i wish i could show people how foundational Homestuck is in Undertale, its story & its development. like at this point, ten years later, id say that the majority of Undertale fans are aware of a connection between the two works but chalk it up to “this thing Toby Fox used to be into” or “this thing that has a couple jokes/references in Undertale” and whilst those things are both true in a limited sense, they’re massive understatements about the shared dna between Homestuck & Undertale

The central joke of the Ulysses Ogre meme hinges on the Ogre holding themselves to unreasonable standards by expecting to fully grasp one of the most famously difficult works of the 20th Century after only a single reading, which just doesn't work if you substitute your favourite video game, because frankly, your favourite video game is not Ulysses – but to be fair, the overwhelming majority of books are not Ulysses either. There's probably a video game somewhere out there that's as textually challenging as Ulysses, and it's probably some random-ass RPG Maker game from 2006 with an author whose name is a dick joke and a present fandom of approximately eleven people.

if you know me, you know that the hill i'm willing to die on is that elitism around functional programming is absurd, and that the concepts of functional programming, like monads, are in fact fairly approachable.

so, i'm putting my money where my mouth is: i'm opening https://nicuveo.youcanbook.me for the next two weeks. book a meeting (for free, obviously), and in less than 30 minutes i'll convince you that you too can understand and recognise monads.

the presentation has no haskell, no maths, no category theory, and very little code. the only requirement: some programming knowledge, experience with at least one language. (ideally one of C++, Rust, C#, Java, Python, Go or JavaScript, which are the ones i mention in my slides).
