i honestly believe that the green is representative of who laurance truly is as a person, or at least who he used to be before his shadow knight transformation. the color green is seeking harmony, balance, understanding, being logical, calm, caring, and supportive.

these traits are both what we see in his actions and words and what we can infer based on various factors, his head guard status in meteli, how people view him, etc. time and time again, he acts as a sort of mediator, preferring peace and balance, such as when he turns down aphmau after the “the vows we take”, insisting that it wasn’t fair to garroth, and also, when he stopped aphmau from killing michi, even though she had a means to. there’s also a lot of evidence of laurance being being caring and supportive, not only to aphmau, garroth, and dante, but to those he barely knows/knew, like malachi and isabell.

before his shadow knight transformation, he had green eyes, a physical manifestation of those chatacter traits. it was shown in how losing that, as well as his humanity, he changed him as a person. still, he associates himself with the color green in an attempt to cling to the identity, who he was before. he wears green in his cape and in his scarf, both accessories of clothing that are easily disposable. it’s who he was, who he still wants to be, but he’s slowly losing that.

after he becomes a shadow knight, there’s red everywhere. while green is a much more mellow symbolic emotion color, red is associated with very strong emotions. it is representative of love, passion, energy, anger, and aggression.

at first it’s just the strengthening of those emotions, he feels love more intensely than before. he’s dealing with those mood swings and the unpredictability of it all, with the fact that he’s not who he was anymore.

not only is there red in his shadow knight armor, there’s red in his eyes, his veins physically show red through his skin, the rest of the color in his skin and hair is greyed. the red takes over who he truly is, gets rid of any emotion he had that isn’t innately shadow knight.

the red in his eyes shows the lense in which he views the world, an angrier, uglier place. he sees it like there’s no rhyme or reason to what happens, both in the actual world and internally within himself. that harmony and balance that he once held and protected is gone, and nothing makes sense.

i don’t know if i view him as more of a green or more of a red. it really depends on when in the series you’re talking about, as it changes throughout the entire thing.

i think that a lot of people associate laurance with the element fire simply because of the fact that he’s a shadow knight, however, being a shadow knight is not representative of who he truly is, it’s something he was transformed and changed into.

personally, i think he’s more connected with the element of earth. i think he’s a lot more peaceful than who it’s portrayed to be. the traits associated with green, being logical, calm, caring, and supportive, i think that’s who he truly is.

i think that’s he exaggerates his personality, masking with nuerodivergency, not only to appeal to others, but because it’s like a game to him.

when he realizes that this game he’s playing, the one he created for himself, is now competitive, and that now he’s losing, he clings to the color green. i like to think that he mourns the loss of his green eyes.
