Been working on this for the past six months . The first time we went to @inrecohindusthan HQ, we were blown away by the amount of history that place had. Every thing in that building had a story so rich in music, in culture and also the freedom movement. We went with our entire team for an excursion and all of us came back with a huge sense of pride and amazement. We all felt that we need to do something with the treasure we are sitting on and after several discussion, meetings and outings we decided to create a homegrown record label which is a blend of a scene that started in 1935 with what is currently happening at #yourlocalscene countrywide in hip hop, rock, pop, jazz, electronica and all the new sub genres that have evolved over time. We bring to your @mrbaburecords the friendly talent sniffing dog that is going to travel across cities, states, genres and boundaries to connect us over music that is fresh and path breaking. The rich history of Hindusthan Records with a fresh new energy of @smokeincevents is something I am personally very very excited about. When you have such an amazing surrounding, you gotta pose 😎 So apparently this town/village was abandoned by its residents overnight due to some threat by the king and now it’s a a ghost town and a major tourist attraction. This kind of stuff is still happening, people all across the world have to leave their homes and move to other countries due to war, threat and other political reasons. Makes you wonder have things really changed ? Have we progressed at all ? Oh yes we have a smartphone now to put this message out but we are still the same.. hateful, racist and a power hungry race that is fucking things up and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Six months of @topcatcculive over a 100 gigs + many new friends. It’s been quite a journey and we have only just begun. We can proudly say that we are the only venue in #Calcutta that does not choose its events based on how much sale it will bring. That doesn’t mean we are not concerned about that but that’s not how scenes and cultures are built. As programmers we have had many issues with venues not agreeing to do certain events because they do not meet their “niche” crowd’s profile, or the music is not popular or it will bring bad reputation to the club, many many excuses. I’m so glad at @offtothebeatccu we don’t choose artists based on how rich they are, which language they speak, how they look or whether they will bring a lot of people. If the art has meaning and it’s important for people to know about it, we try and do it. You don’t get into this business because you want to only make money, you do it because it needs to be done. So happy to have found a team that believes in the same and a partner like @meghdutroychowdhury who has much more crazy ideas than all of us and OGs @pravakaryonzon & @wangdireevu who have been pillars throughout. It’s what dreams are made of. There was a time when we had to beg venues for gigs, have had many meetings to convince them for one night dedicated to live music. Said no to many many venue because it wasn’t aligned with our vision. We started a dedicated Jazz night every Thursday and ran it for over four years and today I stand in front of the building which is the the new home for Jazz in the city. From searching for properties to finally seeing all the conversations, meetings, ideas and team come together, it has been nothing short of a dream. So humbled to be working with such a stellar bunch of people to bring music, food and fashion under one roof @karunaezara @mridula.pai @susmitbiswasart @chaptachana Munir, Manish, Abhijit, Rudradip and all the other people who have contributed in some way to make this happen. 😊 .
