Whoo boy- I am so so so biased in this question! lmao, I'll do my best to not let my blorbo could my judgment!

Rant incoming. Apologies y'all. (as per usual what I say is canon adjacent or canon-informed, but definitely not canon)

I'd say that it's up to preference! I'm blanking on the word for the skin patterns/bone structure on his face atm (0-0 whoops my bad y'all) but for every Aenar I'd say that their markings are all different! As is with tattoos/makeup/body mods etc. (Makeup is more like body products/hairstyles but u know what I mean) So, honestly, it's really up to the human.

As for how he compares to other Aenar, well, they don't really have rankings/comparisons like that so, to an Aenar, he'd be perfectly fine to get along with unless you hated his temperament. To a human, (who theoretically can see) he'd probably look similar to everyone else/esp. his family save for his face pattern! Again, I think it's a pretty heavily personal preference thing, as the Aenar themselves don't gaf about being pretty. It all comes down to the human themselves and their preferences.

(begin the headcanon rant)

Oh!! as for language the conlang I made doesn't have 'pretty' or 'ugly' in it! If you called an Aenar pretty that'd be like calling someone's aura/soul delicious. It makes absolutely zero sense to them. They see differently, and that's that. So, they smile and write it off, but usually, they don't really care much.

In Hemmer's case, it would hit hard as he's been outside his home for a while. He knows what the words mean, and he knows that appearances are important. They're not important to him but to everyone else. So, he kind of has to pay attention- maybe not care- but he has to at least think about it.

So, a compliment would go a long way- as would an insult. He'd at least appreciate the kind words, even if he didn't care/believe them.

Hello, sorry to flood ur inbox 0-0 um, I had another question oof. As I'm writing a scene and idk what i'm doing lol.

I know there's a lot of taboos for Vulcans and conversation stuff. But I don't know exactly what? Is talking about emotions bad if you talk from a logical standpoint? Same with overly-personal questions or is it fine? My instinct is to go the normal 'death, sex, overly personal' = conversation taboos for Vulcans...but I actually have no idea if that's right haha. ;v; Anywho, feel free to disregard if you want! No pressure at all! Also, thanks for all the help and resources so far! Really appreciate it! <3

So from what I’ve noticed in canon, it’s less that talking about emotions themselves is taboo it’s letting themselves feel them and therefore letting emotion cloud your logic and judgment, that is seen as a sign of weakness and lack of discipline. The ideal in Vulcan society is total non emotion. However, I can’t recall any time in canon when a Vulcan actually talked about their emotions like that so it may be both. Or perhaps it’s just something that they wouldn’t talk about in a context like starfleet or a work environment. Unfortunately we really do not have a lot of info about the average Vulcan’s day to day. 😔

I dunno if you’ve done any research on kolinahr but looking into that part of their society may help you :)

Here’s a quote from the TAS episode Yesteryear that may help explain what I’m saying lmao:

SPOCK: What you do not yet understand, [young] Spock, is that Vulcans do not lack emotion. It is only that ours is controlled. Logic offers a serenity humans seldom experience in full. We have emotions but we deal with them and do not let them control us.

I believe it’s also canon that vulcan emotions are actually stronger than humans? Not too sure where I heard that so do take it with a grain of salt lol

oh also it’s my personal hc that Vulcans probably wouldn’t have the same taboos around sex as a whole, because I feel like with humans that taboo is largely based on christianity and subsequent embarrassment. Nether of which, Vulcans have (or at least admit to having). However it is very much canon that they don’t talk about the pon farr, so perhaps it’s more about the loss of logic and emotional control that they find taboo. Kinda like how in different cultures on earth, modesty means different things? Not sure tho.

anyway, keep in mind that every society has oddballs and that this certainly won’t apply to every single Vulcan. (For example, Sybock.) Im sure that what is taboo would have a LOT to do with how they were raised and other factors.

Do Aenar have pets?

Short answer yes! Long answer under the cut!

Yes and there's a few! Dogs are the main pets, with there being only a few breeds common in the Northern Wastes (They're mainly fishing/hunting/companion dogs so they're big) there's cat-like animals too! 'Tesh' is my conlang word for dog and 's'siiyan' is cat! Rabbits are common-ish as well as tame foxes- but they're more on the 'special' side. Dogs and cats have jobs like hunting or pest control, and foxes and rabbits are more emotional-support or therapy animals.

[There's also a saying about rabbits that leads them to be kinda unlucky- "Rabbits do not fare well amongst dogs" or "Tug'ge n'deq'fe sii'atii sheb'ibii tesh" or commonly "Tugge n'deq sheb tesh" and can mean many many different things- eg. Aenar are supposed to be isolationist due to their passive nature- or eg. kind-hearted people do poorly in stressful or dangerous situations or eg. empathy can be dangerous. It's a somewhat old phrase and kind of pessimistic.]

Birds like falcons/large prey birds are considered hard to tame but incredibly useful and lucky! Weasels or ferret-like animals are considered the luckiest!

There's not a huge pet market, but most Aenar stores carry some form of pet food. (all stores are small businesses and independently owned, there's no large industry in the Aenar territories- which makes things a little harder to get and there are a lot longer wait times for special-order items like eg. handmade clothes or dishware) Pet stores don't really exist, you have to go to a pet person/supplier or know someone who already has a pet to gain one. The Aenar live in tune with the environment, so just grabbing a random rabbit or weasel or street dog and taking it home is a big no-no.

