Nick Cuervo-Torello 4-29-19 Monument Proposal
For my project I am proposing to put a monument in the center of campus, specifically in front of Muller and near the clock. My monument would consist of a classic cartoon style bomb falling into a basketball hoop. The reason I’m choosing this is to bring more attention to the sports at Ithaca College and attention to the history of the Bomber name. I think this is an important thing to address because I feel as though Ithaca College sports are not talked about often and don’t particularly reflect the culture of sports found in the US. Sports are such a large part of our culture. The US sports market is worth $69 billion, making up almost half of the $141 billion global sports market. Sports have been implemented into our education which is not often seen in other countries. At every olympics we consistently see US athletes getting gold medals.
By placing a sports related monument in the center of campus, it will hopefully bring more attention to Ithaca College sports. The reason I’m choosing a bomb going into a basketball hoop relates to the history of the name “Bombers.” There are a few theories about where this nickname came from. Nevertheless, they all have to do with IC’s sports teams.
One theory is that the name “Bombers” was coined by a well known sports reporter because of the basketball team’s bomb-like shots. In the article Bomber Nation: A look into the history of the Bomber name, author Angela Weldon writes, “One of the most popular theories attributes the term to a reporter in the ’30s or ’40s who coined the term after the college’s basketball team made a terrific comeback during a game. The reporter talked about the bomb shots the players made from a great distance. Following that article, as Susan Bassett ’79, director of the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics, said, the name just stuck.”
Another theory is that the name came about due to the press. The first time the term “Bomber” was used in a paper was in 1938 where an author from the Syracuse Journal referred to Ithaca College’s football team as the Blue Bombers. From then on, the name began to be used in other publications, ultimately causing the name to stick.
While it is unclear exactly where the name came from, it’s quite evident that it came about due to Ithaca College’s sports teams. The Bomber is deeply rooted in Ithaca’s past, so having a monument dedicated to the Bombers is not only an ode to sports, but also to the history of the college.

The pileated woodpecker is a bird native to North America usually found in deciduous forests. These birds span from 16 to 19 inches long and have a wingspan of 26 to 30 inches. Their feathers are typically red, white, and black. A male pileated woodpecker has a red line from the bill to the throat. This line is black in females. They typically eat fruits, nut, and berries. The pileated woodpecker uses it bill to chip out small sections of trees in search of ants and other insects. It then uses its long tongue to scoop up insects inside these crevices.

The monument I researched is the Uncle Sam Memorial Statue in my hometown, Arlington, Massachusetts. It is located on Massachusetts Ave, right where the bike path intersects with Mass Ave. It is a high traffic area so many people are likely to see it. This statue commemorates Samuel Wilson, who is thought to be the original Uncle Sam. It functions well as a monument as it conveys its message very clearly. It contains a statue of Uncle Sam, so it’s obvious that it’s a memorial for him. I think this monument is located in an appropriate places because it is situated near his birthplace.
This monument is made up of two parts: a bronze statue of Uncle Sam and a relief sculpture composed of different things. The Uncle Sam statue shows him posed in contrapposto. He is wearing a traditional looking suit and is holding a top hat. The relief sculpture contains several different things including Uncle Sam himself, working class people, houses and trees, and a boat. Its meaning is quite obvious to me; it’s simply a memorial for Uncle Sam and it shows this quite blatantly.
