Writing Journal 10/16
The question posed in the beginning of Chapter 2 ; “Does sharing content with others imply a type of digital-self or identity?” made me think about how social media is an example of digital rhetoric for people who use it a lot. The book also discusses prosumerism in the form of waves. I agree right now we are currently in the third wave as discussed in the book. We are constantly thinking of ways to better ourselves, our lives and the world around us and make things easier for us to function better. I don’t agree that this has had a negative effect on our economy, yes it has taken away some forms of labor but it has also provided more efficiency. I think efficiency has become a big causing factor for what the author states as the “do-it-yourself culture”. Times are very different in the 21st century and technology is a big part of that and a big reason for us having a different culture than that of generations before us.
Tumblr media
Page 43 discusses how companies collect consumers information just by them using these sites and the digital algorithmic surveillance. That made me think about how lately people have been curious about how it seems like the internet always knows what they are thinking or interested in. This has become a digital culture for companies because they use our online activities to encourage us to continue to keep using their sites and apps. As the author states this is the fastest and best way of interaction and I think their technique is clever. Prosumers are so caught up in using the social media because it has become a way of life that they are not effected by these things.
Tumblr media
This is a scene from the movie SPY and everyone thinks the government has been spying on us lol
In the video Danah Boyd discusses how media can influence mass shooting and hate online. The thing she said that stood out to me most was the term ‘agnatolgy’ which is the study of ignorance. People who display this ignorance through social media have been using the platforms negatively and use it as a way to harm people while other people use them in a positive way. This displays different uses for the same type of mode. This relates to our class and my writing process because it discusses how everyone doesn’t have the same take on assignments or how everyone won’t approach an assignment the same way so I always choose the way I know best.

Writing Journal 9/25
The second reading discusses Pinterest as a femine app and a way for women or female identifying people to express digital rhetoric as if the app has become in a way a community just for women. This was surprising to me that people thought this and that the demographics concluded this because I personally have never used pinterest but always assumed it was an app for everybody but “58%-97% of its users are female”.
Tumblr media
I added this photo of the gender sign for female because the second reading discusses Pinterest as an app for women.
The writer stated, “everyday composing practices on social media sites, from sharing and/or liking content to comments and comment-thread discussions, are significant rhetorical engagements..., it is often denigrated and discussed as a lesser form of digital literacy.” I agree with this as social media (all things including Pinterest) is a big part of my generation’s life. We often find ourselves interacting with our friends more on social media than in person or even finding out what is going on in the world more from social media than in a newspaper or watching the news. Therefore, it is actually a BIGGER form of digital literacy for those that it is prominent in their lives. This is also an example of being multimodal. Social media can be considered another mode.
Tumblr media
This Gif shows a few social medias that people use as a way to communicate. I also thought it was cool that it was kind of displaying them as a “social media outlet”.
Another part of the article talks about how naming Pinterest a “women’s app” is reinscribing oppression on women and that was the first thing that I thought of when I read the title of the app. To deem something that is open for anyone to download “For Women” can come off as sexist to women or offensive to the opposite gender that may also enjoy the app. I feel like this shows that gender equality can play a role in digital rhetoric or rhetoric period because people sometimes think that women don’t know what they’re talking about for certain things (sports, politics, etc.) and should stick to things like Pinterest. In reality, the article says pinterest is supposed to be used to break gender stereotypes. My argument can be used as a pro for cyberfeminism. This relates to the first reading for the week (Multimodal Composing) because it shows that women can have different modes of communication whether its together or individually. Those people had their own way of displaying their rhetoric but the people on PInterest all have that mode in common.
These concepts are related to my own discipline because I also know how to work well in groups that have things in common with me ( gender, race etc.) but I also have my own individual way of communicating and I know how to display that.

In the article on Medium.com, the blogger gives and explains seven helpful tips to consider when creating a web page due to the fact that there are many people in the world living with visual disabilities that use the internet. All of these tips help better the experience for the users who only use their keyboards and make their time on the web more appealing to the eye. I think the tip I related to the most or found most helpful was that all websites should have labels for their fields. This can be difficult to navigate around the page not only for someone with an accessibility disability but any user at all.
Tumblr media
This GIF is a webpage and gives a visual of it being used.
For some, technology is advancing so much they don’t know how to use it so directions of use should be clear as day. I have designed a web page before for a class assignment and I knew that all directions should be easily understood. I believe that you should make a page easily understandable and to navigate for users to get the most out of it - abled and disabled like Avinash Kaur mentions Device Independent Design, this is very important. The mention of the ‘autocomplete’ function is a good example of making a users experience the best as I have find this tool very helpful.
Tumblr media
Here I have entered a picture of how autocomplete works because I always like to see what the suggestions are and to see what others have been searching. Its always nice to think “hmm Im not the only one with this dumb question” 😂😭🥴
Avinash Kaur on the UX Collective website also discusses accessibility and agrees that color is very impressive to distinguish in a website for clarity. Medium.com gives an example of how color differentiation can make a big difference when identifying an error. While Kaur points of this is helpful for color blindedness, Medium.com stares that icons can also help - so shapes AND colors are a helpful tool. I think these two articles really express clarity and how important it is to convey your information to users in a way that they can understand as with your writing. You should always be concise and clear so that readers have a better understanding of your work.

