 3 minutes of dawn/dusk, and 7 minutes of night. I will be equating 10 minutes of daytime = 12 hours of a real-life day. I'm calculating this via comparing percentages, so let me know if I have messed up the math. Potion times are from the wiki and instant potions such as healing or harming are left out for obvious reasons.

20-22 second potions: Potion of Slowness IV; Potion of the Turtle Master I and II; Potion of Poison II; Potion of Regeneration II

Lasts approximately 0.396 hours real-time, or 23 minutes and 46 seconds (for 20 seconds potion length)

40-45 second potions: Potion of Poison; Potion of the Turtle Master +; Potion of Regeneration

Lasts approximately 0.9 hours real-time, or 54 minutes (for 45 seconds potion length)

1.5 minute potions: Potion of Regeneration +; Potion of Swiftness II; Potion of Strength II; Potion of Leaping II; Potion of Slow Falling; Potion of Poison +; Potion of Weakness; Potion of Slowness

Lasts 1.8 hours real-time, or 1 hour and 48 minutes

3 minute potions: Potion of Swiftness; Potion of Fire Resistance; Potion of Night Vision; Potion of Strength; Potion of Leaping; Potion of Water Breathing; Potion of Invisibility

Lasts 3.6 hours real-time, or 3 hours and 36 minutes.

4 minute potions: Potion of Slow Falling +; Potion of Weakness +; Potion of Slowness +

Lasts 4.8 hours real-time, or 4 hours and 48 minutes.

5 minute potions: Potion of Luck

Lasts 6 hours real-time.

8 minute potions: Potion of Swiftness +; Potion of Fire Resistance +; Potion of Night Vision +; Potion of Strength +; Potion of Leaping +; Potion of Water Breathing +; Potion of Invisibility +

Lasts 9.6 hours real-time, or 9 hours and 36 minutes.

Tipped arrows, according to the wiki, last 1/8th the time of their corresponding potion if applicable. Since that might vary, I'm not going to calculate them all here.

When Gem got into Secret life, she was excited.

It was a game! About killing her friends! Which she loved doing! What could be a better way to spend her time?

She was confused when talking to the others, seeing how their demeanor is forever cautious and more subdued.

When she asks, they simply say that she’ll learn.

Even as the game progresses, and every scratch and scrape doesn’t heal, and she is in constant pain until she dies, she’s excited!

The others try to warn her about it. She thinks they’re overreacting.

Even when given the boogeyman curse, even when she turns red. She gets to kill people! This is so much fun!

Even when she’s forced to kill Pearl, Pearl immediately forgives her. But there’s something behind her smile Gem can’t decipher.

She has a lot of fun as a red name, running around killing her friends just like she always likes doing.

Even when Impulse dies, she’s having too much fun. It’s a game! He’ll be fine back on Hermitcraft.

It doesn’t hit her until Scott is on his knees begging her to kill him.

This isn’t a game.

This is torture.

It doesn’t hit her until Pearl and Scar kill her in a 2v1. And she’s forced to watch as a ghost as Pearl dies and Scar is left numb as he wins. Because of course he isn’t celebrating.

This isn’t a game.

This is torture.

Would Gem have celebrated if she won?

She isn’t sure anymore.

I knew the hermitcraft and life series plot bunnies would come for me eventually.

Ideas so far

BotW x Renchanting au - Basically what happens when I have multiple fandoms on the brain.

Renchanting au - Untitled. More or less based upon a story I am working on. This is diverging from the story plot to avoid spoiling things.

Untitled - An oc centric what if. I made up lore about the hermits being galactic explorers and their main objective is building communities for other explorers. The ocs are a team sent in to make sure things are functioning properly. Setting is the season 9 world. The mission goes wrong thanks to a cursed crown.

Untitled Life Series series. Martyn’s lore is running rampant in my head. I can see potential for a thriller type series here. (Also been reading The 3rd Life Game by Taidko which is also giving me thoughts). Also been inspired by a couple of animatics (Here and here)

Dug up an old oc, in the process of fine tuning her. The timelines line up in a way that Poppy could’ve been listening to Alastor’s radio shows when they were both still living.

I find this hilarious cause my intentions for their lives in hell is that she is now his tailor.

Hazbin Hotel's concept of Hell is a set-up for so many funny reunions. Like, Alastor was a radio show host, so his voice has to be pretty recognizable. Imagine one fine morning getting run over by a car and simultaneously learning that 1) Hell is real 2) your good-natured charming buddy Alastor from the radio station who went missing 5 years ago is absolutely wiping the floor with the majority of Hell's population and gleefully so.

Remembers the Anastasia au I started thinking of one rainy sleepless night.

Recalls questioning who would help little Charlie escape. Figured a shapeshifted Sin could have done so.

Proceeds to loss interest do to lack of canonical information/lore.

This changes Vaggie’s role quite a bit.

(King and Hooty were still undetermined. Was debating on keeping them the same.)

An attempt to bring Ren back messed up and dropped him into Tango’s place by accident.

He spent the day pretending everything was fine while the Watchers running the life series scrambled to fix the problem

what if the watchers system like glitched and fucked up and just like. accidentally deleted rendog from the life series. like they lost his save file and forgot to make backups.

Thinking about the life smp series while playing Breath of the Wild was a bad idea cause now my thoughts are expanding upon a whole au and I want to write/doodle out some notes.

Right now my thoughts for the idea have expanded beyond the life series. I want to include hermitcraft and empires.

Two separate covers of Encanto songs have me thinking about my oc and I can't stop.

First up!

Waiting on a Miracle - Stephanie Beatriz

I went with Annapantsu's cover. There's a minor lyric "Hey, I'm still a part of the family Madrigal" becomes "Hey, I'm still a part of the family after all". This one I want to turn into a pmv and here's what I'm picturing for the idea:

Happens during the Star's wand ceremony. Nova (the oc in question) watches on and wants to be happy for her but she's hesitant. While everyone celebrates Nova slips away at some point and goes to the Hall of Queens aka the Grandma Room. Here's where the music would start. She's taking a breather to calm herself and vents with only her family's tapestries there to see. The song would come to a close with Nova standing before a tapestry of the first queen. This one was created based on descriptors of the queen.

Mirabel's Villain Song - We Don't Talk About Bruno by Lydia the Bard

I don't have any thing written up and already I want to write an au of an au. In this case Nova turns on her family far earlier in the story. The Magic High Commission knows about her true lineage and treat her with indifference. Nova remains quiet and stays out of their way. She's found that Butterfly Castle has a lot of hiding spots. Another thing is the MHC like to talk when they think no one else is around. Nova learns a lot from overhearing their discussions.

At some point while Star is still very little an incident occurs that results in Nova leaving or being sent away. Her leaving I can picture the song being how it all goes down.
