sorry if this has been asked before but how do you make your gradients look so good?
Hi Anon! First of all thank you so much 🫶
I like to use gradient maps (which I've explained here) or gradient fills + gradient tool. I'll drop a little tutorial under the cut:
Tumblr media
GRADIENT FILL
I'll be using this gif which I've already sharpened and coloured:
Tumblr media
First of all let's make the background pop so I'm going to add a gradient fill (Layer -> New fill layer -> Gradient) with these settings (I'm using this colour #0099ff):
Tumblr media
Now it's the time to play with the blending settings! Depending on your scene some will look better than others but I usually switch between Soft Light, Overlay, Color or Hue. 90% of the time I use soft light but this scene looked much better using overlay:
Tumblr media
As you can see the background looks more blue and vibrant but it's not too much you know.
GRADIENT TOOL
Now it's time to use the gradient tool to give this gif a hazy look. I haven't seen many gifmakers talk about this tool but it's soooo useful and it takes gradients to a whole new level.
Before using this tool we'll need to add a new layer above the gradient fill, like this:
(HELP I just realised I typed “later” instead of “layer” 🤡 but let’s ignore that)
Tumblr media
You can choose the gradient tool by pressing 'G' and then clicking here:
Tumblr media
Make sure your gradient goes from any colour to a transparent background.
Tumblr media
Okay so next to this gradient settings we have five different styles and each one will create a different shape. Depending on the scene I'll use the first, second or fourth one. Here are how they look:
1. Linear gradient
Tumblr media
2. Radial gradient + Reverse (if you don't click this you'll end up with a blue circle above your gif)
Tumblr media
3. Reflected gradient + Reverse
Tumblr media
This time I'm going to use the radial gradient so to draw it start by clicking on the centre of the gif and drag the line (the farther you drag it the less intense the gradient looks):
Tumblr media
And this is the gradient:
Tumblr media
And here comes the fun part again, playing with the blending setting and the opacity! Before doing anything I duplicate my gradient layer because I always use more than one so this is how your layers should look like:
Tumblr media
Let's go to the first gradient tool layer and again try different blending modes: soft light, overlay, hue... Most of the time I'll use 'Soft layer' and I'll leave the opacity at 100%.
For the second layer choose 'Screen' and don't worry if your gif looks too bright because we're going to fix this by decreasing the opacity. Anything between 20-60% should look good but it depends if you want a more vibrant or more natural effect. I ended up using 40% and this is the result:
Tumblr media
And we're done!!! As you can see the result looks much different from our first gif and it only takes a couple of layers!
Honestly the best advice I can give you is to play with the opacity and blending mode of the different gradient layers because depending on the scene some will look better than others!

Happy pride!! Remember that Gazans -- and Palestinians in the West Bank -- are being slaughtered every single day by israel, but that Israel will use this month to try and pinkwash their reputation. Do not let them.
Reminder that Israel claims to be suuuuuuuper LGBT+ friendly, unlike those """barbaric palestinians""" --- but if youre a gay in israel, you still can't even get married to your partner, because all marriages in israel are regulated by religious courts, and none of them recognise same sex unions.
Reminder that Queering the Map has a bunch of entries from queer people in Gaza, one of which is a message to their deceased partner, where they say if they had known that israeli bombs would one day kill their partner, they would have spent the time they had together telling the whole world how much they loved them, and they're sorry they didn't.
Do not let Israel con you into thinking that they're some kind of queer oasis in the middle of the hostile desert of the middle east. Do not let Israel con you into thinking they give a shit about anything other than their own military might. They will feed hets and queers and adults and children alike into a woodchipper if it meant stealing so much as a single extra inch of Palestinian land.
Happy pride, keep your eyes on Rafah. Keep your hearts with the innocent civilians that Israel is slaughtering. Keep your voices on the topic of Palestine.

The amount of people who feel the need to claim there was no antisemitism in palestine pre nakba/still isnt any are just rewriting history but also not seeing these people as humans because they can’t grapple with condemning genocide if they don’t paint them as magic perfect Arabs that for some reason never had the same issues all of their neighboring countries have + the entire world has (there is not a place with no antisemitism. That doesn’t exist.) you shouldn’t need to paint an entire group of people as morally pure to think they shouldn’t be occupied and slaughtered. People do this same shit with native Americans and pre slavery Africa as well where they will literally claim they lived perfect lives and had no issues before colonialism. Which ironically is just another way you’re erasing their history

Caring for a baby on a daily basis is challenging enough even when you live in the comfort of your home with all basic necessities available and adequate healthcare at your disposal whenever you need it. Imagine being responsible for the safety and well-being of three newborns (and four other children) while a brutal relentless war is raging around you, displacing you from one hell to another that keeps getting worse each time. This is my family's struggle everyday since the beginning of this cruel onslaught on Gaza. The situation was already unbearably harsh when they were in the camp in Rafah. Now, that they have been displaced again to Khan Yunis,my family's suffering has only been intensified. Food, water and other basic needs are almost impossible to come by. In the sweltering heat, Our babies are surrounded by rubble, disease, garbage, insects and all sorts of dangers you can think of with no medical care whatsoever. The little baby formula they had has almost ran out and even if they were lucky to obtain more there is no water clean enough to prepare the bottles for three newborns. To say that these conditions are inhumane is an understatement but what's even more terrifying is that any promise of safety is nothing but a sham as the occupation keeps bombing supposedly "safe zones" since the beginning of this waking nightmare.
Tumblr media
My family have lost everything they held dear, their home which they built after years of hard work and patience, loved ones and neighbours, their jobs and livelihoods, their memories, their dreams and any semblance of a normal life. These three little angels and their siblings are the only glimmer of hope they have left amidst all the darkness and despair. Please help them so they don't lose them too.
Your support is now needed more than ever. It's what keeps us from completely giving up.Thanks to your love and generosity we have reached 27,774 € out of 70,000 € in a matter of days but we still have a long way to go.
Every contribution truly makes a difference and brings us closer to saving our babies lives.
Please donate if you can and share our story widely as you're able to.
We are forever grateful 🙏