Writing Journal 10/2
This article discussed somewhat of an experiment performed at Indiana University during a Symposium held at the school. The experiment consisted of knowing the stance the participants had on digital rhetoric and how much knowledge they had on the topic. Although everyone agreed that digital rhetoric had become more known and important part of the work field, when asked to give a definition of what digital rhetoric was, participants were stumped and had a hard time giving a straight answer. This reminded me very much of and mirrored our first Advanced Composition class. No one was 100% on the term and relied on our professor to give us a definition.
Tumblr media
I chose this gif because I thought it was funny but it also is a visual representation for how people feel when asked, “what is digital rhetoric?”. We look to others for the answer or are scared to ask anyone else because no one has a set definition, which the Symposium tried find.
The team was then able to gather six essays that give perspectives of scholars in digital rhetoric studies. I related to the third section the most because it talks about digital rhetoric with the use of video. I think this is most effective because I am a visual learner and I think videos are very effective. Videos contain visual and audio, two modes; making it more meaningful and if it is an interesting video it will stick with me longer.
Tumblr media
I chose this gif because the cat is intrigued in this video the same way I am when watching an interesting video that is also teaching me something lol.

Writing Journal 9/27
In chapter 9 of Writing in Knowledge Societies the author discussed experiments performed to determine the relationship between rhetoric and science. These experiments proved that rhetoric plays an important role in science because of its ways of creation of knowledge and the perceptions we take on certain scientific topics. This reading is connected to my own discipline when it comes to writing because when presented with a topic I also think it is important to create experiments for your claims like the multiple experiments the author performed. When first starting to read the chapter I didn’t think the author would find a connection between the two because science is all fact while rhetoric is usually based on opinion.
Tumblr media
This gif is a visual representation of science to represent the science experiment.
The author uses metonymy as an example for how rhetoric is used in science by explaining that in two different experiments people use metonymy to connect two words and actions. This is important because it shows that even though it is opinionated it becomes used often making it used by many and seem factual. This happens very often with things that we don’t even realize.
Tumblr media
This gif is a good representation for the fact that I learned new things from this Chapter.

Writing Journal 9/19🥳
Multiliteracies for Digital Age discusses how technology is integrated in to our everyday lives and should be an essential part of our progression of literacy. I agree with Selbar in his argument because technology has become more accessible in modern times and has been shown to improve our ability to perform certain tasks. Technology use has increased extremely since this book was written. I believe Selbar would agree that this change overtime is positive because these are changes he encouraged and wanted people to understand the values of technology. It is our job as the generation that is “most skilled” with technology to keep advancing the use of technology and using it to help improve our education and the way we learn. Selbar’s view is related to my personal discipline because being an ESU student without technology I would not be able to succeed in my classes (use of PowerPoint, D2L, Microsoft Office).
Tumblr media
Here is a photo of my use of PowerPoint during an intense classroom discussion.
I agree that technology should be implemented in everyday learning for the most part; The part I disagree with is the fact that it should be forced on older generations that prefer not to use technology. I think we should think of ways to help people who aren’t skilled in the use of technology in order for them to reap the benefits as well.
Tumblr media
I used this funny gif to show how sometimes older people have difficulty with technology. Lol!

Writing Journal 9/6
This article basically discusses how clinical settings can also be seen as writing spaces. The take o this article was interesting to me because I never considered a place such as the examination room as the writing space.
Tumblr media
(This gif shows an examination room as a joke and view as to why I would never consider it a writing space)
This made me change my views on how important writing is and how it is all around you in many different modes (as discussed in our previous writing journal in the University of Mississippi article). Key points that I took away from this article were;
1.Consistency is key - Depending on what type writing space you have you should always be consistent with your form of communication for clarity and to avoid contradictions
2.Know your audience - The article discussed how when talking to some patients in a clinical writing space some professionals use language that the patient might not understand. This applies to all writing because if I am writing an email, some words I would use for my college professors are not words I would use if I was writing to my 11 year old brother. I used to be a nursing major and we learned that efficiency in communication does in fact improve a patient’s experience.
Tumblr media
(Gif = a visual of an audience)
3.In a workplace (or classroom) know your role and how to execute it the best way (whether that is orally, taking notes, etc.) Knowing your role avoids cross communication and repeated communication.
These tips can be helpful to use when deciding the best way to deliver whatever type of writing it is that you are taking part in. These are things you should think about before you even decide what mode you’re going to deliver in and they could even help you decide on the best mode.

Writing Journal 9/4
Being that this is our first writing Journal this prompt made me wonder, “Do I have a writing process? What is my own personal discipline when it comes to writing?” because I never actually thought about it. When it’s time to write a paper I just get it done and never think about how I got it done. In this comic Liz and Jonathan discuss the uses of space in writing and how rhetoric connects to that. These two authors mentioned the fact that all writing is collaborative. I think this is very important to know for someone who finds themselves often writing papers because at first I tried to challenge the idea. I thought, “how is all writing collaborative when most writing assignments are completed alone.” Then I thought, well we do often go through peer reviews, teacher edts, etc. so that’s where the collaboration comes in. Liz and Jonathan make a note that collaboration in writing is a key factor.
Tumblr media
Another thing that these authors stated that stuck out to me was, “The first thing people think about [when writing a paper] is a blank page” (Alexander, Losh, 2013). This is not true for me. The very first thing I think about when assigned a paper is my thesis statement. A teacher in high school once told me that your thesis is the most important part of your paper because it explains what the paper will be about. I think thinking about a blank page will cause you to get discouraged because all you will think about is how much space you have to fill. The University of Mississippi Multimodal Guide talks about how their are five different modes of writing. This relates to my own discipline because I don’t think I switch my mode of writing enough so I hope this semester I will be able to do that.
