final blog 4/21

Today we are finishing up the final project, a process journal of everything we have created so far. The most dificult part for me has been the design of the pages. As you can see in the sketches page all of my images are different sizes, which makes it difficult to lay them out equally. In order to fix this I am going to chose specific images in my sketches to highlight instead of the entire sketch. I also have trouble using the grids as there is an uneven amount of boxes , but am able to kind of work with it as I lay everything out off-center and then select all and drag them to the middle. I've also been enjoying making small images for each section that reflect my final pieces. For instance, on the logo pages I have created a small snail shell just like the theme of my logo, Jazz snail.

I am going for a double major in Studio art and Biology for my undergrad. When talking to my high school biology teacher she mentioned medical illustration as a possible career path. I found this webinar to be very informative on how to get to that point as well as all the different avenues once you get there. I did not think about doing medical animation, and honestly did not realize that this was even an option before attending this webinar. I also learned that designing something to instruct and educate is not as simple as designing something for aesthetic purposes. You need to have relevent content, a good storytelling ability (ability to convey your information in a clear and accessible way), and it has to look nice. I also noticed the broad majors and minors all of the different students were doing, and that helps me realize I can specialize deeper into biology and still be able to do illistrations.

I really enjoyed this project and exercise. The process of creating a simpler image from a complex photo of a snail proved to be more difficult than I thought. It took me multiple tries and several do overs to get a final result that I am proud of. Here are two different designs for a jazz bar, one is classier and one is more open with open mics.
One thing I found interesting in the very beginning of the reading was the notion of creating a design that is memorable when someone sees multiple designs a day.
I also like the idea of graphic design with the addition of music and interactive qualities. That brings the viewer to be more connected with the piece you are making. Apps are a lot like that with interactive qualities. If you want someone to click on an app it has to draw their attention and make people want to open and interact with their design and what it stands for.

These last two weeks I started working on a logo for "Jazz Snail," a late-night jazz lounge. I am trying to infuse the snail with important jazz objects, like the piano, trumpet, saxophone, and microphone. The snail shell is a great place to put an object, but I am also experimenting with changing the body into the object as well.
In the textbook I found the idea that experience is more important than the message being put across and I like that idea and will use it when creating my next projects. Design to me is meant to bring emotion and draw the audience in so that they can then later understand the message, so it should be very important to emphasize the experience and emotion that you can draw from a design. I also think that it is important to be able to continue to learn and change with the times and technology. While we have a ton of useful technologies on our hands right now, in ten years who knows how much more advanced it will be, and in order to keep up with the ever changing technologies you need to stay educated on the current technology as well as what is going on in society so your designs can stay relevant.

I am working on a poster that uses both drawings, paintings, and digital art. My original thought about what to do for this poster was just a simple drawing that would draw your attention to the center and the words, more specifically I was thinking of a chess piece. After growing this idea I came up with a more complex idea that kind of played off the simplistic idea but added colors and depth. I want to layer the drawings and the quote in a way that shows three distinct layers of depth.
Similar to the idea of simple designs, when designing a book cover you have to be relatively simple as to not overwhelm the potential reader, unless of course that's the point you want to make and it reflects the book. I think this can also be done in magazines and newspapers and within the magazines and newspapers and the designs inside the pages. Simplicity is key when the real purpose of the object is to read what is inside.
The last few chapters of the textbook talk about social innovations that can be influenced or created by design. This can be done through things like brandings, packaging, and advertisements that emphasize what the product not only is, but what it is about and what it stands for. You can feel the vibe of the product just by looking at it and not necessarily understanding the product itself.

This was my first time using Adobe Illustrator and I really enjoyed learning something new. I used three different styles of fonts, Bungee regular, Rockwell condensed bold and American Typewriter bold. I tried to reflect my font choice in my design, with the more stylized font less crowded but more letters, and with the blocky ones I used mainly the pathfinder tool to crop and invert where the letters overlapped. I used less of the pathfinder tool with the American Typewriter font so it would not get too busy.
One thing that really stood out to me in the reading was when they interviewed Hjalti Karlsson and Jan Wilker and asked them what they look at when hiring someone. While their work shown in the textbook doesn't have any typography in it, one of their basic skills that they require is a basic knowledge of typography, which I find to be really interesting and wonder how broad the ability to understand typography can go into the art world.
I also found it interesting what jobs and opportunities are available for designers. House Industries, for example, is not only a team of designers, but a business that does work with many types of clientele.

I had some trouble working with the AI art generator at first, and spent a majority of my time editing what words I put into them. After doing like 3 different word generators for each prompt I had to blend the images together to get what I wanted. For my first memoir I did a colorful brain and then the black one, and blended them together, and the background I had to flip. The second one I got a picture of the balloons in the city and then took a picture of a robot and cut out its head and warped it to fit over all the balloons, as well as drawing on top of the balloons in the background to make them look similar to the balloons I edited in and then blurred them to make it go back into the background.
I really like Stefan Sagmeister's work, and how he uses shadow to make his art look so real and unedited. I also like the way that the book starts out by interviewing graphic design artists. It really shows how to start a career in this field as well as how all the people are different but still share a similar interests, but go about doing it differently.
