Hello nightmare! Do you like kitties? Would you, perhaps, like to see one of mine?

".. Kitties?" He pauses for a second. "Oh. Cats. Sure, if you can manage it."

He holds out the hand the moth is resting on. It flies a short dostance away before dissolving into something that sparkles like stardust.

gently hands you a moth. what kind will it be?

A moth shimmers into existence in Nightmare's cupped hands. It's large, gently fluttering wings taking up most of the space in his small palms. Mostly brown, with purple eyespots on its lower wings and feathery antennae.

"I'm not sure what to call this one yet, but it's one I'm fond of. This is a male, see," he shifts the apparition into one hand and uses a now-free finger to point out the antennae. "Females have less feathering."

He seems more relaxed now, more inclined to actually have a conversation, even. He studies the moth with fascination. "How did you do this, anyway? Usually you're only voices.. and not this kind to me."

"Big fan?" Nightmare blinks. "As said before, I'm alright. How are you, and most importantly, who are you?"

Nightmare jumps about a foot in the air at the sudden voices, reflexively closing his journal. His head shoots left, then right, before he leans around the trunk of the Tree his back rests on.

"...Hello?" He calls cautiously, throwing one last glance over his shoulder before settling back into his postion nestled among the Tree's roots. He chooses not to open the journal again for a while, staring at some spot on the ground in front of him

"I'm.. fine. How are you, strange disembodied voices?"

Entry 001 - May ##

Journal,

Well! I finally found you again. I considered starting this off with the ever-cliche dear diary, but that doesn't seem right when we don't know each other. I guess I'll take this page to introduce myself, then.

My name is Nightmare. I like stargazing, reading, and writing. I live under the stars and inside the trees, and consider them "family." The only other thing I have ever heard anyone refer to as "family" for me is my other half, Dream.

I'm also fond of learning new things, so you'll probably hear a lot about that, Journal. Maybe I'll use you to record my own notes about the things I see. Only time will tell.

About yourself - you were a gift from Dream for our creation day last year. He says he got you from some well-meaning monsters in town, but he has never been as interested in this sort of thing as I am. You were passed off to me, and then promptly lost between the branches of our Tree. It's amazing that you haven't been rendered unusable by the winter rain. Maybe I should name you..

[ ok we're rebooting this blog again. i know askblogs aren't popular anymore but I wasn't around at the height of them and nightlight means much to me as a character so we're retrying! third time's the charm ]

these nice big wandering spiders (Ancylometes bogotensis) were a common sight at the last few sites I stayed at in Costa Rica. initially, I thought I was seeing multiple species, but apparently there’s a number of color morphs (I think? these seem to all be adult) in both sexes. my favorite was the all-black male with hints of blue iridescence.
