Very, very late, but my reaction to Oops! I genuinely became an insane hyper mess watching this episode because of how long it'd been since I'd last seen Helluva Boss. So, if you want to see me SCREAM to the point where I fear I'll be judged by the internet, here it is!

Alastor’s canonical response to being in the same room as someone who can kill him is to start a pissing content to establish emotional superiority. That is so funny.

Me thinking about how the only good parts of Stolas’s life are a fantasy he struggled to maintain but now the illusion is broken and he has no idea how he’s going to live without it but he’s still going to try to make up for it despite not knowing how it’ll leave him 😃

Like literally the thing that brought him out of decades of feeling like his life wasn’t his own was a facade haha okay I’ll stop

Sure, we know there’s a chance for them because we know Blitz’ head, but Stolas absolutely does not, all he sees is the ways he’s been lying to himself.

The thing about Stolas

Is that he doesn't. Listen.

I'm rewatching Helluva Boss again, and due to the recent revelation that Stolitz was originally going to be something else entirely I put a lot of focus on making Stolas as a character make sense to me.

By the end of Loo Loo Land it hit me: he doesn't listen.

To anyone, really. He just projects his own optimistic fantasies onto everyone else. He doesn't listen to Octavia when she says she'd rather kill herself than go to Loo Loo Land with him, and up until the end of the episode genuinely believes she wanted to be there. He doesn't listen to Blitz when he clearly communicates he doesn't appreciate Stolas' advances, and continues on as if his protests are just part of the game they're playing. This is how it goes every time.

And it makes sense. He grew up extremely isolated, with a dad that didn't care about him and a butler who hardly ever talked back to him as his only social contacts. He had to make up these optimistic fantasies about what was happening in order to keep his sanity, and the only way to keep those fantasies intact was by straight up not listening to what people were actually saying. How else could he convince himself Paimon loved him, that he was important to the Goetia family, that he had a happy family?

So now as an adult, he pretends he and Stella are in a happy marriage, asking her about her day even though she clearly always responds with the same animosity towards him. He refers to Blitz as his childhood friend despite Blitz having only spent a single day with him, against payment no less. He pretends his role in the Goetia family is important. He pretends Blitz is just as into all this as he is. He pretends Via is happy and not being bogged down by the divorce.

And he doesn't know how to fucking listen to anyone.

And Ozzie's is where we see that pretense he's built around Blitz crumble. Because Blitz didn't ask him out on a genuine date, and he doesn't feel like he can back out of the arrangement like I'm sure Stolas told himself he did. And he keeps trying to build that pretense back up only to find the illusion is truly broken now. And he just doesn't know how to handle himself without it.
