“And that quote, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude,” the reason that that’s bullshit is because it’s just not true.” - Stella Young
[IDs: Screenshots from the late, great, Stella Young’s TED Talk: I’m Not Your Inspiration, Thank You Very Much. Stella is a wheelchair-user sitting up on the stage in front of a massive crowd. In these screenshots, she’s saying, “No amount of smiling at a flight of stairs has ever made it turn into a ramp. Never. (Laughter. Applause.) Smiling at a television screen isn’t going to make closed captions appear for people. No amount of standing in the middle of a bookshop and radiating a positive attitude is going to turn all those books into braille.]
I use this speech and the underlying theories a lot in my PhD, but Stella Young honestly had one of those voices that needs to be heard by everyone, so I figured I’d post my favorite part of the speech here. If anyone remembers that time I threw myself onto the floor For The Vine, you’ll know that I also hate the quote: “The only disability in life is a bad attitude”. Stella just conveyed the message with less pain.

Keep up the pressure. They will get away with whatever they want at this rate.

I know, right? So many people identify as Christian despite doing the exact opposite of what Christ would do.
Or maybe this is about those who identify as Patriots only when it's an excuse to be racist.
Or those who identify as Pro-Life but are okay with people dying from war, poverty, police brutality, unaffordable medical care, etc.
Or those who identify as supporters of small government but actively support abortion bans, the prison system, immigration crackdowns, the war on drugs, or a police force that's never held accountable.
Or those who identify as supporters of free speech but assault their children for "backtalk" or shit themselves when a football player kneels.

Wanna know one of the reasons I hate cops? They’re all inherently ableist. When police go through the training that’s required for them to complete in order to become cops, one of the things they are taught is how to tell if someone is lying or guilty. Here’s a list of what they look for;
1. If you don’t make eye contact when they talk to you.
2. If you are fidgeting.
3. If you speak too quickly or too slowly.
4. If you speak to quietly or loudly.
5. If you use too many details or not enough details when answering their questions.
6. If you don’t show enough emotion.
7. If you show too much emotion.
8. If you seem to be sweating or shaking.
9. If you clear your throat too much.
10. If you touch your face too much or hide any parts of it while speaking.
11. If you say “huh?” or “what?” a lot in response to the questions they ask.
12. If your response to their question is delayed/you take too much time thinking about your answer before giving it.
The list could go on and on but these are the main things they pay attention to.
Every single point in this list describes things that are incredibly fucking common for neurodivergent people to do. Each one of these things are most commonly exhibited by people with adhd, anxiety disorders, and autism, and they can become magnified by stress. And you know what’s stressful? Being interviewed or interrogated by police, especially when it’s for hours on end. And the more you do any of these things, the more convinced they are of your guilt.
Cops even continue to use polygraph tests to determine guilt even though it’s become common knowledge that these tests only detect anxiety, not lies. You can’t even use polygraph results as evidence in court because of how unreliable they are, but cops often use them anyways because they are convinced that anxiety and having nervous ticks or quirks equals guilt.
When you have to be taught ableist ideology in order to become a cop, that makes the whole institution and everyone in it ableist. Never trust cops and never ever speak to them without legal counsel present because they will use whatever they can against you, even things that are the result of your neurodivergencies.

throughout history it has been a man’s job to provi..
no, throughout history men have actively prevented the independence of women, they have actively prevented our mobility, rights to an education, and livable income. they’ve abused our reproductive capability and passed us around like properties, they’ve used religion to rationalize their hatred of us, and to put us in a place of subordination. so y’all can shut the fuck up about men being “providers” like it was some benevolent gesture, in an attempt to rationalize sexism.

This is the least fun version of the whole look under your seat gag from Oprah that I have ever seen. Do better world. Let's get back to peace (have we ever REALLY had it? ... if not then let's make it happen), happiness and love. We'll all be much more comfortable if we do. You can't change what happened now but you CAN make sure it's much much harder for it to happen again. This goes beyond just gun control. Let's invest in mental health and education too. Maybe then future potential shooters won't even have the urge to get a weapon let alone use it. Treat the root of the problem. Don't just bandaid the branches.

Started funny. Then @vetmedirl made it REAL. How did the world get this messed up? I hope I get to see it change for the better. Sooner rather than later for my son's sake.
UC or ER?

The man makes a good point.
Also, more people need to be the change they want to see (check OP's tags). Good on ya @ickyprincetothesun!
Men who love women in a queer way and women who love men in a queer way are valid as fuck.
If you define your attraction as queer, it’s queer. If you don’t define it as straight, then it’s not. If you consider it both, than it’s both, and if you consider it neither, than it’s neither. Fuck anyone who says otherwise.

We owe all the gay men and women who came before us an incalculable debt for living in the world they did and still making art, writing poetry, taking pictures of themselves loving the people they loved. Please love each other just as fiercely as they must have looked to the future and loved us.

“Time is tricky. You have whole months, even years, when nothing changes a speck, when you don’t go anywhere or do anything or think one new thought. And then you can get hit eight a day, or an hour, or a half a second when so much happens it’s almost like you got born all over again into some brand-new person you for damn sure never expected to meet.”
