The progress of mental healthcare in the UK has always been economically dependent rather than socially. The only reason asylums were abolished is because they were deemed no longer 'economically viable'. This is in contrast to Italy where the wellbeing of patients was foremost in revolutionising the way mental health care is treated. Today mental healthcare on the nhs is woefully behind physical health care due to cuts by the government, inequality in spending and a general insouciant attitude towards the national mental health care crisis. Theresa May promises health care reforms (emphasis on promises) as David Cameron did (without delivering) and this continued blase attitude to mental health has had very real consequences. People are not treated as individuals through the system (I have experienced this myself) and as such the care they receive is unsuitable. There is an over reliance on SSRIs for treating depression and anxiety disorders because of a 6 month waiting list for CBT. SSRIs are a very passive means of controlling the problem without fixing it and can make the issues worse through dependence. Trans people experience delays through lack of training for GPs and have to jump through hoops to receive treatment. Treatment often comes too late resulting in suicides and dangerous behaviour to cope with dysphoria. The NHS is also limited when it comes to support for psychosis and other mental disorders and i'd love to hear peoples personal experiences so I can get a more subjective, personal understanding of the NHS's shortcomings rather than statistics and numerical data (people are all individuals of course! something the nhs does not cater for). I aim to make a series of posters illustrating situations of people who this inadequate system has failed and hopefully encourage awareness and a greater sense of urgency in fixing it.