Pets are pretty pampered even if they have jobs, they're the final member of the family and get treated with respect. Cushy dog beds and good food are staples of the normal pet experience. Animal cruelty is a jailable and deeply dishonorable offense, especially against dogs and/or smaller animals who cannot defend themselves.

Children are taught to treat animals with kindness and respect and are just like any other kid in the galaxy. (Every time they pass a pet dealer/person they ask if they can get another/new dog) Children are not expected to have pets until they are older though; 10-14 yrs old. If the parents get the pet any sooner, they are expected to take the brunt of the responsibility.

Stray or wild dogs are common in the city, but everyone feeds them/shelters them often so they don't really have much to worry about. There's shelters for these 'city dogs' in local communities. Basically, they're simple shelters with heat, food, and water that the dogs/cats can return to at night, kind of like a chicken coop. If there is a dog/cat/animal with a medical condition or that is in poor shape, there is always someone willing to take the dog away from the street life. (Although most of the animals are certainly over-fed from the marketplace peddlers)

My alarm goes off. However, I’m already in the kitchen, half awake and slightly annoyed by my lapse in memory. Usually, I remember to silence it when I awake early. 

My father is on the other end of the line, and he laughs as I scramble to turn it off. 

“Sivek,” He chuckles, “How many years will it take you to just-”

“-Set an earlier alarm?” I huff sharply, “That is both redundant and illogical. If I arise before my alarm that is simply extra time for me to get ready for the day…and to call you. As you know the time difference here is quite brutal.” 

My father scoffs a little. “Yeah, yeah. I’m glad you called me to tell me about your new office love-”

“She is not ‘my love’. She…”

He snickers through the static. “-Drives you crazy? Can’t stop thinking about her?” 

“Father-”

“-I’m just saying!” He laughs in that funny human way of his, “Maybe you’re not annoyed, maybe you think it’s something that it’s not!” He pauses, his mirth fading. “It would not be the first time you’ve been wrong about your feelings, bud.” 

“Father…” I sigh, a small smile escaping my lips, “I appreciate the candor and the opportunity for you to share your insights, but I must say that I do know what I’m feeling. It is not affection, it is frustration.” 

One glance at the clock later, and I hesitate to end the call. I still have time. Unfortunately, I need more time than usual to meditate after a call with my father. Exhaling heavily, I nod, “I will meditate on this, and convene with you again soon.”   

I can almost feel my father smile through the line. He sniffs a little and mumbles, “Alright. I love you, and I’ll talk to you when you’re able to call next, ok?” 

“Alright. Thank you, Father…” 

“-I know.” He chuckles, “You’ll say ‘I love you’ to me again in about five calendar years. Your last ‘I love you’ was three weeks ago. If I know you at all, you’re currently running low on your reserves of goodwill-”

“Father!” 

“Alright!” He yelps, “I’m gonna be late for poker and homemade fish-bait making! See you soon, son! I love you… and you don’t have to say it back.” His chuckle echoes through the speaker until the line suddenly goes dead. 

I’m left with an odd emptiness in my chest- a useless feeling that I will remedy shortly.

My alarm goes off. I hit snooze; once, twice. The final alarm goes off but this time I roll out of bed. My deliciously warm, pillowy, soft nest is tempting to return to, but I have a job. 

That means math, responsibilities, and a smartass that keeps touching my thermostat. Of course, the ‘responsibilities’ part is slightly more important. The smartass I have to deal with is nothing more than an annoyance at most. 

The shower instantly turns on to my preferred temperature while my coffee warms up. It’s nice to have an apartment with all the bells and whistles. Most houses in the Northern Wastes are quite simple and probably seem barbaric to the rest of the world. 

Not that Aenar care much about the world’s opinions. 

After a quick scrub and a cup of energy, I pull on my clothes. Apparently, they’re plain and boring, but I feel like I should get a pass as someone who can't see color. They’re comfortable and professional and that’s all that matters. 

Or– at least– that’s all that matters to me. 

Naturally, my time runs out before I can eat. So, I grab a quick coffee in the shoddy downstairs lobby as I run to catch the train. 

The train’s packed, the walk is cold and the thermostat is already up twenty degrees when I arrive at my small, dingy office. For the accounting team, you’d think we’d have nicer digs than a former lab. 

A shudder runs down my spine. 

Aenar usually don’t like thinking about science experiments. Specifically, unethical scientific experiments. Lab rats are still rats, animals, and still worthy of life. I don’t care if they’re considered vermin; we still keep criminals around, don’t we? 

Shaking my head, I silently mourn for any testing animal as I sit down at my wobbly desk. 

Another cup of coffee is set down in front of me by a tall human woman. My irritable coworker Angel; lovely name, not-so-lovely temper.

“Christ.” She drawls, picking at her nails, “Did you work late again?”

Rats. I’ve been discovered. 

“Maybe.” I scoff, “Why’s the heat so high?”

“Ask your favorite person in the office- he’ll give you a PowerPoint presentation as to why he turned up the temp.” 

I hold back a groan. Right. The smartass in question happens to know the thermostat code and has our boss on his side.  

So, I’m cooked.
