Not only did the passage of time surprise oneself with it's haste, but it certainly left one breathless by the end of spring as well. As assumed, days of rest were not an option when the nature was starting to wake from it's slumber, yet it had been a surprise just how much there was to do during this humid and hot summer now in progress. It felt like years since there last had been a chance to sit down and guide a delicately decorated brush across hand-pressed paper, bringing forth beautiful shapes and waiting for the ink to dry in the slight summer breeze.

Maybe this weekend would allow a humble noble soul some free time.

For whatever reason, tonight people seem to have focused on picking apart a dear, peaceful hobby of the stoic captain. When it was taken into account that those participating in the conversation were of the restless kind, this sort of criticism was not surprising, yet it was unpleasant to be exposed to none the less. Calming the mind and achieving perfect control of one's hand movement probably were both skills not easily achieved by individuals whose attention spans and full on dedication to a slowly flowing subject wavered and bent in front of the slightest discomfort like a straw in the gentle evening breeze. Then again, calligraphy was a skill that held a lot of meaning and pride when mastered so maybe it was best that no beginner was disrupting the process thanks to the blatant lack of interest on their part. This allowed silence to fill the still office space, aiding in the process of letting go of any stubborn, stressful thoughts and completely focusing on the paper, the ink and the smooth movements of a brush. Yes, this hobby was best when practiced alone and in private.

A moment of peace. A minute of tranquility. It had been a long while since such a state had been achieved, yet tonight it finally came. The midnight air carried a certain kind of moisture, making promises of an upcoming rainfall which would strip the trees of their first yellowed leaves. As it always did, the world was getting ready to slow down from summer festivities and settle into the darkening evenings and added layers of clothing. It all brought this sense of refreshment into the strong, lean body, which was secretly carrying an aching exhaustion within it’s bones. Guess the years would start to wear down even the strongest of soldiers eventually. And no, unfortunately Kuchiki Byakuya was not an exception to the rules of nature.
