Just finished watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), and I can’t help but wonder that maybe this was John and Lemar’s favorite movie when they were young. Like, maybe they watched it together, loved it, and dreamed of being their own version of Butch and Sundance. A better version.

If Butch and Sundance were robbers, they’d be soldiers.

If Butch and Sundance were stealing, they’d be protecting.

If Butch and Sundance died together, they’d survive together.

And when Lemar died, maybe John thought, at least Butch and Sundance died together, but he and Lemar couldn’t even do that.

And now imagine John with the Thunderbolts* on one of those movie nights, and someone picks this film... that movie night would probably hit him way too hard.

Thunderbolts Hug types

Bucky is actually a good hugger, he had several younger siblings and Steve growing up he has dolled out many the hug. It’s one of the things he was happiest to remember after his WS days. If you offer him a hug he feels like he’s human

Yelena only hugs select few, but they will tell you she’s a tight hugger. She holds on like they’ll disappear. She’s never the first to break away.

Ava isn’t much of a hugger. Chronic pain means pain in right holds and sometimes touch hurts, but she loves soft hugs, if you get a hug from her it feels like a ghost (see what I did there) but she doesn’t hug often so you really mean something to her if she does hug you.

Bob loves hugs, but he is an anxious hugger, never sure what the response will be to him touching you, but if he knows you he gives tight hugs. He’s always the first to break away.

John is a real hugger, that man’s love language is physical touch and words of affirmation. He loves to be touched, cuddled, rubbed, you name it, but hugs mean the world to him. His hugs are warm and comforting, tight enough but loose enough too. Lemar used to say to be hugged by John is to know what an angels wings wrapped around you feels like. For as much as he loves it he isn’t the one to offer first, he doesn’t think people want to touch him much less hug him.

Alexei is a BEAST with hugs. Tight long booming laughs and sometimes a kiss on the head. He NEVER lets go first. To be hugged by Alexei is to be protected, but also you may lose your breath

walks in Johns handwriting and fine motor skills are actually worse after tfatws due to an accumulation of damage to his dominant arm and sheer ptsd and the episode of all episodes walks out

the team finds it funny to make fun of him for it

Yelena calls it chicken scratch, Ava tells him a 3yr old can do better, Bucky says it’s the worst he’s seen and he’s seen a lot of handwriting in his day, Bob sends random penmanship memes in the GC and tags him, even Alexei gets on his case about how poor it is that he can not make sense of it.

but it goes from just his poor penmanship to his inability to hold things for a long time, his hands shaking when he’s gone too long or trained too hard, his right hand barely works, (he can’t really do much with it so he ties it to his shield during missions to keep it in place) he has a hard time using utensils, buttons things, tying his shoes, he uses voice to text because he can’t really text anymore, and other things that should not be so hard.

it all comes to a head when he can’t function in basic needs after a mission and a dissociative episode

and suddenly it’s not so funny anymore. It’s worrying.

Okay but concept based on john being kinda the new tony stark (shipped with everyone and their mother)

john "living PR crisis" walker constantly convincing the public that he is dating each of his teammates:

It starts when the New Avengerz have like a really bad mission. A publicly bad mission. And they are trying to do damage control at a press conference. One of the more conservative-leaning reporters (who all only address their questions to John and maybe sometimes Bucky) starts asking questions like, "what has it been like going from being led by very decorated men in the military to being an Avenger under the leadership of Ms. Belova?" (basically implying Yelena is a bad leader because she is a woman). And John is. Just so tired and his body hurts and he is tired of being some weird pedestal for these annoying misogynistic racist people. So he just loses it. Starts ranting about how Yelena is the best leader he has ever had and that he would "follow her to hell and back without question you fucking losers."

And the press doesn't understand that John at his core really is that loyal when he trusts someone (and he has trusted Yelena since they got out of the vault together). So OF COURSE the press assumes that they are sleeping together.

None of the thunderbolts take it seriously--it's just some stupid gossip that will eventually pass on. (But Yelena does give John a hug when no one is around to thank him for supporting her).

Except.

It keeps happening.

Ava has a bad day spiraling about her childhood growing up in labs and John invites her to come with him during his visitation with his son. They all spend the day under the sun running around playing games before getting ice cream. The next day, the headlines read, "Current Avengers, John Walker and Ava Starr: Relationship Timeline (co-parenting?)."

And then, Bucky gets thrown into a wall during a mission, and John just freaks out, eyes glassy, and starts frantically petting him, making sure that he was okay. Someone takes a photo of John holding Bucky's face in his hands, looking terrified.

After that, during one of those PR "friendship test videos" (that all of them hate but Val forces them to do) Alexei and John are paired together and one of the questions is what is the other person's favorite food. And John's answer is not only right, but like insanely specific, i.e., the borscht from this shop in this random street in St. Petersburg, outside of which Alexei had his first kiss. Alexei talks alot, okay-and John had unfortunately asked what everyone's favorite food was as the resident cook and was plagued with a good enough memory even without the serum to remember every. single. word. Alexei said. (When this inevitably blows up, Yelena immediately makes fun of John for being such a whore that he goes for two generations in the same family).

Eventually, the press also start asking questions about who this random dude living with the team in the Avengerz tower is and John just immediately panics and say "he's my....guy?" (he had a blond moment and couldn't think of anything fast enough).

Bonus: John's old tweets resurface and it's just. Him fighting people on main during the height of civil war on how Sam Wilson is a great Avenger (He can fucking fly??) and just generally being kind of lowkey obsessed with Falcon (like c'mon Sam did some crazy missions for the military as Falcon, there were probably tons of military people who were kind of obsessed with him). And the public are just like...oop Captain America totally rejected Walker's ass lmao

John says, "so what are we gonna do? just like... ride Bob into the sky?", and the next morning, Walker’s car is mYsTErIoUsLy crushed by a huge boulder (in the middle of New York!!), and his seat on the quinjet had vanished without a trace. Bob, however, amiably offers him help getting around, like, "dude, you don’t need uber, when i’m right here. i can fly and i’m not busy, so you could, you know… just ride me into the sk-".

I've always hated the headcannons that Tome didn't love Ogata or that she would have ignored Ogata if he didn't look like Hanazawa, and now I have proof to back up why I hate them. I think the problem wasn't that she was completely neglectful of Ogata, but instead that she was so focused on his future and his success that she neglected who he was in the present.

Yuusaku loved Ogata too, but when he projects this ideal future version of Ogata onto him, Ogata kills him.

All this calls into question his weird love of being demeaned and treated as less than as a means to prove his current self's worth, if that makes sense. Like he is this fuck up, low class, unloved child of a geisha and he wants to be loved as such almost?

Which is why his ending with Yuusaku hits as hard as it does because it affirms his innate self-worth, that he was inherently always worthy of love as he was. (That's why his guilt over killing Yuusaku was awakened by Ashirpa because she also loved him for who he was.)

Everyone’s talking about how Bob turned John’s shield into a taco, but nobody’s mentioning that he also melted John’s beloved gun. My man is left defenseless and unarmed.

John insists to Bob that everything’s fine, that he’s not angry or sad. But, every now and then, Bob catches those looks.
