Truly the best birthday present I could’ve hoped for, and never imagined: @themarsvolta re-forming, releasing an album, and having their Boston tour date land on my birthday. I am usually pretty loathe to take videos during concerts, preferring to be fully “in the moment,” but this was too special of an occasion to not document a bit of. Honestly an insane experience I never, ever thought I would get to see after they broke up nearly a decade ago. The energy in the room was tremendous. (Plus, peep that pre-show dinner…I mean, come on.) A belated thank you to everyone who reached out with well wishes on the start to my 27th year. Let’s hope this is the best one yet! #themarsvolta #boston (at MGM Music Hall at Fenway) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjlOovXrhSn_ZXRISwLw0olemhyxmAojxviHh40/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Brian has been family ever since I was just a kid. I first knew him from running the house band at Time Out Pub during the Blues Festival in Rockland – a tradition he carried up until the pandemic. After a couple years, Brian started staying with us during the festival, and we became fast friends; his car would pull into the driveway and we’d go out for hugs and to help him bring his gear in, and he’d throw his arms wide open for a big hug and jokingly yell “my son, my son!” Brian gave an absurd amount of time to me as a young musician. He had my band open for his when we were 11, 12 years old, on up through college. He would bring me on stage to sit in during the “All-Star” Jam with the house band, and with some of the Main Stage talent, long before I had any excuse to be up there. One year, he brought me up for the whole last set; I couldn’t have been more than 14, and there I was playing blues til 1:30 in the morning with those guys. Food & drink were always staples. One of his first years with us, he brought up a half dozen trays full of BBQ from Zachary’s. Once I was older, we’d start going out to eat together, get drinks, stay up late drinking bourbon after one of the shows, and always the Monday "morning after" breakfast at Home Kitchen. I was in Philly once in college for a Model UN; he snagged me at the dinner hour and we drove all around, him showing me history – and of course, stopping off for BBQ from Chef Keith. Brian was also an amazing photographer, as anyone friends with him knows. I looked forward to those Blues Fests with Brian all year long. He was a laugh and a half, great company, intriguing conversation, a generous musician, and a dear friend. These photos are from the last time I saw him, back in 2019. He picked me up in Boston on his way up and we drove there and back together. The final photo is from one of the first years he had me sit in. I can’t fucking believe you’re gone, brother; out of nowhere like this. I’m shocked and devastated, and I will miss you so damn much. I guess it’s not the blues without a little heartbreak eh? I’m sure you’d have a good joke (or ten) to crack right now, but I’m coming up empty. RIP Brian McLean. https://www.instagram.com/p/CZdFF1zLgjyQ4Xgm0kJLWDttjDgWTVZa7Nq-hA0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Lessons learned from cooking: ravioli is a royal pain in the ass, and so wasteful. Probably won’t go for this again, but it tasted great and was a growing experience. Brown butter “sauce” on top was good too, maybe a touch too much cinnamon - really don’t need much! #foodporn (at Allston) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWCfPy2LIwilcPsBGPYuNmXHQHpoPlAn-iUW040/?utm_medium=tumblr

I was too soaked from getting there to actually put the thing on, but it was all worth it: first time voting in Boston, done early and in-person. Folks, get out there and vote, no matter what it takes. There’s no such thing as an “off year”. #register #vote #Boston (at Boston, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVhJZJysa4qa6rXlLEwnbzSCMSIjw4782p9aAg0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Blown away once again by the raw talent, finely honed craft, beautiful compositions, and stunning showmanship of one of my oldest and deepest influences, Annie Clark @st_vincent. So glad to mark this as my first “post-Covid” (ha…) concert, and pleased to get to share the experience with my buddy @hayescummings. A stunning show, and with the inimitable @markguiliana to boot! Amazing lineup and talents overall, but what a treat to see him also, especially in this band. If you’re somewhere this show hasn’t hit yet, go get tickets NOW - a hard act to follow. Could not be more grateful for this evening. (at Boch Center Wang Theatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVCTqzIsPOHEQz7ng96OE-LIMjV6CyvDTA-0uM0/?utm_medium=tumblr
